I was an avid hunter living in southern Maine , I grew up in Maine and New Hampshire and I couldn't believe it when I got lost for about three hours while hunting behind my house . I didn't bring a compass and the sky was completely overcast . There is a brook behind the house but , it twists and turns so much that it would probably take a full day or so to follow it out . A road passed in front of my house and another road approximately 3/4 to 1 mile in back that ran parallel to the one in front of my house , which is why I never imagined I could get lost there , but I definitely did . I would never go in the woods no matter how small without a compass since that day .

for those whove never hiked in the area, allow me to give you some context on inchworm's hike immediately before she got off the trail and got lost. from poplar ridge, there is a long descent straight down the side of the mountain. it ends at an old railroad grade. it is a wide clearing in the middle of the forest that from the spot where the trail crosses seems to go on for a long way in both directions. geraldine crossed this grade and then began a more gentle climb. somewhere along this climb, she leaves the trail and got lost. had she had just gone back down hill, she would have come back to the large clear railroad grade, and then back to the AT, but rather than do that, she started sending text messages to her husband. when they didnt go through, she decided the prudent course of action was to climb higher in an attempt to get cell service.

That hiker geraldine, the moment she realized that she had been turned around and she was lost she should have stayed put, pitched camp, and made a fire... and one that would allow people to see the fire by using wet wood. And another thing a hiker should always carry is a storm whistle around their neck!! you can hear that sucker super loudly and that's what Coast Guards use in the middle of the ocean and they're able to hear them for miles! so, take a storm whistle with you and put it and keep it around your neck at all times during hiking , also a headlamp and not just any stinking headlamp but a superior headlamp that lights up the whole neighborhood and have an extra battery with you , a machete, a really good shovel, waterproof tarp and plenty of fire gel just in case conditions are too wet... that fire gel will work beautifully in those conditions and if you can afford it... always carry yourself a good satellite radio and make sure it's charged. If you're lost use that whistle every minute someone is going to hear you

Untamed, I’m on KZbin most of days because I’m bedridden. So I see a lot of these stories from the beginning and you are not giving the right information. If you can’t stop.

People underestimate how easy it is for inexperienced people to get lost in the woods. They also underestimate how dangerous nightfall is in the woods, at night you cannot see anything, not even your hand right in front of your face. Always have a compass, always have marking tape, always have waterproof matches, always have a firestarter, always have a compass and if possible a paper map. And NEVER forget your water purification tablets.

You need to check you information, I seen this when it happened, she went off the trail she set up her tent and her ankle was sprained she layer there waiting for rescue someone say they checked that area but didn’t. The husband contacted the police on the first day she didn’t arrive for her supplies. Shame on you for telling such crap.

First off what do people find in hiking???
@MontanaVigilanteExplorer5 ай бұрын
Man, if you have to ask that question then there's no clear answer but pity. Unless, of course, you're a city person. Try it sometime. Nature is much more epic and wonderful than any sidewalk or wherever you're spending your days on Earth.
These are all sad. I don't know when 'personal locator beacons' became a thing but I firmly believe that a law be passed that every hiker, whether a day hike or a month+, every hiker be required to purchase it and carry it with them. Just think of the hundreds of lives that would be saved every year.

Government intrusion is a big problem in this country and they can stay away.
@shanejohnson80248 ай бұрын
@@dinahbrown902unless you are not paying taxes, you are paying government workers to go out and try to find these people via a lot of man hours. Maybe don't be so quick to judge this emergency beacon idea, which could potentially impact you financially.
