Health anxiety or hypochondriasis can be an extremely debilitating and distressing psychological condition, in which a person worries excessively about their health and the possibility that they might have a serious health condition. Health anxiety and hypochondriasis is caused and maintained by a number of factors, including: unhelpful, catastrophic thinking related to a person’s health (catastrophically misinterpreting bodily sensations, catastrophically misinterpreting health related information); increased physical sensations of anxiety resulting from the catastrophic thinking patterns; hyper focusing on bodily symptoms or sensations; checking and reassurance seeking behaviours; and avoidance and safety behaviours. These five factors lead a person into a series of negative feedback cycles, maintaining their health anxiety and making them feel progressively more anxious.

Super helpful! 2 years ago I ate too much before bed, woke up choking on acid which terrified me. After that for months was afraid of chocking or heartburn. Slightest sensations sent me into panic. Past that now but now other body sensations are abnormally worrisome. Simple cold and I catastrophize about cough leading to pneumonia and then worse..just terrible none of this used to bother me prior to 2 Years ago. Never even crossed my mind. Now every chest sensation in my head it’s pneumonia or heart issues until proven otherwise..

Jon Kabat Zinn says “For as long as you’re breathing, more is right with you than is wrong.” That’s my “go to” when I have health anxiety.

Dr Rami, you just described me. I am so fearful of my symptoms that they become real. I noticed the very thing I fear actually happened. I avoid watching medical dramas because I certainly will develop one or two of the cases treated in the drama. I only came to the realization that I'm actually afflicted with health anxiety. I'll certainly try all that I learned and not try to control every symptoms I feel. Thanks for this beautiful information doc.

It led me to very bad symptoms - pain in my muscles and lots of other parts of my body. I had a bad cough and chest pain for many months before it went away and this drove me to anxiety after getting a biopsy. I am trying to get my body to calm down so that the pain can subside... tough.

Hi Peter - I am working on a number of videos on ways of managing health anxiety symptoms that I will be adding to the Health Anxiety playlist (kzbin.info/aero/PLG_XiSJeP3s2xNmqsyrCkIBmGXJ6voFi-) over time. I will get around to uploading them, but can't tell you exactly when they will be uploaded.

@@DrRamiNader I am really glad to hear that - you gave such a great clear description of the problem. I am in the process of reading Hubiner's book on chronic pain and it would be great to get more insight from your side of things. Thanks for all you do.
