Mamlambo Fossils

Күн бұрын

It's finally done! It's been a 5 month prep journey since I found this fossil penguin concretion washed up on the beach, but it really has been worth it! It wasn't quite alive with the dinosaurs, but I think of this as my dino penguin 😁
I learnt so much prepping this penguin and can't wait to try out all these new techniques on the next one!

We didn't do it pal, you did it. Congratulations on finding a Penguin Fossil. I know you have been looking for one for a long long time. They must be as rare as Hens teeth. Did it really take you 4 to 5 months to finish the prep ? How many hours per day did you work on it, I know it probably wasn't every single day, but what was the longest hour day you worked on it ? And do have an idea how old the fossil is ? My guess would be 12 million years.

Thank you so so so much for being willing to donate that piece to a museum for further studies. It speaks volumes not only of your love for history, but of your moral character as well. It breaks my heart when people prep them and just turn around and sell them without bothering to contact the scientific community to see if it might be a new species or something of educational value. Thank you for taking that into consideration and not just looking at it as of money venture!

@@dullahan7677 You can actually do both (Give/ensure museum access while also selling fossils), which is GOOD for science because a monetary incentive allows people to pay for their work and keeps them discovering while making it viable as a profession. The two things can coexist if they are done ethically and with a little thought and effort. But yes, having things that might have scientific value go right to a collector and locked away from study I would say is harmful to science. As with most things, it needs approached with thought and care instead of simple greed.
@audreymuzingo933

You might be surprised how disinterested scientists can be to even give a moment of their time to take a look at something an amateur has found. I've wound up selling (or just keeping for myself) fossils and Native American artifacts that I probably WOULD have donated if the experts I contacted would have bothered scheduling even 5 minutes to take a look at what I found, instead it's "Probably nothing, people mistake ordinary rocks for something else all the time". I certainly would not just donate a specimen without some sense of whether it will provide any new insights or just get chucked in a drawer and forgotten, not after all the work I did to find and prep it. This ^ guy can probably be sure his penguin will be appreciated and studied, because it's a stellar specimen obviously. But "lesser" ones, they're perfect for Ebay or a shelf in the living room.

If I didn't know better (& I don't since I've never seen fossils revealed by the tool used here) I'd say you carved a fossil, and painted it with that brush.🤣 But amazing process, cool.

" Congratulations " I'm so very happy for you. I've Been wating for sometime. I would take a break, and watch videos. Yours looked amazing. Here was the first one I chose to watch was one where the AMMONITE was in a glass tipe ball that you couldn't see through. I hope for that penguin 🐧. That's Fantastic news 😀. Right on ! Been looking for it, and now it's sits in front of you. Did You know that your excitement runs all over? It truly does. Yes, it turns ,You look a lot brighter in the face and eye's light. The ❤️ race's. I know this because when I find thoes special agates, I can hardly believe it. When I take a big breath I can start talking about what I have found to my sister.

Thanks so much Laura! I do get rather excited!! I'm the same with agates as well, especially the really big ones when only a little bit is poking out and you keep digging and digging and digging 😁

Think about it: before ww2, before the enlightenment and the renaissance, before christ, before the Mesopotamians, the neanderthal extinction, the ice age, and much more, this penguin laid. Quite the amazing journey

Thank you for wearing your respirator. Repeated inhalation exposure to the removed rock could permanently damage your lungs, so diligent use of the respirator allows you to pursue this hobby for a long time. But you already know that. Just to let your viewers know!
