I've had a few injuries over the years that have hindered my training, but the one that keeps haunting me is the dumbest one: I stepped poorly once when drilling and sprained my ankle, had to recover for two months after that, then had the same thing happen a year later during sparring but luckily not as severe, and now just today I cracked it a bit again when I went for a run. It had been fine for two years and I figured it had recovered its strength, but nope, still very susceptible to injury.

Points 4 and 5 are big issues I see so many people forget. As a doctor I talk to many people with back, shoulder, and knee pains. The majority recover with basic stability exercises, working those small muscles in addition to the big moves. As for stretching, studies have shown that cold stretching before exercise increases the risk of injury, but warming up a bit before stretching reduces the risk of injury. Stretching at the end has also shown significant improvement in recovery. I would absolutely recommend basic yoga as a great addition to any exercise routine, not because yoga is magical but because it emphasizes flexibility and stability.

Thank you for the cuts advice. I get damage on my forearms from punching and I always just ignore it. Stretching is definitely slept on. A stretch post workout has helped me feel fresh and not tight after training and the next day. You are a great martial arts mentor. Thank you

You are so right about the physio. It is really important to do those exercises consistently. Also, people should be doing preventative exercises to protect and strengthen their knee and shoulder joints (rotator cuff), as these are the most vulnerable joints in combat sports.

@@cyberjayhd7051 For the knee, doing long rounds of the horse stance, done correctly. Another is obviously strengthening them with PT exercise, like squats on a bosu, the exercise Gabriel mentioned, etc. Lastly specifically train the glutes as they control rotation of the femur, and have strong core and pelvic floor to cinch your legs and hips together. There are some specific martial exercises from Silat that strengthen the various joins of the body, as joints are a major target in Silat. It would be too much to tell here.

unironically showering and washing your body too much might be detrimental to your immune system and thus actually slightly increase risk of getting conditions like cellulitis, contrary to what you think. Because daily you are exposed to bacteria that will keep your immune system active and functional. Not that there is any way of knowing if it would have even helped in your case, but showering 2 times a day could by many actually be considered "too much"

Partial achilles rupture, wasnt painful when it happened (apparantly its like 50/50 if you feel pain or not instantly) Continued to kick and spar etc (the same day) Thought i might just strained my foot, until i called my physio and said i might have strained my ankle, he told me to try and do a calf raise, thats when i noticed something was incredibly wrong lol, he had to call me in asap for utlrasound to see if it was a full rupture or a partial since apparantly they are very similar in symptoms. Luckily partial, relatively recovered now 4 months later with no pain when kicking/single calf raises etc. Im a heavy guy (130kg) but also tall, but might have been my sudden start to training and ramping up too fast (yay adhd) Also might have sunken in on the gym mat slightly due to my weight on the kick that may have caused a sudden stop during the movement. Worst injury i had, do your calf raises people

Once i come back to training and try do sayyyy 80 push ups 20x4 to keep up with the usual level of my class. I get wiped out and cant sleep that night from overheating and irritable dreams. Sprained my right hand's thumb MCP joint a couple of months ago by throwing a hook in boxing sparring and my partner slipping close inside, smashing my thumb into the back of his head instead of hitting with the front of the glove. Doesn't take much to re-sprain the thumb at the moment, making it really sensitive to impacts and it takes days for the joint to stop being sore which makes a lot of training sessions a pain in the butt to complete. On one hand I know it should be given some rest to heal but on the other hand, I don't feel like I can just stop training to do so. Been training regularly since it happened and I seem to keep re-injuring myself which is probably kind of dumb. 4-6 weeks without punching stuff is a looooong time though. xD

I've done my thumb quite a few times going for body shots and clipping an elbow, such an annoying pain when you can't close your fist properly. I've found just shoving the hand into an ice bowl for as long as possible increases recovery massively

@kristianjensen5877 7 ай бұрын
@@louisbarnes7691Good point with the ice water treatment. It should at least help with the swelling of the joint in the short term, possibly also crack down on inflammation. I find using a pseudo "Ippon-ken" grip inside a boxing glove helps a little to mitigate the risk of direct impacts to the thumb but it fels pretty awkward at the same time.

For me, stretching before a workout makes me more injury prone. I would throw the arms and legs around to get warm and ready for movement. But fully really stretching makes the muscles weaker and easier to injure. The gym I train it has a warm up, sadly its way too long and more like a seperate workout.

Training for a high level of fitness can suppress the immune system, making you much more susceptible to infections like cellulitis . Have you talked to fitness / immunity professionals to see what they recommend to reduce the impact of this?

There have been no proven benefits from stretching after a workout. I've trained boxing for 20 years and MT for 15, and i stretched diligently after every workout, but as soon as i cooled down a couple of hours later, i was stiff as a board. I saw no benefits in either flexibility or the ability to recover. Once i stopped stretching after a workout and only before ( and 15-20 minutes at that) my flexibility was far greater, both the next day and the same day after i cooled down. You're doing muscle fiber damage while training and heal/adapt when you eat and rest, and stretching after the workout is just added stress to the tissue, it doesn't help with recovery in any way.

I agree with that, and also what i have found that i wanted to improve my high kicks and i had been doing that drills every day to kick Higher, and my groin was very painful. My conclusion is you have to recover, with everything also with streching, mobility etc.

I do not believe that is a worry - possibly if someone has an issue with thin enamel on their teeth to begin with ,then that may exasperate it, but I am years past becoming a senior citizen, am a guy who has worked out and trained 6 days a week for the past 60 plus years, and brushed his teeth numerous times a day since being a kid - 5-6 times a day. I have never had a cavity, a filling, or any dental issues, and according to the dentist, my teeth are still in excellent shape. That is just what I have been told by my dentist over the years.
