I use the same technique to find out the % of ratios (proportions) with the bow tie hack (minus the denominator not needed in this example). Ex: 10 to 40 = x percent or x to 100. I put the first part over the second part of the proposition and then multiply 10 by 100 and divide the total by 40 = 25%. I always remembered this easy trick to find out percentages. Which is a good argument in favor of the utility of mathematics. because we often have to deal with %.

Maths always amazes me! One minute is says to balance or use the same units or round to the same number as the original value, or whatever. I find that really weird looking and imbalanced that you would say x is to 5/2, when the first part says 5 is to 40. I would think the Maths world [and it would certainly look more connected to the first part] would want 2.5 or 2 1/2 is to 20?! That's the way I would give my answer.

An analogy::: When mixing paint color a precise amount of concentrated color is dropped into the open neutral, base-colored can. For this problem lets take just one concentrated color (5oz) into a 40oz base colored paint. Next time, we want to make up more paint (20oz). How much color is needed? in summary: 5/40 =? x/20

Why not simplifying further? 5/2 = 2.5 At the end x = 2.5 And your proposition becomes 5 is to 40 as 2.5 is to 20.

2.5 ? 5/40 = x/20 40x = 100 x = 10/4

40x=100 X=100/40 X=5/2
