5 London Pubs with Christmas Names

London is famous for its many pubs, all of which have a tale or two to tell...and in this video we'll be exploring a collection of them which, with a little imagination, all have names related to Christmas.
On our tour, we'll be visiting pubs in Hampstead, Peckham, Clerkenwell, Southwark, Bow and Chelsea, and discovering stories of war, rowdy East End fairs, the invention of Christmas crackers and a pub once named after a long vanished London railway station.

Well, that was very nostalgic and got me deep in the feels there. I was married back when the Holly Bush was my local. I’m no longer married and live in Dulwich now. I hope you didn’t visit all these hostelries in one night. Another fascinating, fact packed and festively themed perambulation around some of London’s quirky pubs. Thank you for a whole year of similarly interesting videos. I truly admire your research and enthusiasm. The very first printed Christmas card was designed in 1843 for Sir Henry Cole by an ancestor of mine, the painter John Callcott Horsley. Cole used a number of the cards for himself (1000 had been printed and hand coloured), he then sold the rest for one shilling each under the pseudonym Felix Summerly.

Romney would not recognise that house in Hampstead today as it was extensively redesigned in the 1930s by Clough Williams-Ellis (the celebrated architect of Portmeirion) who bought it in 1929. A great episode! Also this is why I can't invite you to review where I live now. NW Arkansas has been in an economic boom since 1980 and people came here because the land was dirt cheap. "Here we have a restaurant that has existed for almost a decade. With a rich history of... well they serve very nice Thai food here. Let's move on to this artisan brewery which has been here for almost two decades!"

An excellent video! Another literary connection to The Surprise is that HMS Surprise is the ship featured most often in Patrick O'Brian's series of naval novels, the inspiration for the excellent Russell Crowe film "Master And Commander:The Far Side Of The World".

Excellent as always Rob ! I was in london with my mum very recently and had a bit of a pub tour ourselves...the swan became our local in hammersmith as we was staying 5mins away..the prince william near durey lane if I recall correctly...the shakespeare in soho right on carnaby street...the nags head in covent garden and most famous of all..the 10 bells in whitechapel. Off all the nights to be in there it was oct 31st..halloween ! I bet all those pubs have a fair bit off london history between them. Sadly we never made it to find a nags head in peckham...I'm not sure one really exists there...

Merry Christmas, Rob. Pubs are a great antidote to loneliness, which is afflicting the western world. People should make a point of visiting a pub as a contribution to community life. A well sorted group of friends should not be so self-centred as to not say a few words of greeting to someone sitting by themselves.

@@ChrisSmith-ls7mb Just to chip in: I think it dates back to Roman times, when most people couldn't read they would put an ivy bush outside to indicate that a building housed a tavern or inn.

Sorry to be a bit pedantic here, but I'd just like to point out that Easter and Whitsun (or Pentecost) are two different festivals. One being about six weeks after the other if I remember correctly. (Nice work though. Thanks!)

Interesting, (well to me) is that when I was a child my Doctor moonlighted as an on-site doctor to The Ring Boxing Club. Interesting and ironic that the building built without corners to stop the devil having a place to hide was later filled with a Square Ring definitely does have corners
