*please don't call all rock shuffle grooves a 'variation of the Purdie shuffle'* i suppose rossanna and all other shuffles are now 'named' a variation of god Purdie.

This lad is a good instructor. Besides breaking things down slowly and progressing gradually, he has EXCELLENT vocal interpretive skills. When I was his age, all we had -- I know, I know, "I walked two miles in ten feet of snow to my drum lesson" -- was a record that we had to raise and lower the needle a thousand times to figure out parts like those double-stroke fills mother-effers like Ian Paice were doing on Deep Purple tunes. Later, it was cassettes and then when CDs came about, we thought THAT was high tech. Cheers, lads. At 65, I still practice 2 to 4 hours EVERY day.

Aw geez… I’ve been working on these for YEARS and you play them all really well. Interestingly, I’ve just earned a slight improvement in my ability to play these grooves just by watching you play them from this camera angle. Somehow, being able to see it done properly from this viewpoint must have given my brain something it needed to decode how these are done. Thanks boss! 😎👍👍

I have watched some of your videos now, and as a Swede I recognize much. Might be stuff that is common in Sweden? You have great explanations and teach very well! In "the shuffles every drummer should know" I do count in some blues shuffles (I have mainly played the blues). ZZ top with La Grange is interesting. He only does the shuffle with his left hand. His right hand goes straight on the highhat. The playing on the rim-thing, also has a shuffle feeling to it. Since it goes kind of fast, it is difficult to hear what he actually plays, but variations are possible. Anyways, I think drummers should know some blues shuffles too. All the best and keep up the good work!

Hello CJ. Lots of comments here. Great vid. I play all of those, except 4 Texas shuffle. Never practiced left hand shuffle w/backbeat. I think it's hardest one. There's version of it called "swing shuffle". It's how Buddy Rich would shuffle-I don't do that either. Need to hit shed once again.
@ThatSwedishDrummer Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah it's quite tricky at first, but if you practice at a really slow tempo - you're gonna do fine!!

Just one addition: it would be nice to have a jazz shuffle, Art Blakey style, as well. Basically the foundation of the Texas shuffle but more loosely swung and with different dynamics.
@Charles53412 Жыл бұрын
Shuffles change by region. For example the Texas Shuffle is a west southern style. Then you have the Detroit Shuffle, The Chicago Shuffle, The L.A. Shuffle, the New Orleans Shuffle, the Memphis Shuffle, the Atlanta Shuffle and the New York Shuffle. These Shuffles developed decades ago and really took off during the Jazz era of the 20's. Then continued to develop as music genres changed etc.. Nice sticking on the grooves !! Keep On Drumming !

Great playing and the tight but resonant drum sounds and clear Paiste cymbals sound really good (I mostly use Paiste 2002 and Signature). As I don't have the means nor time to do physical drum practising (neighbours and busy working), I tend to do mental drumming to begin with which, I think, nobody has mentioned yet. I listen a lot, break it down in my head and slow it down and then I can do something on a practise pad and tap my foot on the floor. Can anyone else relate to this? Your videos on this are very informative so, thank for this. Sometimes I do 6/8 or 12/8 without realising it and people have asked me how I do that but I have no idea as I haven't broken it down at that point. We keep learning of course!

On the Rosanna shuffle, I add from time to time a kick at the same time as the last snare drums just before the double kick. Jeff does it in the original song. And it gives variety to the groove. Awesome video. It tooks me a real couple of weeks, playing the Rosanna every day before mastering it. Then to groove it, it requires months. I think I m getting there now. Cheers bro and thanks for the video.

Great job CJ! Have you ever listened to the extended fade out version (that didn't make the album)of Ramble On by Zep? If not, it's worth your while as a drummer. As a Bass player I listen to it to get pumped up, and warmed up for rehearsals, but JPJ and John Henry Bonham kill it! Bonham's playing is so good that it sounds looped, (Is it live or is it Memorex?) Us elders in the crowd will remember that commercial. I marvel every time I listen to it...Just subscribed!

Wow! I'm from Texas and I'm very proud that we actually have a shuffle named after us! :) I always just called it a shuffle, I guess since I'm FROM Texas. I mean, I never really added the "Texas" part. I guess it's like Old Fashioned Oatmeal. I doubt it was called "Old Fashioned" back in the old days. They probably just called it Oatmeal. Just like I called it a Shuffle. Oh well. Good day everyone!

Haha yeah, some people also call it "Chicago Shuffle" or the "Double Shuffle". Their basically the same thing

Texas Shuffle: Check! Purdie Shuffle: Not really. Purdie 12/8 : Not even close Bonham Shuffle: Yes almost. Rosanna Shuffle: Won't ever happen in this or the next ten lifetimes 🙃 One of the many things in these types of grooves for me that makes it hard is the ghost note before or after accent on the snare that derails the groove for me.
@ThatSwedishDrummer Жыл бұрын
It's not easy, indeed! The trick is to practice it really slowly for a long time and gradually increase the tempo. Once you reach a tempo where it's stil tricky, stay there and practice more. Repetition, repetition repetition! 😃
