5 Minutes in a Blown Gas Flat Bottom

Mike Chadwick takes us for a ride in his 1978 Hondo Blown Gas Flat Bottom (5/8 Runner Bottom), named "Ricky Bobby BGF". He has two of these boats with the same paint job, but with slightly different setups. This particular boat runs a1300 horsepower 540ci big block Dart with a 12-71 Mooneyham blower running 116 octane race fuel.
Mike races his boats in the NJBA and ADBA Drag Boat Racing series and I always love shooting him as he's not afraid to stomp the throttle and put some air between him and the water, as you'll see near the end of this video.
Since this wasn't an official event, I didn't shoot it for any magazines. I just went to see my friends, and watch some badass boats make some hot passes. Thanks to Mike for letting me slap a GoPro Camera on the boat.

No one realizes the amount of time it takes to set up a runner bottom to run like that. Well done. Biggest regret was selling my runner. Made mistake of giving my exwife a ride and airing it out a bit. Lol

Lake Elsinore is the only public lake I know of in CA that has an unlimited speed limit down the center and noise doesn't seem to be a problem either. Great place to water ski once you get used to the green water

Last time I checked it did.. it's 150mph mon-thur down the middle between the aerators. HSZ (high speed zone) and the lake is directional, like Nascar.

Mine runs a little more HP than this boat WITHOUT the blower. I just got mine off the dyno and will add the 14-71 Blower, Nitrous, Fuel Injection and racing gas. I have about the same drag boat, but I don't understand why you need a blower to get 1,300 hp? Nice boat though

As cool as it is, there are some boats like that used as a race only boat, how frustrating to have all that motor, AND $$$ in an unusable hull…Great a 3 second burst and out of it! That water is glassy calm! My 19’ STV EURO and 270 hp merc promax flies over light river chop,at 50 to 75 +, costs a fraction of that thing to buy own n operate and tops out well over 115 and easily cruises at car speeds. I hope this guy has more than one boat, I like speed too but seems that boat would just be a tease!
