Another idea to offer plants in those hot months is straw flowers. I’ve never grown any myself, but do have them on my list to do this summer. Love your channel and information, not too keen on the title, but I’ll take what I can get. Lol, hugs, love and lots of planting from Texas!

I loved my straw flower this year and have left them in to see if they will come back for me. I also have new seeds for different colours that I will be planting in spring, more peaches and light yellow as opposed to the bright oranges and pinks I had this year.

Great recap! About your summer problem: Have you ever thought of planting up a small space with perennial drought tolerant plants like lavender, roses, catmint, bearded irises, flowering salvias? In our area in Austria (close to Hungary) we have very hot and dry summers and those plants survive in our garden pretty well... Many greetings! Katharina

Thanks for the suggestions; I have salvia but no lavender or bearded iris (which I love) so I maybe need to get them in the ground. I have avoided roses simply because I am on an allotment and not my own garden and am only guaranteed my spot for 4 years.

I would join a garden club and get a lot of good tips on what works . Drive around to o an see what everybody else does

I am constantly peeking in peoples gardens 🤣 gardening in Japan is very different with a focus more on flowering trees and shrubs with little under planting or flowers. My local park always has a great clump of rudbeckia in the summer and there are some great cosmos around just not on my allotment. Lillies grow like weeds here but I am hugely allergic. My little flower patch is definitely a rarity but I would love to meet others near me interested in growing.

Try growing the native flowers, you might have more success.

If you look at traditional Japanese gardens you will notice there are lots of trees and shrubs (Sakura, plum blossom, hydrangea, wisteria). There aren’t a massive number of natives suited to cut flowers. Iris, carnations, lily (which I am hideously allergic to), chrysanthemum, anemone and Japanese ranunculus. It’s one of the reasons I find it so hard to buy seed.
