Amazing video. I need to definitely prioritize my grips and and learn to get my hips in the right place like you always manage to do. Usually when i over commit and over extend, it's a wrap and in trapped in something. The bigger guys I roll with have many years under their belt and always seem to be a few steps ahead of me. I usually never get any offense off... rather I'm defending my ass off.

So I was 312lbs when I started BJJ. I carried it *VERY* well, was inhumanly strong and had an incredible gas tank. The problem with rolling at this weight is literally all of the techniques need mild to moderate modification to account for your size, and that’s both attacking and being attacked. Another issue, and truthfully the biggest issue, is no matter how good your gas tank is, you require so much oxygen to feed those muscles buried under your fat, and your muscles are working to carry all that fat too. It’s great if you can stay on top but once you end up on your back it’s hellish. I’m 251lbs now and I’m in the gym three times a week. Being strong and lean is *LITERAL LEAGUES* better than being strong and fat for BJJ.

I'm with you. I started BJJ at nearly 350 # and I'm currently down to about 280 # give or take 5#. I'm 6'4" and never had much of a gut, but it's a lot better now than then. I'm at the gym 4-6 days a week. If your core and flexibility is decent, being on your back isn't that bad even if you're nearly 300 #. I'm the heaviest person in the gym and one of the most flexible as well, which shocks nearly everyone. Reflexes are a little different to sustained speed, and mine are fairly fast...though there are limits. I've seen openings before I simply couldn't exploit because I couldn't get there in time because I'm limited by the geometry of my build. My core isn't quite where I want it but it's way better than it once was, and my cardio is improving as well. I can still do the splits, and I go all the way to the ground for a lot of the warmup stretches, and it still amazes some people. Pick up a weight, I'm the strongest in my gym, but there's so much more to it than that. I can do real pushups now but I still do mostly knee ones because I can't keep up with the cadence otherwise. My technical standup is just kind of weak and I can't do some of the agility stuff we run through. I can do way more than you think, but there are still limits. I'm the slowest runner of all of us; even if my knees were better I probably would still be nearly this slow. Jiu jitsu wise I'm probably not the strongest, though my grip has improved and the effectiveness of my grips has improved as well over the last almost 2 years. Anyways, you have some moments like when the second-heaviest guy could lock closed guard around me for the first time...definitely a mixed blessing because my waist is smaller now than it once was and so maybe not as easy to try to pass guard against some people, but I'll definitely take it. Definitely a mixed blessing; people still don't want to roll against you sometimes or you'll just maybe work positions or whatever with some others if the size disparity is too much, and of course finding gear is only just now being a bit easier than it once was.
