Best Sites to Watch French Films
1. Netflix
One can’t write a post about watching French films online without mentioning Netflix.
Netflix offers a little over 150 French language titles. It’s completely possible to turn off the subtitles on (most of) these, but the only titles Netflix has that can support French subtitles are…American titles. So, if you want a little extra reading practice while you binge watch your favorite Netflix TV shows, pop those on when applicable.
2. Hulu
What makes Hulu one of the best places to watch French films is its catalog of over 700 Criterion Collection titles. If you’re unfamiliar with the Criterion Collection, it’s a collection of classic films from around the world (art house, historically significant and otherwise). Since France is one of the cornerstones of world cinema, there are lots of French films in the collection.
In addition to pretty much every classic French film you need to watch in order to be an expert on the subject, there’s also a sizable collection of modern French films and even a few French TV shows like “Spiral” (an investigation drama).
3. KZbin
KZbin is a fantastic resource for learning French. But it goes beyond French tutorials and stand-up comedy. Fun fact: you can rent movies on KZbin, and the selection is fantastic.
Streaming in HD, you can rent movies for around $2.99, which is a great way to rent considering the best option for finding French films-going to a locally-owned video store-is a thing of the past. Make it a special occasion and find a friend (French-speaking or not) who’s willing to watch foreign masterpieces and get that popcorn popping!
There’s one downside to using KZbin-not all titles give you subtitle options. But, I suppose you could just avert your eyes from the annoying English text on the bottom of the screen. An easy fix, in my opinion.
4. iTunes
If you’re going on a trip and need to load up your devices with movies, iTunes is a great way to access French films. You can rent them for around $2.99-$4.99 per film, or buy them to have and to hold forever (for around $9.99-$19.99). They have a very large selection, including timeless classics and newer releases in French cinema. Your odds will be the best with iTunes if you’re looking for a specific French title and can’t find it elsewhere.
Another plus with iTunes is that you often have more control over subtitles compared to other sites. Once it’s on your device, you can enable or disable the subtitles and in some cases put on French subtitles.
In short, iTunes may not be the cheapest option for watching French films online, but it can be convenient and it’s the best way to add certain titles permanently to your catalog of French content.
5. Amazon video
Similar model to iTunes! Rentable French films.
Enjoy watching the best French movies of all time! #frenchfilms #frenchcinema #frenchmovies

I'm a bit sad there was no mention of animation, France one of the biggest producers of animated films in the world and there's stuff for everyone, Kirikou is a classic, of course every single Astérix movie deserves to be seen, and I watched Le Magasin des Suicides during my Halloween-horror/scary movies week, I liked it a lot. The rec of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort reminded me of Huit Femmes which is basically a game of Clue with an all female cast and also a musical.

As someone trying to learn French, I watch as many French language films and TV shows as I can and I think the one that impacted me the most was "Marie Heurtin" about a deaf and blind girl raised by Catholic nuns... with a sad ending. I just wanted to watch French language stuff to learn the language, not have my heart ripped out by something very emotional. I recommend it.

there is not a lot of good tv shows over here (exept for animation or documentaries). But the best and almost only i have in mind is Kaamelott , it's french comedy about king arthur really popular in france. There also is H , a comedy again in a hospital; but really french cinema is more about movies than tv show. If your are looking for movies look in the comments of this video there is plenty of good recommendations.

There's a TV series called 'La mante' with ex-James Bond girl Carole Bouquet in the role of an imprisoned serial killer helping her cop son to catch a copycat of her 20-25 years later. Kaamelot by Alexandre Astier is the most hilarious short-time series and the film ending the series is for 2020. Lots of Canal + productions are extraordinary like Braquo or Hippocrate. And there's a Netflix prod called Dix pour cent (Call my agent is the English title) which is a very French mix of humoristic comedy, real life dramas and romantic complex situations set into the world of movies, actors and their agents which is kind of over the top yet completely realistic. Hope that helps.

Two of the most beautiful films about the life of a painter are A Sunday in the Country (1984 Bertrand Tavernier, director) and Renoir (2012) about Auguste Renoir and his son Jean Renoir, who became the great film director. My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle (1990--I got the title wrong below) are two beautiful films about the childhood of filmmaker Marcel Pagnol. Recently there are new versions of Pagnol's stories The Well Digger's Daughter (2011), Marius (2013) and Fanny (2013) by director/actor Daniel Auteuil.

My favorite French movie for 2018 is "Le Jeu" with only one known actress but a screenplay, interpretations and dialogue to beat all others, all taking place in a single room, thus with unity of time and place like the ancient Greek comedies, and a couple of important points of ethics or philosophy thrown in for good measure!

French movies in Paris with English subtitles! What a great idea! I speak French, but the delivery on screen - and on stage too - is usually too fast and sometimes garbled for me... sad. But the French specialty in recent years has been comedy, and comedy is very difficult to translate (I'm a translator, so I know this). There is also slang, puns, idiom and certain common sayings that can be translated literally but mean nothing to the foreign reader. I wonder how you do it....

J'adore ! Mon copain est britannique et ne parle pas français. C'est super dur de trouver mes films français préférés avec des sous-titres ! On vient à Paris pour quelques jours en janvier donc on va essayer de venir à l'un des évênements !

Completely off-topic, I met a Kiwi last night who swore no one in the US ever guesses correctly where he's from based on his accent. I guessed New Zealand on the first try, thanks to all the time I've spent listening to Rosie speak. :-)

I am not French, don't speak French, understand some, but I do like French movies. Two of my favorites are Amilie and Le Chevre. Sorry I don't know how to put accents where they belong on my mobiles.

I love Peau d’Ane with a youngish Catherine Deneuve, based on Charles Perrault’s fairytale. Anything with Louis de Funès, Les Visiteurs, Les Choristes... Recently ( it came out in January 2018) Le Rire de Ma Mère, with an 11 year-old boy called Adrien who is v shy. His parents are divorced, but on extremely good terms. Adrien goes to a theatre class to help overcome his timidity, falls in love for the first time and deals with his mother’s illness.

To gain more insight in french comedy i would recommand "Le diner de cons" , "La grande vadrouille" (starring de Funes) )and "OSS 117 Rio ne repond plus" all are masterpieces! Latest is also from Hazanavicius (director of The Artist) and among the actors Jean Dujardin (also in The Artist Oscar winner) Few more worth watching: Asterix et Obelix missionc Cleopatre La cite de la peur OSS 117 Le caire nids d'espion La tour montparnasse infernal Les trois freres Problemos
