Recent archaeological findings, particularly the discovery of fossilized human footprints in New Mexico dating back 21,000 to 23,000 years ago, shows that people were present in North America significantly earlier than previously thought, showing that Native Americans were not the first inhabitants of the continent; this evidence challenges the long-held "Clovis First" theory which placed the earliest human presence much later.

I'm a 65 year old American, grew up in PA, lived in TX for five years and now live in New England. I've never owned a gun, never held a gun, never seen anyone fire a gun. I've seen people with hunting rifles and police with handguns, I've heard hunting rifles fire in the distance. I never had a reason to own a gun, but I defend the 2nd Amendment, people have the right to protect themselves and their families. Many Americans believe that Congress can pass laws prohibiting guns, this is not true; the Constitution would have to be amended, and those who want gun control, understand that attempts to amend the Constitution to remove gun rights will fail.

The fact remains, the majority want *common sense gun laws*. It doesn't have to be outlawing all guns. But there's also no need for the average citizen to possess guns made for war. And that CAN in fact be passed by Congress that doesn't go against the constitution.

@Andrew-Collet please inform us which "guns made for war" are available for the average citizens to own. I carried an M-16 my entire military career and the last time I looked, you can't own an M-16 or any other automated firing weapon without a special stamp which is damn near impossible to get. If you are talking about an AR-15, NOBODY in the military carries it. It's a semiautomatic just like most handguns and some hunting rifles and shotguns. But please dazzle me with your knowledge of " weapons of war".

Europeans think that North Americans or people that live in the USA do not have a long history. They think that the USA only started around the 1600's. They are WRONG! There were people thousands of years before the white men of Europe came to America. There were millions of Native American people in America, Canada, and Mexico before any white settlers came here. The reason they think that there is no history is because there is no written evidence before the first European settlers came here. With the exception of the Eastern Cherokee tribe there is no formal written language, and that did not come about until sometime in the 1700's when a cherokee native by the name of Sequoyah became close with some of the "white men" and took the time to create a syllabus of characters and words to engauge in conversation. The cherokee used this syllabus to converse with the white man because they were tired of not being able to understand what the white man was saying and what their intentions were. I could be wrong, but there are no other tribes that have written language. All other tribes learn to speak their native tongue by speaking only. All of the Native American history before the white settlers came were taught by word of mouth generation after generation. All history was done through stories from the elders passing down knowledge to the young ones. Lessons that are still going on today through the native communities. So, in general, yes, there are many thousands of years in history in North America. It was just not written until the white man showed up on its shores.

1. Guns...it really depends on the state. In Texas guns are generally more prevalent to see. New York and California really have the lowest percentage. 2. In terms of Obesity the US is at 42.87% the United Kingdom is 28.71%. In terms of overweight (overweight + clinically obese combined) is 69.8% in the US and 64.3% in the UK. The United States increase in Obesity started about 10 years before the UK's increase so they have both dramatically increased over the past 50 and 40 years respectively. The links between the US, Canada, UK, and Western Europe is so tightly coupled in modern times that the same trends impact us all. 3. History is interesting as there is a shorter span in the United States, but there is tremendously more diversity in that history. So really it's kind of an argument of breadth vs depth. Either way all humans value history and culture, so it's really a pointless argument. 4. Fast food is a thing, and I think it really ties into fact #2 and life balance. Fast food has increased dramatically because people value time. The more family/work/life stresses you are under generally the more you tend to find yourself favoring quick meal solutions. The United States lead the UK in terms of changing that life balance (people work now than they did 40-50 years ago, families have more working members too, people have more economic pressures). And just like in Fact #2 there was about a 10 year difference between that trend happening in the United States and that tend also appearing in the UK. It's just a cultural shift. 5. Transportation is a challenge in all areas where population density drops. Within cities transportation is generally excellent, the farther from the cities you go the less options you tend to have. That is true of the UK as well. The major difference is there a is a lot farther out from cities in the United States than possibly exists in the UK. In the end its purely a matter of total distance and land area.

The united states as a country has shorter history but this land has been inhabited way before Europeans arrived, there were wars, development, culture, arts, mysticism, etc... Spain was created as a country in the 15th century, Italy even way more recent, Germany, the list goes on and on. You don't count everything that happened before the creation of those countries as history, seems a little double standard to me. In regards of overweight, yes we have a big percentage of overweight people but we also have the highest percentage of fittest people, again, double standard. We have more restaurant joints, supermarkets cater to healthy habits than anywhere else, and we also have more fast food joints than anywhere else. Public transport is perfectly fine in most of the bigger metros and in between the bigger and medium cities, but don't expect a train connection to some random small town 500 miles away of any major city. Remember we drive for short distances and fly for the rest. Imagine me complaining of not b3ing able to fly to a medium city in Europe and saying your transportation network sucks. Yes we can fly pretty much everywhere, even smaller cities. Traverse city is a small city in Northern Michigan and has more flights than Zaragoza, in Spain with 800000 people. We're developed in a different way. Our interstate system connects the entire country and most cities and our cargo freight train system is the most comprehensive in the world. Hsr, well yeah, we suck big time in that department. Guns, most Americans don't own a gun, there are many many guns in this country yet I have never seen one since I moved to this country 20 years ago. People in the country side have them. Most of them hunt and also live in the middle of nowhere, if something happened, police will take time to reach their house, so they have it just in case. I would too if I was in that particular situation. So yeah, I'm glad you were able to see that those stereotypes are way exaggerated although based in some real things.

@@AmericanNoiseMaker I've had carry permits both in CT and PA. The CT permit required the State Police to do a FBI background check, required me to have passed an NRA gun safety course and I had to get fingerprinted. It also took over 6 months to be approved and the permit was only good for a few years (this was in the early 90's and things might have changed). In contrast the PA carry permit was issued by the county sheriff's office and from what I remember, each sheriff could make things easier or difficult. I lived in York county at the time so the only thing that was required of me was statements of support from two locals in "good standing" and it took less than 3 days for approval. On the other hand, I remember people who lived in the neighboring Lancaster county complaining about how difficult it was to get a carry permit from their sheriff. So not only can it vary from state to state, it can vary even within a state. Now, when I moved to NYC, I realized that there was absolutely no way I was going to be able to get a NYC carry permit (the only civilians I knew who had them were the Hasidic Jews who worked in NYC's Diamond District and carried lots of uncut diamonds in their pockets so they were allowed to carry - I don't believe that Diamond District in midtown Manhattan exists anymore). So I sold all my guns before I moved to NYC and I had to sell to someone who had a Federal Firearms License and fill out a ton of paperwork. While I have since moved from NYC, I currently own no firearms.

We don’t run around with guns drawn looking for a fight LOL! As far as transportation, yes, Europe is probably much better in that department, but consider the fact that taking a train or bus from one end of the country to the other will take 4 or 5 days of continuous travel. Even flying from one end of the country to the other takes 5 hours. In fact, most of us prefer to fly just as a time saver. I once took a train from Chicago to Tampa and it took 2 days. After that I drove, and stopped to see sights along the way, which is more preferable than 2 unpleasant days on a train.

If you went to some red states (middle of the country) you'd see more obesity. It's getting better everywhere compared to the 80's but still pretty obese as a society on the whole. Same with guns, you'll see more of those in red states. Our history is young compared to most countries only because of simple math, we are a young country. We have a ton of restaurant options, fast, casual, fine dining, food truck food, all over the place in all the states the selection is nice. Public Transport is decent in big cities but rubbish in smaller towns. Come on back any time, we enjoy having people from other countries to visit AND move here. :)

As you probably know from my many posts over the years, I live in northern IL. A few hundred miles south of here in the E. St. Louis area is a World Heritage Site named Cahokia Mounds, which was visited within the past 6 mo. or so by Laurence of Lost in the Pond. That civilization was in its heyday 1050-1350 AD, with a population of 15-20,000 inhabitants, which was larger than London at that time.

Just a few comments, first off on seeing guns, remember you have traveled to some of the parts of the US with the most restrictive gun laws (New York, and California, where carry permits require strong justification, and even then are rarely granted, Also until fairly recently Texas was a concealed carry with permit only state, with open carry and concealed carry without permit only becoming legal in the last couple of years. If you were to go to a more open carry friendly state such as Arizona you would probably have a different experience (open carry is only legal in about 30 states, there are several states that allow concealed carry with permit, but no open carry). Also on public transit you did tend to visit places that have above average public transit system

The strong justification required for handgun carry was thrown out by the Supreme Court in 2022. Texas was open carry and concealed carry with a license before it went to no license required. The license gives more carry benefits however.

Thank you for debunking some myths. The whole "Americans eat fast food all the time" must come from our fast food being exported to the UK and Europe. I can't remember the last time I ate fast food. My mother used to take my to McDonald's occasionally when I was a kid. I think my niece and nephew have had it once, maybe. They're teenagers. For many people, it's a very occasional thing. And some people eat it because it's cheap. It's certainly not considered the best of American food.

In the US here, Yes guns are everywhere BUT 99.999% of the time, they're not on display. Most of us in the US who own firearms have a hunting rifle or a shotgun, few have multiple guns, fewer choose to conceal (can't be visible) carry, and fewer own military/multi-shot, semi automatic weapons. So yes there are guns, but not as bad as portrayed by tv and the movies. The US is huge and diverse, you will tend to see all shapes and sizes of us and in all states of fitness. Transport and public transportation OUTSIDE of major cities is at best sparse BUT remember the UK is the size of a few states in the northeast US and France (larger EU nation) can fit inside of Texas. The US in the past ONLY nationalized the railroads/airlines etc. during the world wars, then they were returned to private ownership. Right now 99% of the railroads in the US are owned by 3 private companies, NS, CSX and UP, Most mass transit or commuter rail have to run on their tracks. These companies are NOT interested in passenger traffic and leave it to the hybrid private/public Amtrak to handle that.

1. New York is not gun friendly. Mostly guns are carried by criminals there. 2. Your fast food is not as tasty, but it's probably healthier. 3. Generally, Americans eat more and are less active than the 1950s or 60s and hence are heavier on average by comparison. 4. Apart from big city dwellers, public transportation is not practical nor desirable. This is the land of the automobile and wide open spaces.

I know my nephew has one, but he carries it concealed and lives in Idaho. As far as fast food goes, think about all of the people you see in a grocery store buying produce to cook with. They are not going to do this if they only ate fast food and it is cheaper to make your own meals. And the press doesn't talk about people who are not overweight. They only talk about things that are mostly negative, in my opinion.

I really wish you’d gone to a Mission while in California. I’ve taken Brits to one and they look at the dates and are always surprised. Since, as you’ve mentioned, your knowledge of the American history pretty much follows when the British started colonization here. And California, etc, were empty before the gold rush. When before the Spanish came here there were tons of people already here with vibrant cultures and the Spanish arriving came here and worked to erase all those cultures in ways worse than the British early colonization efforts did, but beyond that we do have buildings that are multiple centuries old still here mostly still standing (understanding of earthquakes and how to build for them not yet understood by the Europeans).
