There's a high hand promotion at my local room that I think induces a lot of players to ask for check downs. I agree with what you are saying in general about "I'll check-raise my mom!" In our local though, I've never seen someone sandbag after hitting the high-hand. Usually the table celebrates and the winner buys a round. Its still strange sometimes though, when there's a lot of money in the pot from preflop betting, I'd never ask or give a checkdown.

I see the “check it down” question come up as an alternative to chopping the blinds. In other words, folds to the blinds and someone wants to do a set amount preflop and check it down.

Really like the video! Over the past 2 weeks I've blown through pretty much your entire channels worth of videos. I'm heading down to AC in a bit to play and I haven't played regularly in a few years so I wanted a refresher. Your "beat 1/2" playlist has really helped refresh my fundamentals, and I've always been that guy who is "beating the game" but that just means I win a small amount. Last time I went to AC, I spent literally 10+ hours there, and I drove home with winnings that just covered gas and tolls. Random suggestion based on other poker channels I saw, but you may want to plug your other videos/services either at the front or at some point mid video rather than at the end. The "beat 1/2" playlist is probably your most valuable series to average watchers, and then your coaching you could just mention earlier. Lots of people will shut the video down when you're wrapping up!

One that I like to always check before making a decision in situations where I'm facing a very polarizing bet to try to figure out if it might be a bluff or not is to look at a persons neck..if their jugular vain is kicking like a mule on their neck really fast odds are they are hoping you fold. Remember though you'll probably be able to see it anyway cause being all in or betting really big and knowing your opponent is staring at you is a stressful situation for anyone, so just seeing it and knowing their BP is elevated isn't really enough. But when its really fast and obvious it usually means fear and that usually means bluff. Its more trustworthy than a lot of tells because its very hard to hide or fake.

Nice video. I’ll share some reliable tells too. When a player is playing with his chips like he is ready to call any bet, when they are in position without the betting lead, usually can’t call a bet. Timing tells, like a snap call, is almost always a weak hand or a draw in an attempt to keep you from betting later streets. When someone picks up their chips and slams them on the table or places them way out in the middle is usually a bluff. I have found a couple players do this with strong hands but that is not the norm. Hands to the face after placing a bet, like a nose scratch or pushing glasses back in place is normally a sign of a weak hand. I have occasionally seen the opposite be true so I just takes one showdown to figure out what this means, usually. When you have a decision facing a bet if your opponent is holding his cards up, like on the side, like they are ready to “fast roll” and ready to “showdown” is almost always a bluff or weak hand. The involuntary chip glance when the flop comes out is always a sign of strength or liking the flop. Usually bet sizing tells are usually more reliable than physical tells if you just pay attention to your opponents bet sizes in certain spots. Again, enjoy the vlogs and the content. Thanks.

People do occasionally "check it down" at my local card house, but its almost exclusively when their hand has potential to make a high hand and the action would have otherwise folded to them (for example, when they normally chop the blinds they will say "let's play" and this is understood to mean check it down). If they switch from chopping to actually playing after seeing their cards, the dealer will get mad at them, although its not actually against the rules.

On you #2 tell. I do my best to always act the same with my hands. If it is a bad hand that I am going to fold. I still put a chip on the cards. One tell I deal with is the Old rec. player directly to my left has a stack of chips in his hands. And when you are getting ready to bet he puts his hand forward. As threading if you bet I will call. But if he has a good hand he would not want to make you feel threaten. He would want you to bet so he can raise.

The phrase you said, you'd check raise your mom... my grandma would stare you down all 4' 11" of her, and take you to the bank. Surely a stranger or a reg gets no free passes on the table. Tell #2, I make sure to cap my cards with crap hands that I know I'm going to fold, if anyone is trying to pay attention to it they will sometimes make huge mistakes. Especially limping big pairs on my bb when I cap my cards, hoping for the limp-3bet and I just check BB, flop better and win stacks or flop nothing and fold for the same price.

I use a version of the acting distracted tell a little differently. When I bluff all-in, I wait for something plausible I could be distracted by and look at it, often while taking a bite of a snack. My goal is to act as if I know the outcome of the hand, I'm just waiting for the opponent to decide whether to pay me off. Works tolerable well.
@louorlando10233 жыл бұрын
In any game with a flop, the longer a player stares at the cards in his hand after the flop, there's less of a chance he's made a hand. To wit, if you flopped the nuts and/or a very strong hand, you don't need to stare at it for very long. Players who continue to stare at the cards in their hand are pretty much in Search Mode. You can safely bet into them and they will most lucky relinquish their hand.

I never check it down and see it a ton myself and it drives me nuts!!! Same tells happening at good ol Hollywood in Toledo also lol Curious question since you play $2/5 way more frequently than I do...how often do chop pots happen between the blinds there and how do you handle it? For me it's always awkward and I'm happy to chop, but esp. during the high hand promo's people want to play to see the flop, and obv. there is only $4 in the pot even when they make their hand, now it's super awkward and obvious to the dealer because they have to say a code word to get the pot up to $30 to qualify. Then you gotta trust them to pay you IF their hand holds up. It's just really awkward every time this happens no matter how you try to approach it....someone always gets super pissed!! If' I'm in the SB and have a hand I just raise it to $10 ....same with the button and then hear them say....chop blocker and get mad! I then proceed to raise the button EVERY time if folded to me lol Thanks for the videos and your time!! You forgot about getting all loosey goosey eating at the table and then immediately stop eating to call or raise or they stop a conversation ....ALWAYS a strong hand!

Tony G played a hand with Helmuth where he looked at his cards very quickly and lied that he was calling in the dark. Phil fell for the lie and got in the pot with Tony G's better hand. The table razzed Tony for breaking etiquette...by lying! What most viewers need to understand is bluffing is a part of the game, you better be good at it and the other players are your opponents! They are trying to get all your money and knock you out AND telling you to play in a manner that suits them...don't do it.
@kmsnow62925 жыл бұрын
Perhaps a few other small things to add. 1)This may be the opposite of the ready-to-go tell so let's call it ready-to-fold tell where people pick up their 2 cards after looking at them and can't wait to throw them into the muck. 2)Verbal angling tell. Back in the older days, Jamie Gold was famous for this. I see a lot of rec players today still try this but they don't realize how easy the good players can see through them. It's better just be quiet and play. 3)Lastly, the reverse tell. Some people may know all these tells and sometimes, against certain opponents, they will use the tell in reverse to fool them. It sorts of like the "I know you know I know ..." thing. Be aware.

There are lots of people who DO NOT consider it unethical and will take your money any way they can. Hide chips in their stack. Go north, go south. Lie about saying call or all in. Check and when they see you check back, try to bet and pretend they didn't check. I had one guy in multiway pots who would hide his cards with his hands and let action go through. The winner would show his hand, then muck...and then this guy unveiled his hidden cards and say "He mucked, the pot is mine." The casino let him do this once (which to me was once too often). I saw another couple who would chip signal, and he would inflate the pot or she would, and then the other would reraise...reported them, they never got to play together again. I've seen two friends (sitting side by side so they are idiots) who would show each other their cards midplay. I've seen people people whisper their action. One guy used to wear thick aviator glasses, and while staring at you through the side of his lens, would motion like hes going all in (small pump fake, not committing by casino house rules)...many of his opponents would start to fold and he'd shove. I pointed it out to my friend: later my friend had the nuts, and the guy did the small pump fake, so my friend grabbed the corner of his cards like he was going to toss them, and the guy shipped it...CALL! Hilarious. At Fallsivew (ONE OF THE WORST MANAGED rooms I have ever been in), the dealers turned blind eye to regulars antics ALL THE TIME, I witnessed lots of chip dumping and going north...one dealer even said to a guy contemplating a fold (and I'm not paraphrasing): "Well you have to call, the pot is huge." WHAT !!! I saw another regular who would quickly peak at his cards when he was late in action, then pretend the cards were laying as dealt (he would lean back as if watching the TV), and then say "I haven't looked, I raise $60" (and magically he always had KK, AA or AK). In Miami, a guy mucked his hand, and realized it was a chop ($4000 all in on a flop of A54, he had A5, other guy had AA, turn 3, river 2) he grabbed his cards back after they landed on the other cards and said "ITS A CHOP". The guy with AA (graciously) said "Ill agree with whatever the house says." "So will I," said the other guy. House ruled it a muck. "I WANT ANOTHER RULING." LOLOLOLOLOL. Another guy came in, gave same ruling. He refused the decision. The management said "Well, you can get up, but we are not cashing your chips, and you will be banned from here permanently." Guy finally let his chips go. AMAZINGLY IDIOTIC.

I always like to look left before I even check my hand. Usually at least one person looks and telegraphs out of turn. The most common three are the not interested folding (cards in pre muck position sometimes even arm is extended a little), only calling (glance at cards then fairly quickly grabbing the calling chips in hand or separated from stack to flick in, the important part is they are not spending any time between actions so only thinking about calling), or the pretend not interested folding that’s way too stiff and fake waiting to raise (just like the folding, but porn grade acting. Sometimes the real folder doesn’t know who it’s on, this guy keeps looking back at the action.). One of the funniest things I can remember is looking left to see old man coffee holding a bunch of raising chips and shaking (the let’s not see a flop 10x opener handful type).

One day, he hammers into me and I say "Do you want to check it down" and he refused, and I thought "Ok, Ill stop doing it too." Next day he checks like were going to check it down so I bluff shove on him and he gets pissed off. DO NOT CHECK IT DOWN EVER. Another guy always always always wanted a check down when he was on a draw, but NEVER checked down when he had it....JUST PLAIN SCUM. And yes there are lots of people who will fire the river.
