Was just about to pull the trigger button on the stratosphere. Will hold fire untill I've watched you experience with it. I was desperate for the Inov8 Roclite boot, but cant wear them due to a plate in my ankle. My mate wears them and swears by them. Have you tried a waterproof Kilt? I used mine on my high peak hike video and gotta say, it kept me dry from rain and stopped me from sweating through. You can see it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4uznIyVadCGaNk at 15min 30sec. I've just switched from the Sawyer mini to the Katadyn for hiking, the flow rate is much better. Will still be using the Sawyer Mini/Water bladder combo for more static camps

I mean there’s the possibility I could’ve just had a faulty stratosphere, but aye im just going to stay away from that one in the future haha. Those Inov8’s look decent! Also great shout with the waterproof Kilt, I’ll check out your video. That could be a future purchase. Sawyer mini does the job for me, but that katadyn keeps popping up. Appreciate the tips man

Brilliant video mate - doing the hike in 2 weeks and this has really helped on a couple of points that I was concerned about - i.e. poncho or no poncho/ how much food to bring/ bringing a water filter. Btw can highly recommend the Altra Lone Peak 7's for your next hike - absolutely astonishing comfort, quick-drying and not a single blister!

Like it! BTW me using a poncho plus your army wet weather trousers, paclite, ok, camouflage, but light and cheap with zippers to get them on easily. Very useful also when it is getting a bit colder....

Your boots are light weight? I spent years in Lowa GTX combat boots, yes they are heavy but they keep your feet dry toasty & your ankles well protected from injury on rough terrain.

@@DazzyOutdoors There is that I guess. Not a criticism but I noticed on your video while you were walking your boots didn't look well laced up or very waxed up, both would go & long way to help you with waterproofing & comfort. Just my 2 pence. Glad you are OK & training hard for the next adventure. Just sat watching Swedwoods 3 days solo wild camp & hike. It's got me itching for a tramp now. Laters dude.

Hey, Daz, you might also like to consider carrying Hi5 powder pouches. These will give you lots of energy as well as providing you something flavoursome to drink during your hikes rather than just sipping water. They don't weigh much but will give you a lot of slow-release energy. You may be able to order them from Wiggle or Planet-X. They're rocket fuel for cyclists.

Hey, glad you back safe. Regarding the shoes, gore tex holds water, trail runners are like a swimming pool tied on your feet. But if you stay on the path and dont carry heavy. Thats 15-20 kg in my mind, its ok. But i would never give up my high rise hiking boots, for any other shoe. They are kevlar renenforced, leather breathable, goretex level water resistant, for stabilety and safty from spraining ankel or slipping on wet or uneven surfus. They dry fast, if wet. And come with a warranty. Spraing a ankel, missing a step or slipping is one of my biggest fears when alone, and in the mountains even more sow. But hey, i over practice over coustion. I do bring along crocs, for chilling around camp, i aint a masocist :) They work well for biking, wading while flyfishing and being a lazy peon :D Best of luck, lots of love. Try Altra lone peaks for trail runners. They have an open toebox and are zero drop. Which means that the heel side is not raised up. Do not use the Sawyer mini. It sucks. Use regular Sawyer squeeze.

Enjoyed this video, thanks. About boots vs trail runners I've been seeing the recommendation to ditch the boots from KZbinrs and I'm open minded about it but just saying that when I did the WHW and Ben Nevis last May I was glad of my boots (cheap and comfy Quechua MH100 Mid) against the relentless hard rocks of the Old Military Road which can be really punishing. (I got decent socks though, just as important). No major river crossings to do and dried them out in the drying room at campsite in Kinlochleven after getting hammered by a storm in Glencoe. No blisters after 100+ miles. I agree about the poncho..I thought I was being clever using one but gale force winds and rain made light work of it and my rain kilt.. useless... I got soaked :-) Like you said, should've tried the combo out before going!

Hey thanks for your comment! I’ve tried out some trail runners since making this video but they didn’t fit great so I returned them. So I’m back to the boots for now. You’re right though if committing to some trail runners there’s going to be some cons I’d also have to consider. I can imagine in the future I’ll end up settling for something in-between, like a lightweight boot. Atb

Thanks for sharing mate, I got a hike planned for Oct, no where near what you've done, but there's some good tips there. Glad you mentioned your running shoes, that thought crossed my mind, so think I'll try it out! Anyway, looking for to see your next adventure!

Loving your vids, WHW was very informative. I'm in the process of getting ready to do LEJOG next year which incorporates the WHW and the suggestion of trail runners is one to look at. I have two pairs of karrimor which are good for long walks over all types of terrain, pair them with some merino wool socks and you're on to a winner. I've only done a bit of the south west coast path with an overnight wild camp, learnt a bit just from that - like you say all learning experience ready for the next adventure :)

Well, you have definitely 'unsold' me on the Snugpak BIVI. I wonder if you just got a faulty one. The only part I can't be sure about is your choice of footwear. I need ankle support and prefer to try and keep my feet dry if possible and hence I'm seeking a lightweight pair of hi-leg boots. Were you happy with your recording gear too?
@DazzyOutdoors
@DazzyOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
It is possible I did just get a faulty one, either way I think I’ll still just look for something else. Yeah it’s that pros n cons game again, on difficult terrain hikes I’ll probably go back to the boots, they’re definitely the safer option. I just had the GoPro 10 with me, but yeah I think it’s ideal for these types of trips. Waterproof lightweight and durable

Not all summer bags are created equal Daz. I use the snugpak tactical 2 and though a summer bag, is rated comfort at zero degrees with a -5 limit. I used it in Scotland in March and it was great. If you think of a summer bag made for high altitude and you need the better performance. Same weight as yours too and not down.
