As a child in the 1980's, I asked my parents to play this album and QE2 on constant repeat during road trips. They didn't complain, at least it wasn't kids music. Now in my 40's, I still listen to Mike Oldfield albums on KZbin, while working from home.

My best friend in highschool scored this album at a WaxTracks record store the year it came out and we spent the rest of the next few years getting our hands on every Oldfield album we could. This was and still is a totally unique musical style and I've always been so blown away that he essentially created all his music by himself. I've always been a huge fan of his 'strange language' tunes with the made up words (like at 16:45 here), there's another great one of those on the album QE2. Huge props to Mike for helping shape my musical sensibilities. So great to hear this album again after 30 years or so.

I was gonna say Return To Ommadawn recently came out but it's like 6 years already!!!! There's a guy called Robert Reed who did 3 Oldfield inspired albums. Thery're great but the 2nd one "Sanctuary 2" is awesome and sounds like a lost Oldfield album. If you need a fix I wholeheartedly recommend it.
@ianferguson3455 Жыл бұрын
@@GregBreden I haven’t actually listened to much of Robert’s work. Don’t get me wrong I feel sure he is a great artist. I discovered Oldfield in 1979 and in 2023 I’m still enthralled by his work. As we all now officially know he is retired and I’m fine with that, he deserves it. I will make a point of listening to some of Robert’s work but for me it’s weird I feel like I’m cast in an Oldfield mould and that for me is irreplaceable and a precious not to be broken thing. In my opinion his whole life and how he came to fame is so unique and with Tubular Bells being the hit that it was, for me there can only be one Mike Oldfield.
@GregBreden Жыл бұрын
@@ianferguson3455 Not weird at all. I totally agree and I feel the same. There's a couple of people who come close (also Colin Masson) but there's something not quite there. If I think of Incantations I know it's the singular magic that a special artist has.
@ianferguson3455 Жыл бұрын
@@GregBreden I’m a great admirer of people who simply re create Mikes music and I would love to see tubular tribute with Ruben Alvarez up front. He has Mikes playing technique fully mapped imho. People like that who will carry on Mikes music live are invaluable. It is very hard for artists like Robert Reed I think in todays musical environment to find a place so to speak. It will never be ground breaking music cause Oldfield had already done it with Tubular Bells and at a time when music like that just wasn’t about so much. So he created his own style and the rest is history.
