I hear you about having a natural ability to see good composition. I've been following a lot of the "rules" long before I knew anything about them. I think it would be hard (but maybe not impossible ?) to learn these things if they did not come naturally. BTW, I have one little thing to add.... I'm sure some people might have a problem with it, but if your bird is looking (or especially flying) to the right, a viewer will not look as closely, or as long, at the image, as they would if it were looking, or flying to the left. {at least in countries where we read from the left to the right ;) } And changing this aspect is as easy as clicking the "Rotate image Horizontally" button.

Another great video, Jan! Sharing from your personal experiences to help make us all better photographers wrt capturing and composing bird images is really appreciated. As I've stated, in my photo opps, it's birds of prey at 150-250 meters and cropping is always part of the composition. Thanks again!!

Jan, I found the video the best in helping me with improving my composition, particularly the golden rules and crop options in Lightroom. Had no idea this existed. I always try to get my composition as best I can in camera but struggled when I had to crop. That was by far the best take away from this video. Thanks for sharing. Thanks Jan, I have progressed through photography sort of like this....basic use of a camera, sharp images, exposed images, better backgrounds, and finally better composed images. I did not do any landscape/Cityscapes at all but once I started to.....I had to compose....learning just some crude basics about composing helped me in wildlife shots. I really liked this video, thanks for this.

Birds are going to do what birds do! Instead of worrying about which way the birds facing I'm more concerned with getting the photo. If it happens to perched the right direction that great, but I'm not passing up an opportunity for photo hoping the subject will change position. I did enjoy the video, love the beautiful birds you have down under.

You don't have to pass up any opportunities, but knowing what to look out for will yield to much better photos and less missed opportunities :)

Great video Jan and covered all the tips that I myself do use and consider on very shoot and edit. It was really good to have the revision and confirmation. Yes I do find the reflection issue a challenge so I tend to shoot reflection images with competitions in mind (a common theme) then also do the in camera crop on the bird alone - I do both if I have time. cheers Thanks! regards Graham

Great video Jan. As a Nikon D850 user the total AF point coverage and excelent eye tracking of the R5 are really tempting. Additionally, for reflection shots, I find switching to vertical orientation helpful as I can include more space on the top and the reflection.

I hear you on reflections. I have typically tried to include them... but especially with those long legged birds, it can be problematic. I think I will try to leave most of those kinds of reflections out in the future. I don't think its as much of a problem with larger birds, sitting right on the water, such as ducks.

For a long time I have been trying to place the bird’s eye in the center of the frame (vertically, as you recommend at one point in the video). That seems to work pretty well. Now I sometimes try to put the bird’s eye also on one of the rule-of-thirds lines, especially the upper (horizontal) one if that makes sense. Thanks for the very interesting video.
@jan_wegener3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are definitely more than one way to make it work, especially with the birds being different sizes in the frame
@KevinFox583 жыл бұрын
I always find have the bird looking to the right and placing the subject on the right side since we read left to right. Sometimes you have to flip the image. Try it. It looks and flows much better
@jan_wegener3 жыл бұрын
I think you meant on the left? :) Mine usually do to, unless it's a YT cover

Hi Jan. A question. Sorry not about composition. I have trouble focusing while taking photos of birds into the light that are back lit.. I mostly use spot focus. Particularly in the bush or on a twig with a light background.. The R5 tends to hunt for focus and sometimes wont focus at all. Are there any settings that you use that are good for this scenario. Really like your videos thanks.
@jan_wegener3 жыл бұрын
Shooting straight into the light can be an issue, I usually then try to focus on an area that's not directly into the light and the same distance etc. To get it to be prefocused at least and then it can find it easier. But it can be a struggle at times
@kilohotel67503 жыл бұрын
I definitely need to remember to take a close up head shot. I’ve passed on many shots because birds have been on man made objects and overall wouldn’t be a good image.

I mean don't you feel shame, though your ancestors did it, don't you fell shame to not correct it but continue the pretension. Have some conscience bro . Not only west steals but also MISAPPROPRIATES so many things. Wait and watch the day you people down on your knees and say the truth to the world louder about yourselves and how you developed by scrubbing India not only of its physical wealth but everything, every ounce of knowledge you have is basically from India, you name any area, we were the pioneers.
