Really enjoyed this one. I knew Shane Warne more as a personality (seeing him in interviews on TV shows and so on) but I have never really seen him play cricket. This was only 5 shots but they were awesome to witness. He seemed to have a spectacular bowling technique. Recommend me some other Shane Warne or cricket videos. Tell me what you thought about Shane in the comments. Thanks!

Shane is a right-hand leg spinner which is normally the duties of a left-hander. Shane was a great cricketer (one of the greatest), however always had self-discipline problems and his personal life was riddled with controversy.

Two greatest spin bowlers in history are Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitheran of Sri Lanka. When Australia and Sri Lanka play each other in Test Cricket, they play for the Warne-Muralitheran Trophy, which is a Bronze cast of both players hands gripping a ball. Magic indeed!

Shane Warne is like our ultimate spinner. He holds some of the greatest records when it comes to being a fantastic spinner of his time. He and Brett Lee (fast bowler) were the two bowlers of that day I looked up to the most. Them and Ricky Pointing (batter and well known captain of the Australian team) were my sporting idols in Australian cricketing.

The Ball of the Century or The Gatting Ball, which is no.1 here. It was Shane's first ball in test cricket against England, and his first delivery in an Ashes Series. The shape on the delivery with the drift, the dip, where it pitched, then the ripping turn and bounce. It has everything, a perfect ball. He hadn't even warmed up either. It usually takes a bit for the fingers to relax so the ball comes out right, let alone calm his nerves. It was the biggest ball to date for the young Warne's career, I mean, before he bowled it.

No. 1 was regarded as the bowl of the century. England V Australia is always a very intense competition. Warne came into bowl as a relative new and unknown player and had only played a few tests. Believe it or not the one we see was his first ever bowl against England in a test!!! First bowl bowled and he gets one of the best ever England batsmen and leaves him both amazed and embarrassed. A remarkable result and set him up to become regarded as the best bowler ever. A true legend.

Shane Warne was Special in so many ways. Obviously the greatest Leg Spinner of all time, but so much more. His knowledge of the theory, strategy and tactics of Cricket was pretty much second to none. When Shane Warne spoke about Cricket, especially technique, you could hear a pin drop, everyone would hang on his every word. So apart from his sporting prowess, he was a what we call a 'Top Bloke'. He was funny, kind, enthusiastic, willing to spend as much time with an 11 year old fan as we would with the celebrity superstars he hung around with. I mean, he was engaged to Liz Hurley, and he wasn't batting above his league. Everyone who knew him loved him. His Memorial service attracted a worldwide audience of 1 Billion people. The Great Southern Stand of the MCG was renamed The Shane Warne Stand. Upon his sad passing many, many people shared their memories of him. One that sticks in my mind is a lady who phoned a radio station and told the story of when she met Shane Warne. 15 years ago she was sitting in a coffee shop and Shane Warne came in; being a big Cricket fan she thought, why not say hello and ask for an autograph. They ended talking for over an hour, and he helped her gain some perspective on a life issue she was having. They remained friends, in regular contact up until his death. Many other people said they had close, warm, loving friendships with him. His Charity work was supreme. He was one of kind.

#1 is often referred to as "The Ball of the Century". It was Shane's first delivery in a Test Match in England, so normally you'd expect a few looseners before he really got into it. Yet Shane pitched just outside leg stump (the one the batsman is standing directly in front of) and the ball ripped back and took off stump (the opposite stump). You can see from his reaction that Mike Gatting (the batsman) had no idea what happened either.

the magic of leg spin bowling. one of the most important factors of Shane Warne, was his upper body strength, the thickness of his fingers, natural variation, and most importantly technique. As a young man watching Warne play, every wicket was always magic, something many of us young Aussies at the time wanted to emulate, he was basically the perfect leg spin bowler. such a simple technique, yet he could do so much. A good example of that, was in Adelaide when he turned the match on its head leading to a famous victory against England on the fifth day.

The King of Spin .. Warnie was a legend on and off the field, Still in shock that he is no longer with us. He had a bunch of different types of deliveries (there's a clip of that out there) as he did some bowling tutorials on YT to share his amazing knowledge and skill. He had and amazing tactical brain and understood the game like few others. It is an ongoing debate as to who was better, him or Muralitharan, Shane a leg-spinner (bowling on the leg side and pitching back to the stumps) while Muralitharan was an off-spinner (basically the opposite - pitching outside the bat and darting back the other way). Muralitharan got more career wickets (708 v. 800) ... but many say that Warnie's were against better opposition. Muralitharan was supported to a degree by the spin-friendly wickets of his home nation, Sri Lanka and overall has the better stats. Nonetheless, both men had great mutual respect for one another and immense admiration for each other's achievements.

The way the ball curves through the air is because of something called "the Magnus effect". An object spinning rapidly in an anti-clockwise sense creates a low pressure zone on the right hand side of the ball as it moves forward. A clockwise spin places the low pressure zone on the left hand side. With normal air pressure on one side and low air pressure on the other, the ball drifts toward the low pressure region. Shane Warne was a wrist spinner, there are many other wrist spinners that have played and still play. Yasir Shah, Adam Zampa and Adil Rashid are prominent modern wrist spin bowlers. Warne was unusual for the amount he was able to spin the ball while maintaining control. I'm not a typical Australian, I see Warne as having had a pretty big ego. He was quite unhappy he was not made Captain of the Australian Test team and had a bit of a feud with a couple of other players in the team as a result.

Warnie was what they call a leg spinner, the best of all time (in the world not just Australia). It’s all in the wrist with this style and there’s about 5 different variations he uses, the batsman often don’t know what’s coming. There are also off spinners and fast or pace bowlers. I’m no expert others can fill you in if you need more info! RIP Warnie.

yes it's referred to as wrist spin, but to generate big spin, it sort of starts from the ground up, in your rotation. The main point of contact with ball is the inside of the ring finger, which you flick up with the inertia. There is a movement of the wrist, and the three main deliveries are achieved by altering the angle of the wrist.

One aspect of the prodigious turn that you see there with these deliveries is his ability to find the bowlers footmarks (from the other end) if you know what I mean. That roughed up surface can allow allot more purchase/turn than the rest of the rolled pitch.... A masterclass in this technique, try doing it!

How did Warnie do it? He spun the ball damn hard and had perfect control of it. The movement inwards through the air occurs because the spin that is imparted on the ball makes one side of the ball have a higher pressure than the other side, which makes it swerve towards the batsman's legs. Once it bounces the ball will always move towards the direction it is spun in. I.M.O having bowled leg spin myself, the movement in the air and control was the most amazing part. He could drift it just enough and land it just in the right spot to spin and hit off stump. Absolute genius!

The fun thing is that the second last one was the first ball he bowled in a test in England & against England. From that point he tormented England and even when he wasn’t playing that well He was still inside their head. They were spooked. He was a best spinner we’ve had, that’s saying something considering the likes of O’Reilly, Benaud & Lyon. The only player who could be considered better would a batsman: Bradman. Kudos to Ponting & Chappell (Greg)… The only bowler who could considered to be put on the same level as Warne is fast bowler Dennis Lillie.

Re: Warne being the best. As an Aussie I can confirm we revere Warney as a player. If you talk to fans on the sub continent you may hear the name Murali and he did end up taking more wickets than Warne. But factor in the fact like 65% of those were against Bangladesh or Sri Lanka on wickets that favoured spinners. Warne was able to take wickets around the world regardless of conditions or circumstance; matter of fact it seemed as though the bigger the occasion the better Warne was. The wicket he took against Gibbs (number 4) is seen as the catalyst for Australia winning that world cup. He almost singlehandedly won the legendary 2005 Ashes series. He was the best to ever do it and was taken far too soon.

Yeah was going to say that, these weren't low order batsmen these were some of the best in the world at the time. The camera foreshortens the length of the pitch as well, it is 22yrs long, bowling/throwing a heavy ball the best part of 18-20 yrds with enough spin for it to bounce at that amount of angle is ridiculous.
@MrDanbarbs
@MrDanbarbs Жыл бұрын
Adding to how awesome his standard leg break deliveries were, he also invented deliveries that you’d swear were not possible until you saw him do it. Imagine seeing out a series of ridiculous leg breaks only for the next one to spin in the OPPOSITE direction with seemingly the same wrist movement (the ‘wrongun’), and then the one after that slid straight with seemingly no bounce (the ‘flipper’) due to insane top spin
@yoluko4750

Warne is the King of Spin. His 600 odd wickets make him the highest Aussie wicket taker of all time, and number 2 in the world. His style of bowling is called leg spin, where the ball is spun in the air to turn when they bounce. For leg spin it is right to left (so on a right handed batter’s leg side). There is also off spin, which turns left to right, so bounces on the side the batter is holding the bat (called the off side, which has no relation to that term in soccer!) There is also pace bowling, which is all about speed. Pa e bowlers can also get the ball to move sideways in the air, known as swing bowling.
@GethStar
@GethStar 5 ай бұрын
It was how he used his fingers and wrist to deliver spin on the ball in different directions (mainly from right to left, but he could bowl spin left to right, spin straight on or get back spin on the ball) He used the seam to grip various bits on the wicket like scuffs, cracks, grass tufts in order to deceive the batsmen with bonce, spin and flight speed.

Before that ball, leg spin bowling was a lost art, a piece of cricket's past that only the odd player perpetuated. Shane Warne is the greatest leg spin bowler of all time. There can be whole debates on if he’s the greatest spinner/bowler etc. I loved watching him in the 2005 Ashes which England won but he virtually kept Australia in with his exceptional skill. What these clips don’t show is the genius of how he set up and manipulated batters. Getting into their heads, moving his fielders etc etc
@timjones9727

The “defying the laws of physics” is actually following the laws of physics. The spin he imparted with the ball going right to left (or leg to off in cricket speak) will always cause the drift you saw where the ball naturally drifts the other way from the rotation placed on it. The skill of very good spin bowlers is the ability to “rip” the ball hard enough that it does this causing batters to get caught following the ball only for it to land and spin back in the opposite direction. The England off spin bowler Graeme Swann (turned it left to right or off to leg) was excellent at getting drift onto the ball and having players playing the wrong shot. But Warne was a total master of his craft. The other thing about legspin bowling is that it’s the most complex form of bowling as the spin is imparted from turning the wrist. Getting wrist position perfect is amazingly difficult to stop you bowling bad balls and gifting batters runs. Shane Warne had incredible control and mastery that few can ever match. A total legend and the cricketing world is a gloomier place without him around.
@neilwood5767

Its moved in the air because the spin on the ball creates low pressure on one side of the ball, it’s called the Magnus effect. Then he tries to land it in the foot marks created by the fast bowlers as it grips more.

because shane warne could impart so many revolutions on the ball, it drifts alot in the air which is why you see it move in the air from left to right (opposite to the way he spins it (wrongun not included)), he is able to make it hoop thrugh a mix of pace, release point etc. combining all that you get something magical to watch and dificult to play.

It’s not swerving in the air before it hits the ground, he rolls it out of his hand when he bowls so that the ball is spinning towards 10 o’clock (if the batters wicket is 12 o’clock) So it’s spinning in that direction as he lobs the ball just to the right of the batsman (2 o’clock) Then when it hits the pitch at good length ( bit more than three quarters of the way to the batsman) The spin grabs the ground on contact and shoots back towards 10 o’clock) So not only do you have to have an incredible mastery of the spin bowling technique (by far the most difficult of the bowling styles) When you get that perfect amount of spin you have to place that spinning ball in a very precise spot…

Legspin is an artform pretty much. What you don't see in this video is how he at times sets the batsmen up with certain deliverys to then get them out with a different type of ball. You will hear the ball spinning like a top as it comes down the pitch when you're the batsmen. Warnie is the best I've seen play but there are also some players that played in the 1920s and 1930s that I think are of the same calibre of bowler as Warne was. Legspin is an art of deception that can make the best batsmen in the world look stupid when done right. His tutorial videos are well worth watching.

That is brilliant information, thanks very much. Nice to get a better insight into the technique and I love how you described being able to hear the ball spinning. I would never have knew that. Can't wait to watch more of his stuff

@@MertAus bowled legspin when I played cricket so I have an idea of how hard it can be to get it right. Accuracy in landing the ball is one of the harder aspects of legspin. The Afghanistan player rashid khan would be worth looking at as well he's probably one of the better players going around at the minute. Depends a lot on the type of bowler you are as well some legspin bowlers have certain types of balls that they bowl better then others. For example all his delivery in that video were standard legspin balls which drift in towards the legs then spin to the offside. A wrong un will come from the back of the hand and do the complete opposite. Also has other delivery options like the flipper that comes out the front of the hand and can either bounce high or low or just skid quickly on Depending on natural variation of the pitch and also how its delivered. All are disguised to some extent to look like the same ball when released. Literally like a magician with a big box of tricks. Abdul quadir from Pakistan was a bowler who used his wrong un ball a lot because batsmen had trouble picking it and it would spin sharply .he had no problems spinning it 2 feet or more past batsmen to hit there stumps etc.

Warne is the greatest spin bowler ever. Being a batter facing Warne would be like a goalkeeper, the ball looks like it's going out nowhere near the net and it's too late to move and it curves late into the top corner. Except you know he is going to do it every time. But sometimes he does it and it goes straight, and very occasionally one skids through low

One thing that people don't appreciate about spin bowlers like Warney is the speed at which they bowl. Although the turn is impressive, it's quite easy to handle of it's super slow. But when that's done at 50/60mph. That's IMPOSSIBLE to play!!! Are you Welsh btw?

2:27 No, Mat, it's not a common thing at all: Welcome to the magical world of Warney, the greatest leg spinner and perhaps greatest bowler of all time. I love my cricket, but there are no words to describe how good it was watching him bowl. To say I loved it doesn't even come close.

OK Mat, so Warnie was "The King of Spin". He worked in tandem with Glenn McGrath [fast bowler - deadly accurate] at the opposite end. McGrath wouldn't let a batsman score, when a spinner comes on the batsman know they can get a few "loose" balls and get some runs............Shane would allow that knowing he could lull them into a false sense of security then WHAM! Here is him explaining exactly how to perform 5 of his leg spin variants. He shows exactly how it is done, but of course it all comes down to dedication and practice : kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6qriWp9qNeAotE

Like you can spin a table tennis ball a lot more than that. Cricket ball is harder to judge, depending on whether it hits the seam or not, uneveness of the ground, one side of the ball will be kept shiny, so it doesnt travel straight through the air. You really need to get to the pitch of the ball, if thats not possible, get back and hit it after its bounced and has rissen a bit

Hey Matt, this is an excellent summary of the various techniques used by Shane. He was a Leg Spinner (so basically spinning the ball from right to left) but there are so many variations of this simple premise which makes it fascinating to watch the battle between bowler and batsman kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGLUoYmKjs6Zaa8

Nice one David, thanks very much. Will check it out. That makes sense about the 'leg spinner' as that is right that is seemed like ball bounced from right to left in all these clips. I am in awe of the amount of spin he was able to generate.

If you really want to understand how good Warnie was, put it this way.... Leg spin bowling was regarded as a bit of a joke before Warnie came along. Leg spinners had very little control or consistency. When he flashed on the scene millions of kids around the world took up leg spin bowling in the hope to emulate him and the experts told us that in a few years all teams would now have great leggies in their team. It's 30 years since Warnie debuted and nobody has come even vaguely close to taking up his mantle.

And to think cricket wasn't his chosen sport in his youth! Warnie had he's sights set on becoming an Aussie Rules footballer with St Kilda. Luckily for the cricketing world, he just wasn't up to scratch to make a real career out of it. It has been said by many ex players (both Australian and opposition) that the spin rotation Warnie used to get with his bowling, created a 'fizzing' sound. The ball's rotation could be heard by the ones closest to the pitch. Just imagine hearing that as the ball comes at you..
