In this video you’re going to learn the 5 key numbers to creating a successful startup.
In fact, from growing my startup (Vivino) to over 34 million users, I can usually tell if a startup is going to blow up or completely fail based on only 5 numbers.
What are those 5 key numbers? Obviously, I have a lot more details in the video. But here’s a sneak preview:
The first key is user or customer acquisition. In other words: how quickly are you bringing NEW people on board? Obviously, the more users you can get every month, the faster you’ll grow (usually).
Then I’ll talk all about NPS (Net Promoter Score), which is an underrated way to figure out if your product (and customers support) is on the right track.
Finally, you’ll learn the ins and outs of managing and measuring your company revenue. This is NOT as straightforward as most people think. So make sure to watch this section closely (and take notes).
And by ignoring the noise and focusing on these 5 numbers, you’ll greatly boost the odds that your startup succeeds.

This guy is amazing, always ‘to the point’. I can always feel the difference between theoretical tips (by professors) and practical ones by founders. Founder tips are always simple and easy to implement. I gonna watch all your videos bro 🤘

Thank you very much for being a loyal subscriber, no loyalty program just yet, but who knows what happens if you stick around :) They say things become a little bit easier as you hit 1,000 subscribers, I guess we'll see about that! Yes want to do more about hiring, don't have a really good script yet, but we will get there.

Great video, Heini! I love your focus on the numbers vs. touchy feely stuff (like culture). Culture matters. But a business ultimately succeeds or fails based on its numbers. And this video will help other startups know which numbers to focus on.

Another amazing video! Thanks for sharing this, Heini! I have a question, when building Vivino, have you been closely monitoring retention by install tenure day? That’s the most common one for games for example, but I imagine Vivino is not the kind of app that people use on a daily basis (unless they are really into wine) so the retention curve might not make as much sense...

Thanks, yes good question. We do cohorts too, but in the early days we focused a lot on active users, specifically Monthly Active Users(MAU). We tried to look at both WAU and DAU, but you're right that really wasn't how people used Vivino. I think MAU was and is the right one for us.

@@RawStartup Thanks so much for your reply, Heini! My problem with MAU however is that it's hugely dependant on the install volume, and if you spent a bit more money on acquiring users one month compared to the other or, say, you had a user inflow from PR or featuring then it might create a false sense of growth whereas the effects are just temporary. I guess it's a bit of both at the end, cohorts analysis + a number of actives. If I may ask what is Vivino's retention D90+? Cause it is a struggle for many apps nowadays to nail down a long-term retention and Vivino does come across as more of an exception that people would never really delete. I have it installed for 4+ years with no intention of deleting it even though I might not use it every month/week. I'm sure I'm not alone.

How do you measure NPS? Must be more than just surveys. I'm thinking this is the most difficult data to track correctly, or to implement into customers usage/journey.

Be very careful with how you do that. You can't cherry pick the users that you do this with, has to be a representative group. I like to just send out an e-mail and use one of the services to do so.
