Choosing a lavalier mic is a daunting task--there are so many options even at various prices. So here we talk about 5 different lavalier mics from a budget $25 USD mic up to a mic that costs $200 USD and requires an even pricier audio recorder or interface.
The gear used in this episode:
Audio Technica ATR-3350
geni.us/56WTjwt
Giant Squid Omni-directional Mono Lavalier
geni.us/CkpBprJ
RODE smartLav (for recording to smart phones) RODE recently updated this with the RODE smartLav+. The original version is quite noisy so I would instead recommend the new smartLav+ version. Don't try to save $20 with the old version. You will be sorry.
geni.us/yuYlE2B
HMNSound Lavalier - Unfortunately, they are not able to ship any longer.
Audio Technica AT899
geni.us/ji55w4
Zoom H1 Handy Recorder
geni.us/jW7r5p9
Tascam DR-05 Recorder
geni.us/7daZ
Zoom H4n
geni.us/UVKTwU
Tascam DR-100 mkII (for XLR mics--for just a tiny bit more, I would now recommend the Tascam DR-60D, see below)

I am confused here. TRS 3.5mm is the smartphone plug. So why won't it work with a smartphone?

You can listen to audio with the TRS ( or two black ring plug), but to record into the iPhone or other Apple device you need the TRRS or 3 black ring plug, hence the need for an adapter or a lav already designed for Apple devices.

Hi Pedro, the industry standard wireless lavalier mic system for film and video is the Sennheiser G3 wireless system. It is pricey but works very well. You'll need to get the right frequency for your locality and the people at B&H photo can help you figure out which is best for your location: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/618739-REG/Sennheiser_EW_112P_G3_A_EW112_p_G3_Camera_Mount.html/BI/19904/KBID/12941/kw/SEEW112PG3A/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xSEEW112PG3A I haven't tested the less expensive options but most of the reviews I've seen have cited audio quality issues so I've stayed away from them. Best wishes on recording your magic!

So I have the "Tascam DR-40 4-Track Handheld Digital Audio Recorder" and the Audio Technica At899. I was wondering how do I make the tascam input audio from the lav once I connect the two? I plugged the lav into it and tried recording and it was only taking in audio from the Tascam's mics

Erich Funke The Audio Technica does come with a TS connector. The HMNSound does not--at least the model I received though they have a variety of options. If you are looking to connect the mic directly to your camera, the Audio Technica comes with a 5 meter cable which may be a better choice.

Hi Damian, I haven't tested any inexpensive lavalier microphones this year but here are some thoughts: If recording with a phone, here are three decent options: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXq6e62Kp6tpp68 If you're willing to spend a fair bit more for pro-grade lavalier mics, I would look at the Sanken COS-11D, the DPA d:screet, or the Countryman B6. Bruce, I record at 24 bit, 48KHz. Increased sampling rates beyond 48 won't really do much for the sound, but 24 bit resolution will give you more room for processing in post.

Hi Sir, I saw your review Smartlav vs TRS mic using SC6. I order the SC4 adapters cause as you understand is the original Rode Lavalier TRS. I did not understand really what you mean by: I record in the RODERec app by turning iOS processing off, 48kHz, 24 bit, and all other effects and processing turned off. Me again: I search in settings rode but do not find such level. I see as well mono and 44100 Hz. I think I have said that after managing the film included the film shoot using 2 x Rode Lavalier that I seem to understand that the audio convert to MPEG-4, 128 kbits/sec, 16 bit Stereo, 48kHz. The 2 rode Lavalier were connected into 1) spitter adapter jacks male TRRS and two female TRRS jacks ordered by RadTech, 2) KVconnection adapter. This KV connection does the same thing as the SC6. When using the Rode Lavalier with FilMic or MoviePro what I guesses works much better than FilMic than is it not possible to manage the Rode app. So I think that MoviePro stops the processes as you mentioned. On the other hand I do not see two audio lines in pinnacle studio what means in fact that it is no stereo. Strange issue! So I will ask you, how do I stop the processes? Second ... I will help you out: I can mis two weeks the rode Lavaliers , if you will make a video with the two original rode Lavaliers than I will send them to you if you will paid the shipping. On this way you most not order the expensive Rode Lavalier and you can comparing the two different Rode microphones, the SmartLAF and the original Rode Lavalier. Luc

Hello Curtis Judd :) Really liking your videos, but I have a question that I'd love for you to help me with if that's OK :) I've done some looking around as I'm interested in recording audio to my phone. Is it true that given the fact that it is a phone there is always the need for some kind of power being provided between the audio jack and the mic? Is this why a condenser is needed? Aren't there any options for lavaliers without batteries or would I need to get a condenser adapter for that too to compensate? Thanks in advance! :)

hi curtis, in many cases you connect mic to zoom h1. did you try to connect those of lav mics that have 3,5 jack input into your focusrite scarlett interface? did it work? what kind of adapter did you use? i have difficulties connecting my 3,5 jack microphone to my scarlett 2i2 - i get no sound at all.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, but unfortunately that won't work unless the microphone provides its own power. Most 3.5mm plug mics require 3-5V plugin power. XLR based preamplifiers generally only provide 48V phantom power so that won't work. In fact, applying phantom power to a microphone which works with plugin power can damage the microphone.

Hi Curtis, Great Video, Thank you! I am using a Canon Xa10 to record a two person interview and also a speaker. What do you recommend would be the best for shooting both or do I need to buy 2 different types of mics to pick up sound for each?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Grant, usually lavaliers are used just for dialogue, but of course they'll pick up anything that produces sound near them. The speaker will sound farther away than the dialogue of the person wearing it of course. On the XA10 can you record with the include mic (for the speaker) plus two external mics at the same time? That would probably be ideal.

Hi Curtis, wanted to ask you about the Giant Squid. I'm going into a DSLR and have access to a Behringer 802 mixer. I was thinking of 2 Giant Squid mics that feed into the mixer and then into the camera so I don't have to synch up the audio. I'd probably need extensions for the mics to keep the mixer near the camera. Other than the obvious potential problem of a poor connection do you know of any other problems?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 10 жыл бұрын
This is one limitation of the Giant Squid that I didn't cover in the video very thoroughly--the Giant Squid has a 3.5mm TRS plug and requires plug-in power (1.5 to 10 volts). So this poses two issues for use with a mixer. Most mixers require XLR mics (and there isn't a great way to convert the 3.5mm to XLR) and they provide phantom power (+48 volts) versus plugin power (1.5 - 10 volts). So I'm afraid this may not be the best mic for a mixer with XLR inputs. I think you'll probably want to look at either mics with XLR connectors or look at recorders. I don't know of any, off the top of my head, that have two 3.5mm inputs--almost all of them have only one. Options there include two recorders (Zoom H1 or Tascam DR-05) or Giant Squid makes a stereo lav with two heads that you can plug into the H1 to get two tracks. Good luck!

Hi Curtis - Thank you - your review (5 Lavalier Mics: Which Mic is Best For You?) has been super helpful. And super detailed, which is what was very helpful. (I don’t necessarily want to have to get into a wireless or even field recorder option, and so am looking to hook a wired lav up to my talent, and directly into my camera. I have an Olympus OMD EM-1 camera, and I tried the RODE lavalier (with the TRS connector) and this connector simply does not work). There are a few small (but important to me) details I’d like to ask you about: Does the Audio Technica ATR-3350 come with a TS adaptor? And I know you said the cable is short, so: does the HMNSound Lavalier come with a TS adaptor? And with a longer cable option? Would you mind taking a few minutes to give me your response? Erich

Hi Curtis I can't find a distributor/seller for the GIANT SQUID OMNI MONO MIC here in the UK. Is it not available over here ? I was very impressed with your video, it helped my a lot and I've decided on this mic for my video work. Also the Zoom H1 field recorder.

Hi Curtis, may I ask if you have you come across any simple microphone (clip-on or otherwise) that will focus on voice at close range and eliminate any background noises (ie the traffic out the window). I want to start vlogging but the streets are jumpin' out there! Thank you.

For the Giant Squid and HMN Microlav would having a 3.5 female to male end extender cable decrease the audio quality if plugging directly into a DSLR?

+Lucio Botteri My favorite is the Countryman B6. Here's a review I did earlier this year: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpmUoomld86YjKs It comes down to personal preference to some extent when you get into this league, but here are some other lavaliers that many pros like: Sanken COS-11D - One of the most popular options among location sound mixers www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/606469-REG/Sanken_COS_11D_PT_BK_EW_COS_11XPT_Omnidirectional_Lavalier_Microphone.html/BI/19904/KBID/12941/kw/SAC11WNSETRB/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xSAC11WNSETRB TRAM TR50 - Also very popular among location sound guys. A little on the bright side for my tastes but works well hidden under clothing. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/258079-REG/Tram_TR50BSET_TR50_Omnidirectional_Lavalier.html/BI/19904/KBID/12941/kw/TRTR50BSETP/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xTRTR50BSETP

A boom mic is a good option if you have someone to operate the boom. You can also do two lav mics and mix them together in Premiere or whichever editor you're using. In this video I show how to sync an audio track to a video clip and the same applies if you're syncing two audio tracks to a single video track: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGnakqFtqb-olas

Listening with headphones, I can definitely hear that the RODE smartLav has more background noise than the others (relative to the signal). Does that noise come from the preamp on the iphone?

Question - If I record video on a Red Epic I would need some sort of scratch audio to match up to audio taken by an audio recorder correct? What do you recommend to get a decent audio set up for interviews? Thanks!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 9 жыл бұрын
Ideally you would have scratch audio recorded by the camera with the video and then sync up a separate audio track recorded with a proper audio preamp and mic that is positioned close to your talent. Technically you don't HAVE to have scratch audio as long as you have a hand clap or clapper board at the start of each clip which you can use for syncing. Having scratch audio just gives you the opportunity to have your editing app automate the syncing process. As for setup, I use the Tascam DR-60DmkII and a variety of mics depending on the situation. For indoor dialogue, I use the Audio Technica AT4053B in most cases. For outdoor dialogue, I use either the RODE NTG-2 or Audio Technica AT899 lavalier. Here are previous episodes covering each: Tascam DR-60DmkII - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioPSeoCGfbhsZ7c Audio Technica AT4053b Hypercardioid Boom Mic - kzbin.info/www/bejne/onuWdH9_oKqBr6M Audio Technica AT899 Lavalier - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWXWoZmJgspqbrM

Rather than do that, I'd just get a microphone that is made for smartphones. We cover several of them here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYuupGSLZqx0bpY Consider the Aputure A.Lav. That's my favorite in terms of audio quality at less than $50 USD.

I bought the ATR-3350 mic to use with my Nikon D3200 but there is a lot of white noise in the videos. What am I doing wrong? Did you have to remove the noise with software or is it the camera?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 10 жыл бұрын
It is most likely the camera, though when the battery is running low, the signal gets really noisy like that as well. Definitely try a fresh battery to see if that makes a difference.

Wow, this is the best, most thorough comparison of lavalier mics that I have ever seen! You really touched on the most pertinent features and pros & cons of each and still managed to be extremely concise. Thank you for putting together such a helpful, educational, and interesting video. I don't know if you have done an updated version of this video or not, but I would be extremely interested in hearing your opinion comparing the newer models since several of these microphones have updated models (sometimes changes are good and sometimes not). Thanks again, excellent video! Subscribed!

Curtis, I found in the settings ios processing.. Sorry, I had never attention for! I set gain higher, the ios proces off. and 48kHz. I record but after recording the settings were again as befor in default... strange. I use today the SC6 with KV connection and two rode Lavalier ... It works and also the headphone. Crazy me that I order this because I have also the KVconnector with headphone and than splitter ordered by RadTech , very good one because it has in the female jack also 4 rings. I have told you this I guesses but do it again. Than on the two rode mics attached and it does the same as the SC6. Which differences is it, recording on 44 or 48kHz? Do you go higher with the gain?... Thanks Luc

Luc Rik Vlaemynck & Mijn beste soulmate ever The sample rate for most video is 48kHz so if you are shooting video, you will usually want to capture at 48kHz so that it matches the video file. I does not change the gain.

Hi, first...thank you for free sharing. I'm sure all community appreciate it very much. Second...I'm looking for help. I just purchased a TASCAM DR60d mkII and a MOVO GM100 lavalier mic from Amazon. I'm pretty sure both divices work well. I tested them separately (in a PC and a DSLR and with other mics). But together...it just doesn't work...at all. I mean not a single sound, even with the recorded "HIGH-PLUS" feature activated. Do you know what's the problem? Are they incompatible, and why? Thank you

+Syed Shaman sticking moleskin to the clothing opposite the mic helps prevent fabric noise. I also like hiding lavaliers in peoples' hair at their forehead when that is possible because it sounds much more open and full and doesn't run into the clothing noise issues.

would the ATR 3350 work with a zoom H5? I believe one of the add on capsules has a 3.5 mm input but i don't know if it's the right one. i was in a music shop at the weekend checking out their NTG 3 shotgun mics- which hopefully i can get in a couple of weeks!- and i noticed they were selling the ATR 3350 very cheaply
@curtisjudd

Yes, however, It'll still be pretty weak. That was the first lavalier microphone I ever used and for me at that time it was like magic simply because it was a microphone that literally sat right on the person speaking. And that helps because you get a much better signal to noise ratio vs a camera microphone. But in reality, the 3350 is pretty weak and there are much better options out there.
