@@sandy3927 if the elected employees, Eric W. was fair to the workers of the oil industries, there wouldn't have been a protest. today we learn of the corrupted employees our parents elected , did nothing to demand a fair and reasonable profit , of our nation resources, and we still electing corrupted parties , who are giving no accountability of the nation resources, to our country native citizens citizens. furthermore, if our nation, hided paddle rollers ,were just humans to their fellow citizens, reason is , unjust wages for the work performed for the profit made by the corporation. unfortunately the corporation was at that time, was the PNM and Oil companies like Texaco, Esco, BP . who has changed names or been bought out . the latter companies made the majority of the profits, from TT's resources. with the sellout of the elected employees , our parents and current citizens keep re electing.

I agree with many of the other comments here. Mr. Butler's memory / life work does not belong with the criminals. To do so undermines not only his but the contributions of all of our subsequent trade union leaders who stood on the shoulders of this giant. Good job though. Very proud of your effort.

Trinidadians give to much praise and power to the criminals the bigger you are the more praising you give them, No wonder why it is the way it is now today, no big criminals go to jail only the small it should be for everyone. Exactly right. Uriah Butler is a national hero , a patriot , an activist. He is famous for his bravery; standing up for workers rights and taking on tne establishment. His act of courage and selfless dedication made him a hero amongst his people. Are notorious people loved and admired as Uriah Butler was ? Do they leave positive memories of their work and dedication to their people for centuries after they have died. The answer is 'No'. Notorious people leave negative and hateful memories that haunts us. Murderer , pimp, rapist paedophile are natorious for their dastardly deeds . Shocking that Uriah Butler's name is on your list . Had it been any other country where their national hero was on the list of natorious people; you would become natorious.

How can you have an activist as a notorious person! Activist are brave people, who stand up against oppression or detrimental behaviour against nature . They are our mouthpiece and conscience for change . Dr Eric Williams was also an activist . What he said about Uriah Butler, was probably true in some sense, as Dr Williams did not want any deflection of his goals for the newly independant T&T. Mr Butler was a socialist and Dr William who would have heard Mr Butler's cause, did not think if feasible or prudent (at the time) to take on board his fight, during his plans for rapid development of the newly independent island. Colonist Imprisoned people who spoke out against their oppressive practice . They locked up educated and intelligent black and Indian people, who saw them for what they were and was brave enough to speak out/ write about their oppression and subjugation. In the 18th and 19th Century, serving a prison sentence ended any future career or prospect; it was worst than death in those days , as there were no state help if you couldn't work. Therefore, we should be honouring Uriah Butler, not putting him in the same league as vile murderers, pimps and drug lords ! Please remove Uriah Butler from your list, he is our hero and a very brave man who put people instead of himself first.

I lived next door to Mano at Cap de Ville until he died. He never gave any trouble, he was calm as a lamb. When he was first released from jail he went to live on St. Marie estate in Cedros. That estate was owened by Boysie Singh's son, Choonksie. Rumor has it that Mano was one of Boysie Singh's henchmen. He came to live in the bunker at Cap de Ville sometime after he left the estate.

Yes! I know the bunker where he was living, in cap-de-ville. I use to live between the gas station and the youth camp, then the first street on the right after the youth camp. I have a child with his family in Morvant, P.O.S. Plus my mother know the two women who's eyes, Mano dug-out. And, I was going to the youth camp to buy milk for my mother when, over the radio that morning, I heard they hang Boysie Singh. Blessed.

I was a child when Butler died, Mano was released from prison, Dole was in my era as a young woman, the others am aware of because the adults would mention them ever so often.

I felt hearing Mano being release when I was a child was more fearful than hearing about the murders Dole and his gang conducted in an area close to where i grew up. Mano look scary because of that acid burn, and he seemed the type of person who could easily overpower the typical person.

The Mano Benjamin trial was closely followwe by many persons.What stands out in mind were the words of the judge to the accused: " You are a monster in human form." He was sentenced to twenty years and thirty strokes- a fate well deserved.

On the heroes side of the ledger it was a Vincentian, Inspector Charles John, my Uncle who cracked the case that snagged the pirate Boysie Singh when no Trinidadian Detective could outsmart this famous crook . As a result, even today, my cousins and I are treated like royalty in T&T, not as "small islanders" . Lastly, T. Urriah Buzz Butler is a famous Freedom Fighter alongside illustrious Caribbean colleagues like Grenada's Albert Marrishow, Grantley Adams of Barbados; Ebenezer Theodore Joshua and George A. To McIntosh of St. Vincent; Alexander Bustamante, Jamaica's most famous Union Leader among others. As a matter of fact, jail time in the earlier, anti colonial days was a mark of honour for any and all ranking Union Leader or Anti-Colonial Politician in the early 1900s. Please remove the colonial cobwebs and modernize your perspective of T&T and Caribbean History. T. Urriah Buzz Butler was not a top tier Criminal. This T& T, national hero should be counted among the famous fighters for trade union benefits and rights to fair wages for the workers in colonial times. Buzz Butler did his jail time as a freedom fighter, unlike our debunked historian, Ebenezer Theodore Duncan, who escaped jail time by proving his loyalty to the British Colonial Masters in his "History Of St. Vincent" by name calling. The locals, native Vincentian citizens were called "the enemy". But the term "our men" was used to refer to the colonizers and Mr. Ebenezer Duncan as proof of his loyalty in the face of the Anti-Colonial riots of the 1930s in Kingstown, St. Vincent. My hope is that the next generation of historians at St. Augustine will elevate T. Urriah Buzz Butler to the rank of national hero. He has no place among bsdjohns and pirates .

Fighting colonial exploitation of workers is not criminal activity. The 1930s saw riots and strikes throughout the region. The cause? Poverty. Oppression. Exploitation. Most Trinidadians ate meat only once a week on Sunday. Prices were much higher in the colonies than in England. The poorest people paid the highest taxes. It goes on and on. Yes, Butler violated the law to improve working conditions and pay for generations of oil workers. To include him in a list of real criminals is disrespectful.
