Add spark to a synthetic material and it will weld to the skin. Blacksmiths wear cotton.

as a 10 year or so professional welder. get some liquid or powdered starch and use it when you wash your bibs. what i would do was fill a bucket with cold starch water. soak my bibs, then pull them out and let them drip / line dry. works better then you would think.

I'm a millwright myself, at a foundry. We make gray and ductile iron castings. And we're required to wear Arc flash uniforms and they still burn through from using a metabo or grinder. Smolder more than actually flame up. But when cutting or welding, cotton is the minimum requirement. So your denim is fine, in my opinion. Leather is obviously the best choice,but it's so heavy. As long as you're not wearing polyester, I'd say you're good. Lol. Polyester is bad news when it comes to heat or open flame... it WILL become YOU!

For hammer drilling, you might want to consider picking up a rotary hammer at some point, they really do work a LOT better for that purpose.

FWIW, ductile iron is also cast, but has a combination of elements added to change the nodular shape of the Iron and Carbon included using Manganese, Magnesium, Copper and other elements. The foundry my dad worked at for a long time would make both grey iron and ductile iron depending on the customer's application.

Correct me if you think I am wrong, but I think what he was trying to say is that the main difference between Ductile Iron and Cast Iron is that Ductile is less brittle, i.e. it does not break quite easily, whereas, Cast iron is comparatively more brittle. Ductile iron has an amazing bending capability over Cast iron.

Great project Evan. Some people never heard of them but a leg vise is an old blacksmith's vise that had a steel leg running down from the vise to the floor to give extra stability for when you need to hammer on what you are working on. It helps take the stress out of how the vise is mounted to the stand or bench..

I’ve found that a heavy leather welding apron will give spark protection when grinding. Gives chest to knee protection.

At the 14:40 mark I can relate to burning through your clothes when welding. I was grinding some metal and the sparks had burned through the long sleeve shirt I was wearing. I did not notice it until I was finished cutting the metal, but as with you, I did not suffer any burns. I just ruined a good work shirt!

I saved a welder's life onetime. He was wearing polyester inside his Nomex ( fireproof ) coveralls. He also had a bic lighter in his pocket. It took me to spray him with a fire extinguisher because I wasn't able to get the flames out by smothering it.

I had an 18volt Dewalt drill that started smoking while drilling through metal i just kept drilling the smoke stopped and the drill actually works better now but it was an old drill so if it burnt completely up it didn't matter, I have a vice stand made with a pipe tire rim and a flat piece of steel that is bolted to the floor.

my cousin went to an industrial trade show several years ago and they had a demo of concrete studs the epoxy one actually pulled a 4in dia. chunk of concrete out with the stud!!!!!

A vise on a stand is as handy as a pocket on a shirt. Chain saw sharpening for instance. Access from both sides. Your bibs aren’t ruined just a hole burned in. They will still work fine. Good video Evan. Thanks

I think it would be stronger overall if you put the bolts on the corners and the gussets on the sides.

I agree 100%. But the welds are undercut and didn't have a lot of penetration so don't know that it matters that much. With steel that thick they needed to be beveled and probably a couple passes to make them strong.

Nice video. You are way skilled. In the seventies I had a spring shop make a new leaf spring for an old Mack. He used water for drill liquid in lieu of oil. Cleaner,stays on, no smoke, good curls. Using it ever since.

If you use 3/4 anchors our will do any more and you risk it tearing up concrete and that would be expensive plus a 3/4 anchor bolt won’t be going anywhere at all, weld an eye to it and chain your Harley in place and it will be very hard to steal

Something I've noticed at least from the angle the camera is positioned is the head or the opening and closing part of the vice is sticking out past of the edge of the garage door, whether or not you've noticed it i'm sure doesn't metter because the whole thing can be swiveled, just something I noticed, I do enjoy your videos.

The number of anchors to use depends on the kind, size and embedment depth in the concrete. The anchor bolts should be spaced out so their shear cones in the concrete don't overlap. With the small baseplate you are using, 4 anchor bolts should work well. To use more than 4, your baseplate probably needs to be bigger.

The wiring on dewalt 18 v drills is a little weak.It’s the trigger wiring. W W Grainger sells all the repair parts if you want to repair it.

The height of your vice seems to be okay good job. Ideally the the top of the vice jaws should be in line with your elbow when standing next to it.

Thank you for this video. You have given me a great idea how to mount one. I have been looking at that same Doyle vise at HB and have come to similar conclusions. One suggestion I have would be to nip off the corners of the 3/8" top plate holding the vise. Personally, I would be jabbing myself on those corners. I have known many good welders and one thing they all have in common is their clothes have holes all over them from getting burned!

My Grandpa was a welder/shop foreman for Diamond Shamrock Corp. for 22 years. My Grandma starched his uniforms because the welding berries and grinder sparks would bounce off. It wasn't spray starch. Starch was a gallon bottle and she would mix a cup full with a few gallons of water in a #3 tub in their backyard, She would wash and rinse his uniforms, ring them out through a ringer (you made sure not to get your fingers caught,) dunk them in the starch tub, ring them out again them hang them on the clothes line. They would dry stiff as cardboard! She would sprinkle them with her soda pop bottle full of water and iron them. She said it would seal the holes in the weave of the canvas. Grandpa said it cut off the air circulation to his body but, it was like wearing a suit of armor. No burns!
