5 month old barred rock chickens

I feed them some sunflower seeds, corn, and grains, along with a generic commercial feed if they need it, but mostly they forage. I have large compost and wood chip piles for them to scratch in for bugs, and they chase down lizards as well. I have a garden and they get all the leftover vegetables, and I also have banana, mango, fig, coconut, and various other fruit trees that they get a lot of. A very wide range diet, but they're very healthy.

I have 7 4month old rocks and 2 started laying, I feed them venison and cooked noodles along with the normal crumb grower feed and scratch grains. They love red meat the most.

I have 11 new barred rocks chicks, not sure how many are males yet. I read that the males are lighter feathered. There's a few maybe 3 that looks lighter but not sure. Guess I'll need to wait a little longer, they are looking very good.

I can’t tell if the kids me I have crowing is male or female. We believe she’s a she😂 she’s huge! Everything we read says that the hens get large before the males, makes sense, but she’s now crowing??? I’ve read and heard that the hens crow doing head count and letting you know everyone is fine and here that Roos crow when eggs are layer in the am and evening. The 3 i belive are Roos are small, they let the girls push em around but they stand their ground if that makes sense? Idk I guess I have to wait until mid Dec to see who’s gonna sit on a egg🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

If there is more than 10 hens per Roo, they usually are too “busy” to bother fighting over girls. And these are Barred Rocks, the gentle type of Roo.

I don't let them run around the yard freely until they're large. When they're just hatched I have a portable enclosure that they stay in.

Most domesticated dogs somehow learn very quickly that chickens are off-limits and often interact with them quite well (terriers may occasionally chase them but it’s just sport). Dogs are really good at observing their masters’ interactions with other animals and learning what other species are ‘friends’. Cats won’t usually go for them either, not even the chicks.

Depends on their personality, but for the sake of the hens, I would only keep one. I have 43 hens so I can keep 2 roosters.

Yeah they really were 5 months. That's about the normal Barred Rock growth rate. Mine forage in the yard for insects so they get extra protein. I also feed them Black soldier Fly larvae if they need more protein. They have generic chicken feed from a nearby feed store to supplement their diet as well.
