I've seen the toothpaste one for cleaning shoes about 8 years ago, its used to clean and brighten leather shoes of any colour. You have to apply it with your finger, wait for it to dry then wipe with a warm wet cloth.

I am going to try the toothpaste hack. And anyone reading this comment before throwing out your shoes, unless torn or ripped apart, please look into areas and organizations in your area for the homeless, domestic violence shelters as well as those who ship internationally to impoverished countries. MANY places/people will take them used and give them to those in need, I am one of those people. Or list them for free on places like Offerup, LetGo or Craigslist. Something as simple as your used shoes(and clothes) can help an adult or child who doesn't have the means to afford them. And I am going to try this toothpaste idea.
