5 Inch Doyle Multi - Purpose Vise

Added another vise to the work shop. Doyle 5 inch Multi- Purpode Vise was on the sale for a few bucks off. What a nice vise for your bucks

Went in to buy this vise the other day but decided not to after taking a closer look. The handle is small for the size of this vise, maybe 3/8" diameter, and looks like the same handle as their 4.5" vise. The six-inch Doyle machinist's vise has a nice beefy handle, and this model should be the same. Even my old Allied vise I bought at HF in the mid-80's has a 5/8" handle. Using a vise with a bent handle is no fun. The other thing I didn't like was the slop in the spindle. The handle/spindle assy had at least a 1/4" of slop in the moveable jaw and felt like a bearing was missing. Maybe an assy error on this one particular vise but those two issues together were enough to make me pass on it.

The slop disappears as it’s tightened. All vises of similar designs behave like this.

Good looking vise. Do he follow up video in lets say 5 years and see how it is doing. I have a small collection of about a dozen old vises. The three vises I use the most are Craftsman vises with 3-1/2 inch jaws and were made in Japan. Of those the one I use most often I bought new in 1976 and it has new failed me. My latest one is a Bonney Lehigh with 1-1/2 inch jaws. Very high quality with a enclosed screw, not a exposed screw like cheap vises have.

@@ladwiss I also collect small old cast iron gas engines and have been collecting hand tools since 1966 and more recently old power tools like drill presses, table saws, scroll saws and band saws to name a few. I have my stuff in a three car garage and built overhead frame work to hang tools as I don't have a lot of floor space.
