Wow, thanks Nate! It was a very cool challenge. If you added a few more pounds of kit you could have a pretty bad ass kit for a full 3 seasons. Hope you have an awesome winter! Happy New Year. -Chris

Thank you for sharing. Very interesting ideas. I always believe you should have more than one way to do something. Some people might point out that you have duplicate items but it never hurts to have backup in case one is lost or doesn't work. Thanks again.

I like how you emphasize items that one is familiar with and knows how to use. Perhaps the most important key to any kit.

I hope that people do realize the importance of know how to use there items! I can't help thinking people make B.O.Bs and such and don't really know what the things do.

+jediknightofthewoods We do all love our minimal 5c kits :) It lends itself to being bushcrafty and creative while we are out. But having to be creative would not be my choice in a survival scenario!!! hahaThe very first survival book I owned has been issued to everyone taking a hunters safety class in the State of Maine since 1972. "Alone in the woods of Maine". As a young buck I remember being very fond of the idea of making sure to pack sweets in my hunting kit :) haha Take care Paul and Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope you, the misses and your beautiful new pup enjoy the rest of the summer! -Chris

Ty for sharing yours. I do have an item that is great to add. Balloons is a 5 in 1 item Signal( blow it up makes big signal like a flag and burns black. With flashlights makes good improvised "glow stick" by diffusing the light source so it can be see at all angles), container( waterproof) , waterproof fire starter and alarm system. Cheap , lightweight and multi use that takes up little room. I currently have 4 in my 5lb PSK. You can use arbor knot to seal it up

Some great ideas there Chris, most of my gear is built around comfort and not necessarily "survival" as I'm never more than a mile or two away from civilisation, but it's great food for thought in case I ever fall and break a leg or am incapacitated. Will have to start looking into this! Thanks for sharing mate, ATB Shaun

+Hawkeye Bushcraft Hey, there is something to be said about knowing your area! I am only 7 miles from work and it is mostly city landscape from there to my home. Most of these items came from that kit. But having more urban based items in your vehicle just makes sense! I have a detailed road map of both cities just in case I have to take an alternate route. Thanks for watching Shaun, it was a long, and boring video lol!!! Take care my friend -Chris

Very nice kit items. To many time we view these kit videos as one kit fits all and that is not the case. As you pointed out in this video your kit was from items you had experience with and fit your skill set and also area. That is a very important point. I appreciate the mention.

+William Collins (WC Knives) Your kit was one of the ones I liked the most. I like your style :) I used many of the items from my truck bag to assemble this one. Really the only big differences are the actual bag, starting with the water bottles full and having a lot more food. I do feel very comfortable with all these items because I know they work! Thanks for the comment William. Take care

SOL makes great items! They don't give them away though! haha I have been happy with all the gear I have purchased from them. Full disclosure - Most of these items came directly from my truck GHB! And they will be going right back into it! Really the main differences are the book bag I use is a bit bigger, the water bottles (2) are full to start, I have 3x the food and an esbit stove with plenty of fuel.

It is a great starting point for a GHB for sure. I did get two Bivies per your recommendation. Even though I think they were $50+, small price to pay I think for something that will save your life. That I guess is my philosophy. Love the budget stuff, but it is all relative really. Now I need to get into the food for the GHB...maybe you will do a vid on what you do in the future. I figure most of the time, I am 20 miles from home, so in a Blizzard/Ice/Snow what would you take. You have similar worst case scenarios that I have.

I would have put one of SOL new Heavy Duty space blanket it's 60"x 96" & 2.5 mils or get the SOL EMERGENCY SHELTER KIT which is the same 2.5 mil space blanket but has cordage and 4 light Aluminum tent pegs, compared to the Emergency SOL blanket which is 1 mil. also I would have gotten the larger 1 mil space blanket which is 60"x 96" vs 60"x 84". if you had bivvy plus the shelter kit and two additional Space blankets you could get warm enough. later

Great job and thanks for posting. That is an excellent kit and you are one of the only people I have seen yet to use a super light carry bag. Those outdoor products packable bags are great, and the new SOL escape bivy that is breathable is on my list of things to get. The main things I would change is a better light and the rolled up water bottle. I think you might have gotten a bad water bag with your sawyer mini. I have both the squeeze and mini and 5 or so of the sawyer bags several of which have been abused and I have not had a failure yet but I have heard of a lot of people having issues like that. Platipus bags are great too. the problem with the crinkled up bottle is that in the corners where is forms sharp edges they form pinholes pretty quickly because they are so thin. the other thing is that the threads don't mach the water filter. I am pretty sure that using that bottle directly on the filter was not your plan but to use a bottle where that is an option could not hurt. Tons of great items and I really like that saw, good size. Thanks again.
@windhamcabin
@windhamcabin 9 жыл бұрын
wow, all great points! I keep thinking about ways to tweak this kit. I should probably buy another roll up bag for the Sawyer. 2 bags would be safer then the plastic bottle. I was trying to do this with out buying anything though. I think I may have gotten a defective bag, I didn't abuse it but probably only got about 15 gallons tops before it broke. I also love this little packable backpack. It is light weight but suprizingly tuff. I wasn't thinking, I have the 8l ribs pack I could have used. I may try to redo the kit with that. The stihl ps-10 Is an awesome little saw. Professional grade and very light weight! Thanks for the great comment, Hope you have a great weekend! -Chris

My kit would differ slightly as I live in southern Arizona, but I think this just might be the best thought out 5 pounder that I've seen so far. In your med kit, add medical super glue and Cayenne pepper.....which will stop bleeding and disinfect the wound as well, and both weigh next to nothing. Well done Sir.

Windham Woodcraft Well Sir, living in the deserts of the southwest, I have to modify most gear/kit advice because's there is almost no YT survival hosts who do NOT live in the woodlands back east. Example, ... access to water is taken for granted back there, so fire is usually listed as number one. Not here. Water is KING!!! There are hundreds of abandoned old mines out here so water pollution is a real concern and that's why I carry both the Sawyer Mini but also the Berkey Sports bottle filter which will remove heavy metals. And I always carry an Esbit folding stove and it's fuel cubes (burning at 1300 degrees) as compared to you woods folk, decent firewood is not always easy to find at all. And I simply have little use for a fishing kit.>;)
@windhamcabin
@windhamcabin 9 жыл бұрын
+Charles Larson that is such a great perspective. We have water everywhere! But as for firewood you would die without it here! 5 months of the year is below freezing :) last year we had 4 weeks in a row well below zero. Couple that with 4 feet of snow! I hope some day to make it out to your area. It is fascinating to me. Thanks for the great comments.

The SOL Scout kit is a great core item! I bought a few from Amazon for $17 each- I don't think you can buy the items separately for that price! I think you cover the basics pretty well. One thing I'd change is the water containers. You can get Survivor bottles for $10/2 that are roll up like the green bag you have but they're ten times sturdier, plus they fit the Sawyer without modification. Overall I think you have a great little kit.

Like your approach. Survival, as in discussing kits, isn't about trying to eek out remaining alive with a bare bones minimum. Planning to survive, IMO, automatically means having as much gear & wisdom, as possible, in given circumstances, to survive. To thrive. Yes, we all know the stories of people overcoming disaster with almost nothing. Normally, they are accidents where there is little to no preparations in advance. "Survival kit" automatically means pre-planning! Making wise choices, as in making water potable, for example. Your kit has 4 & you still came under the 5 lb challenge! Trim a few inches of cordage may allow addition of a Fresnel lens, for yet another way to start a fire. (Don't remember seeing one in your kit.) Stash strips of waxed paper (tinder) to bring your total weight up to 4.9999 lbs. :-) Thanks for sharing.
@windhamcabin
@windhamcabin 9 жыл бұрын
+Oldtimer Lee I always value your comments Lee. You are right on with the pre-planning. And some peoples experience level enables them to get by with much less. I just like to have options :) The fire items I have are a ferro rod, lighter, sparker and the magnifying glass on the compass. I figure 4 was enough for me. Of course in Maine there are SO MANY resources for fire readily available its crazy!!! Also water supply as well. Great idea for the wax paper stash! Thanks a lot for sharing your wisdom! That's a great kit you put together, Chris. It's difficult to believe that it weighs just under 5 lbs. I've always been dubious concerning the 5Cs kits, and I've expressed that sentiment in a few of my videos. It is a great starting point for a kit, but I would never go on a hike with just those items. Now this 5lbs kit challenge has been doing the rounds. I am equally hesitant to jump on the band wagon. I do understand the intention of this exercise. That being to assess what we carry and get rid of the unessential, while still having the basics covered. However, I see it as just that. A fun exercise. I am all about lightening my load, but I would never sacrifice what I consider to be important gear in order to stay below some arbitrary weight limit. I think that is important for beginners to understand. It goes hand in hand with what Marc from Scouting Free expressed in his recent video about the responsibility we have to less experienced viewer as bushtubers.
@windhamcabin
@windhamcabin 9 жыл бұрын
Well said my friend. I could not build a kit weighing 5 pounds for winter time in Maine. The extra cover elements alone weigh more then that. And having to keep a fire going all night just isn't an option in all senarios. But none the less it was a good exercise! Building around the 5 c's is a great place to begin.

The izula 2 neck knife is really growing on me. I have owned it for about a year. Mike from mcq bushcraft used one for a long time. This was a very good exercise to try. I will always have a bit more kit then this but it is a pretty good baseline. Thanks for watching Paul. Take care

always good to have lightweight kit, most people pack way too much and end up leaving it n the car or at home , at least with a light kit, you may not have everything BUT...ya got something! is no good at home or in the car if its a 20 mile hike back to get it, how ya gonna do that with a broken leg or hurt ankle etc, nice to see some usefl items and ideas... cheers for sharing,

+Colonelchimp, Bushcraft, Survival and Prepping Well said Dave!!! You are absolutely right! This little exercise has yielded a kit that you have no excuse for not taking! at 5 pounds it really is the perfect hiking/ outdoor activity kit. Honestly most of this gear came from my truck get home bag. The only thing I really will change is actually starting out with water in the bottles and putting it in a slightly larger school book bag. Thanks for watching this long and boring video lol!!!

ohhhhhhh......busted! haha I will be swapping in some 39camper hooks! lol Honestly I have some in my Truck Get Home Bag. Most of these items came from that and will be going right back in. The SOL escape bivy is great! Awesome light weight bivy with a bit of heat reflective properties. It makes a light weight sleeping bag go down about 10 degrees lower!

You might want to invest in some Australian hootchie cord to replace your paracord collection. Hootchie cord is typically a 2.5mm (0.10in) braid rated at 350lb with a 3.5mm (0.15in) variety rated at 550lb. You can typically pack in excess of 100m of it into the space taken by around 15m of para-550 without compromising greatly on maximum tensile strength.

I think a good knife is the number one survival tool in any kit. If all I have is a knife, I can build a fire, catch, kill, or dig food. I can make better weapons, and depending on the part of the country I'm in, even procure potable water. I can also build shelter. A knife is the only tool that gives you a chance to survive, even if you have nothing else.Not that a knife should necessarily be included in a kit. If you don't have a knife, and preferably two, on your person as EDC, I doubt any survival kit is going to matter. If your knfe is in a kit, and something happens to that kit, you're going to die, if it's a real survival situation.I disagree about the five Cs. They're all about survival. Survival is the sole purpose of the five cs. They have nothing to do with being manly, or having a good time, or anything else except survival for a day, a week, or a year. Many of the things in your kit are more about comfort than survival. They are not the same thing. A real survival situation is one where you are going to die, if you can't take care of yourself. or can't get help. This is why the five cs are so important, and are aimed solely at survival. Most kits are aimed at, "I'm probably going to be really uncomfortable for a day or four, so how can I be more comfortable." Comfort items things like Band-Aids, little plastic tarps, tiny plastic ponchos, pain pills, light gloves, coffee, food that won't get you through a few hours, bug dope, etc. The confort items won't last long, of course, but the problem is that while you have the five Cs, most of them are flimsy, and won't last long at all, either. The average survival situation may last only seventy-two hours, but betting your life on an average stay is not very wise.The five Cs are one hundred percent about survivability, not just for the two or three days you're almost certainly going to survive without anything, but for however long it takes. Long after all those comfort items have been used up, and long after all the flimsy Five Cs items most take have worn out. The same is true of anything that takes batteries that you can't recharge. That's a comfort item, not a survival item. A survival light is one you can recharge, preferably with a hand crank. Even a waterproof bag that is going to tear after a few uses is not a survival item. Such kits have nothing to do with life and death survival situations. They're for comfort while you're waiting for, at most, three to five days to get out of your uncomfortable situation.

+James Ritchie Why are you assuming that I don't know everything you just stated? And why do you assume I would use all of the items in this kit up in a few days? Why do you think I wouldn't take the 5 c's items out of this kit and put them on my person as soon as a situation arises? Why are you assuming my edc lacks all the 5 c components???? -Did you notice I have a full tang high carbon steel blade with ferro rod attached in this kit?-3 sure fire ways to start fire-a metal container for boiling water plus a ton of water carrying and purification items-3 cover elements including a military poncho and my clothing at the time-a ton of cordageThere are your 5 C's all covered and with redundancies. Now lets review-first aid covered-compass Navigation covered-candling device covered-signaling devices covered-canvas sail needle covered-cargo tape covered-cotton bandanna coveredhmmmmm......it would seem I have all the 10 c's in this kitplus redundancies in those items as well.-I have a few food items to help boost calories while effecting rescue or hunting for other food.-A convenient way to comfortably transport this kit.-Oh wait, that's right!!!!! The most important! Knowledge and actual experience! I have decades of experience in the wilderness with far less then what is in this kit! But if you are implying that I should leave it all behind and only take 5 items because that is all you NEED then you completely missed the point of not only what I said in the opening and closing of this video but you are missing the point of the challenge. Make a survival kit weighing less then 5 pounds.What if you are in an urban environment? What if you are not alone and the people you are with aren't experienced? What if you are incapacitated and that inexperienced person needs to rescue both of you with what is in a "kit"???? I have done extensive 5 c adventuring in very harsh conditions. It was fun, a real challenge. I loved it. But why the hell would you make things hard on yourself in times of desperation????

@windhamcabin
@windhamcabin 8 жыл бұрын
Adam Seltzer Well, this plastic bottles is one of the very thin, cheap bottles. It can be rolled and unrolled several times without cracking. Since this is a survival kit it wouldn't be rolled and unrolled many times. Thanks for watching! -Chris

I don't trust the crinkly bags as water containers. And water is one of the big needs. I think person should have at least 2, 32 oz containers for water. My thinking has been: keep one full, one empty, and the pickup has a big water jug. If I leave the truck for a trek, I top off the bottles and myself, before leaving. I live in an arid area.

And yep, water is heavy. And don't fool around with condoms, and baggies to carry water. Your kidding yourself with those. Use good water containers. That's good weight.

How did man survive for the first 250,00 years without compass, flashlight, multi-tool?
@jamesaritchie2
@jamesaritchie2 8 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on what you call a survival kit. There are five OUNCE survival kits on the market. One of the very best, The Henry Repeating Survival Kit has everything anyone should need to survive, and it weighs 6.2 ounces. I could do nicely with that kit for a couple of weeks, minimum. Probably a lot longer. Permanently, if I can also take along the items I always carry on my belt or in my pockets. Without a pre-made kit, a knife makes things a heck of a lot easier, but I don't NEED any items to survive for a good while term.. Historically, many individuals from many cultures wandered all over wilderness areas, sometimes for many months, carrying only a knife, a bowl, something to make fire with, a blanket, and that's it. How long is the kit supposed to keep you alive? For up to seventy-two hours, you need comfort items more than anything else. For long term, I'd want hunting, trapping, and fishing gear far more than any of the other items, except a steel cup. Five pounds of such gear is worth two hundred pounds of anything else. I would also ditch the hard candy. It will do a diabetic no good. For that, you need a bottle filled with real sugar. I'd also get a Platypus bag for the Sawyer Mini. It fits, and will last far longer than the Walmart bag. Anyway, I really don't understand the concept of a five pound survival kit. That's huge for survival, and small for what people normally carry.
@windhamcabin
@windhamcabin 8 жыл бұрын
Great input Richie. I think that alot of what you mentioned is 100% true. The only variable is the skill level of who is trying to survive. All the hunting and trapping gear in the world won't help someone with no experience. And they are wilderness living tools not survival tools. The original challenge if you will was to assemble a kit weighing 5 pounds or less. I wasn't going to purchase anything for this task. Just use what I had available. The items here are all parts of various kits I have used for some time. I am familiar with them and know they work. That is another important factor in a survival situation, knowing your gear. A person's location is another huge factor in what to carry for sure. If I am lost in my wilderness and I have this kit I am 100 % sure that I could survive easily with these items until rescued or effecting my own rescue. The hard candy would help a person with diabetes but that's not why I pack them. Thanks for the comment. I hope you and yours are having a great spring!

Just a tip my friend, remove this fucking piece of metal that is suposed to be a security on your bic lighter, it'll give you a hard time to light it up if your hands goes wet or frozen, plus it'll allow you to light it up easier wich mean less use on the flint and less waste on the gas. Stay safe! :)
