My chickens love being out in the rain because the worm hunting is easy. The baby chickens get a back porch to explore. Chip is a Bielefelder.

Over time, the eggs that mine lay are just a bonus. They make every penny spent in feed as such up with the smiles they get out of me. I just got 7 new chicks among them a couple of Brahmas. I'll pick up a Brahma rooster in a couple of month as well to add to the flock. My dogs keep the birds of pray away. As soon as they see of hear one, they are out in the yard running it off the property. If one ever land, they would tear it up in short order. Thank you for the update.

I just got my first flock of chickens, and they are two weeks old right now. Two of them are barred rock. They are both so curious & the first to try flying out of the brooder. I have two roosters. I decided to get welsummer roosters because I heard they are friendly. So we’ll see. I wanted to make sure we had a friendly rooster because I have two young children & we are new to chickens. So far the welsummer chicks (both male & females) are also super sweet & very friendly. They come up to us right away like the barred rocks do. They are also very curious like the barred rocks too. The welsummers are my sons favorite so far. They look like little chipmunks with the markings on their backs lol. Thanks for sharing your video! Love your set up too!

I'm starting my very first flock. 16 barred rocks and 4 Rhode island reds. The barreds are SO busy. I love watching them zoom fly across the coop. Today I had to shoo one of the divider at the access door ( like yours) little snot is way to small to be going outside and I don't move fast enough to catch them without an enclosure. Mine are smaller than yours. I enjoyed your video.

That is some really nice camera quality, wow! Mine also go out in the rain for worms. One of my chickens is volunteered to be my digging assistant. She gets excited if she sees me in the yard carrying my shovel and is right there with me scratching and looking over the dirt clods for goodies. When we edge the flower beds they hunt for cutworms.

Too funny! I've got 2 barred rocks and they're maniacs-- blood-thirsty maniacs!. Always outgoing and curious, but they found some bug bites on my legs and are treating me like a blood dispenser! Ouch! Chip is going to be one gorgeous rooster! And I think they can get up to 12 lbs?

Got 12 chicks. Only one rooster in batch. Had to seperate from flock at 4 days old. Was attacking eyes of rest of chicks. Not just a peck but would go out of its way to attack, grip it by the eye, and hold it down.

I have 2 barred rocks and a RI Red - looks just like yours! I'm a first-timer chicken mama and also first-time snow country resident. Who knew how expensive it would be to care for these feather-fluffs?! I bought an Aivituvin small coop set up (that was my first mistake, just the paint and waterproof flashing tape added another $100!) that now needs to have some sort of covering to mitigate the cold, snow, & rain. Plus, now that I'm feeding them organic Scratch & Peck, my eventual eggs will be "million-dollar eggs". P.S. I watched one video on processing broiler chicks & there is no way I could have that happen to my girls. LOL, us city slickers!

Love your banter! Curious how the Bielefelder worked out for you. I have 1 hen and she’s a bit heavier than the other breeds. Friendly enough to eat out of my hand, but no where near as delightful as my charming Ameraucanas. She also has a tough time with our NC hot summer. That gray bird looks like one of my Australorps out in the rain. Thanks for video!

You ever tried their feed mixed with water? mine love love it. Less feed needed and hydrated chickidees. I give fresh bowl daily as treat. Cuts my feed buying in half. (They still get their dry in separate feeder) Love your setup 🙂

Have they been around grasshoppers yet? Mine go bat shit crazy for grasshoppers. They also go tiny T-Rex on any mice they find. Kinda disturbing, actually.
@jrboutdoors7771
@jrboutdoors7771 2 жыл бұрын
No grasshoppers yet. The chickens probably weren't big enough for them last year and the grasshoppers don't seem to be out yet this year. My cat kills a rodent of some sort just about every day and I was hoping the chickens would start cleaning up after him, but it hasn't happened. They're not interested. Even ones that were still alive and moving around. I figured they'd attack. The craziest thing I've seen them eat so far was a huge crawdad out of the creek.

@@jrboutdoors7771 I have had a few that follow at my heals for whatever I stir up. Some that hang around like a puppy when I am cooking at the grill. Other follow the cows or horses and pick apart the poop. There are also ones that refuse to roost in the hen house, but on too of it. Owls have taken a few of those over the years. When they get broody some will go find a bush to lay under rather than a nesting box. I find about ten percent of the hens will raise about ninety percent of the successful broods. I usually slip them a few extra eggs. Muscovy ducks sit good too and don't know or care when they have half a brood of chicks following them.

Your eggs and chicken meat are going up in value the way things are going. Have you thought of installing some kind of rain catch watering system for the chickens?
@jrboutdoors7771
@jrboutdoors7771 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would like to set up an automated watering system for both coops that are fed by the creek and/or rain. Right now I'm just walking small waterers over to the creek and filling them manually.
