Great video as usual. Just a crazy thought about the Michael Jackson stairs 😅😂: if we found a way to control the power of each strip (wirelessly, either by controling a switch or the strip itself somehow), then the sequence of lighting them up could be achieved by using webcore (if top motion sensor triggers, then turn light 1 on, wait 200ms, turn light 2 on, wait 200ms, .... Cheers

Pau Hibbert videos are a must-watch for any UK-based smart home enthusiast/wannabe. The guy is immensely likeable, self-deprecating in the way only the Brits can master, and certainly knows his stuff. Caveat: UK-based smart home enthusiasts should never compare themselves to their US cousins. Because, truth be told, we here in the UK are working with some serious handicaps. Like the fact that our walls (even the interior, non-load-bearing ones) are often made out of solid brick, concrete, or stone. Adding a light switch or moving an electrical outlet frequently requires a jackhammer, a building permit, and a second mortgage. In the US? A $5 drywall saw, a fish tape, and a tub of joint compound is about the extent of your investment. Then there's basements. Which pretty much every US house (excepting those below sea-level, looking at you, New Orleans) have. Brits: Imagine having the entire ground floor of your house available to you as a playground/workshop. Just underground (with no windows to let the pesky neighbours see what you're up to). The Americans have more room to work with, their electricity won't necessarily kill you, and their home-improvement retailers are Cathedrals of Opportunity for the ambitious DIYer. Jus' sayin'... Colin Furze spent the best part of £100,000 of subscribers and sponsors money building an underground bunker. An amenity available at no charge to even the humblest suburban tract home buyer in the US. Here in the UK the best we've got going for us is sheds. If you've got mains electricity in your shed you're a Macher. If you've got running water and a CAT5 internet connection you're golden. So: No UK-based smart-home guy should ever feel bad when comparing himself to a US-based one. Those guys are playing on a field where the rules aren't stacked against them the way they are in the UK.

Like you said, you can do the first automation at 1:11 with an Arduino but you don't actually have to write any code. You can instead use WLED and integrate that with Home Assistant or Hubitate just like you would with any Christmas lights. You have to create segments in WLED but the automation part isn't that hard. I'm not the person in that video but I've done the same thing at my house and the hardest part was wiring the LEDs and hiding the wires.

That robovac garage thingy can actualy be simplified. I built something similar with one compromise. No automatic closing. Just put Roomba under the counter and add the door. The door uses spring loaded hinge, so when Roomba naturally back out of the docking station, the door is "gently" nudged and the spring loaded hinges open the flap. Then when I walk by, I just push the door back with my foot. Done, no programming. No "smart" home solution needed. Similar results.

UK based, UK humor, and sararcasm isn't dead! Seriously though Paul. Wled - esp8266 and addressable leds all controlled by "she who should not be named". Easy peasy lemon squeezey. 🤣🤣 I have leds behind my TV, kitchen counters, cupboards, and all the bedrooms using wled on esp8266s, Alexa routines a bit of patience. Kids and wife love the fact that at bedtime their lights turn red then go off after 20mins. Morning routine gradually turns lights up from red to blue over 5mins. LOVE THE VIDEOS! 👍👍

Right, was about to post this. NYC subway times are RANDOM AF. The system was built long ago and has many problems and is under constant repair and upgrade so thats why having something that tells you when a subway is arriving is necessary because the times vary. LIRR which is our normal train system connecting Long Island with NYC is a bit more consistent a far as time goes, dont really need an API for that.

On multiple locations I've written an app that monitors train and bus times to tell me how much time I have before leaving home/office - I just didn't make a lighted sign (but if I did it today, I totally would). You’re very welcome for the patreon support. just have to say - you obviously don’t use trains and live in the north - timetables are literally a suggested departure time and often cancelled with no announcements - one every half hour at commute time meaning double passengers on the next train - which is often cancelled. we’re not allowed access to API’s for real time updates either - thats all guarded info here in the UK for big fee paying apps that are ticketing providers. or i’d have written something like this for busses and trains. there are real time updates in the south but us northerners don’t exist.

I emailed you about the Broadlink button last week. Really good for triggering routines. Couple of things to note, each time you add a new button device you have to disable the Broadlink skill and re-enable or it just doesn’t work. The other thing is that the Alexa app sees the button as a motion sensor so to create routines you have to say if detects motion instead of if button pressed.

Agree - the stairs are just a bit too garish and ‘disco’ really. Just because you ‘can’, doesn’t mean you ‘should’. The trouble with the robovac thing is that the newer self emptying models can’t be docked under a plinth like that without hacking a great hole in the kitchen unit for the dock/bin self emptying part. Agree it looks cool though. There’s several examples of some pretty innovative ‘garages’ for robot lawnmowers that are pretty cool.

Idea Needed. I don't want a camera doorbell, but I would like to know when a package is dropped off on my front porch. Is there a good outdoor sensor I could use that won't trigger every time the wind blows. It doesn't have to be wifi. Also, we have considered ideas for the mailbox when the door is opened and mail is placed in. Best I could come up with is a "window" alarm that when the 2 pieces are separated the reciever alarm goes off. Thoughts? I am obviously not the tech person, but the husband is. I would pass along your thoughts to him. Thanks in advance.

There's an easier way to do the light up stairs without the need for an arduino. Simple. Just have each light individually addressable in Home Assistant with the node-red add on. Send the command to light all lights when a PIR sensor is activated, except delay the first light by 0ms, next light by 500ms, next by 1000ms, next by 1500ms, and so on. Despite all lights getting signal to turn on at the same time, the delay will make it appear as though they're lighting up in a delayed sequence. Set a separate node red flow on another PIR sensor at the other end of the stairs to go the other way with the individual addressable lights and reverse the delays.

I made alarm for my cats that they want to get into the house, they come onto my balcony and either sit on window while waiting till i let them in, or they sit in front of balcony door. I used 2 aqara motion sensors (they identify cat only for short distance like 1m). I added sensor for door opening for time when i let my balcony opened, i don't need to know if there is cat cause it can go freely in or out. I also added 2m timeout after door closes when i let cats out and they still stick awhile on balcony so my alarm would not go off, also those aquara sensors seem to have 1m timeout too. This is all done in HOOOOOME ASSISTANT :D, alarm is done by sending message on my phone.

the train one would be achievable with timers! ... if bus/trains weren't finicky sometimes. those api's often have a gps on the trains so you can see if they're really on time, if they're late, or if they're assholes and going to say they're on time but really be there five minutes early and leave you in the dust.

“Don’t trains run on the same schedule every day anyway?” lolololololol even the ones that are supposed to (in the UK) can be behind. But the Subway in NYC changes enough or has enough delays that this sign makes a lot of sense. Some trains/metros have an “every X minutes” schedule anyway. Pulling from the real subway location data is awesome. But you knew that.
