I'm a 70 year old American man, a Native of Iowa. Decades ago I made friends with an Old Timer Rock Hound. His entire basement was his rock shop. Someone had told him that their were no jewelry qaulity rocks in Iowa. He took this as a challenge and over a decade made 50 belt buckles with rock from Iowa Quarries. He had them mounted on the wall. Stunning Collection. Wonderful Man.

My Daddy worked at GE; Battery (General Electric). He had a friend at work that, as a Hobby, found and cut stones. He started with Mama, and had a stone cut to go into a Ring, the stone was a deep Blue that sparkled Red under light. My older sister was next, but, I don't remember what her's looked like. I didn't get mine until after I finished Basic Training. I joined through the Delayed Entry Program, so, I signed my contract on January 3rd, 1975, and, was, therefore, required to Report for Duty to begin Basic Training on June 3rd, 1975, 3 days after I Graduated HS. When I got my ring I was bummed out because the stone was Orange. Being a Floridian, the only Orange I liked was Citrus Fruit. I had 6 MOS's B4 it was all said and done, but, the one that sent me to Germany, was the Heavy Equipment Mechanic MOS; ALL of the call #'s & letter's have changed since I was in, but I picked that MOS on purpose, to learn how to work on stuff. Anyway, one day in the Motor Pool, it fell off of my finger. I discovered it was missing just B4 Formation in front of the Orderly Room, for our 5 mile "DisCom Run", and, I went and told Top that I had lost my ring and I was going to go find it. Top said, "You can do that AFTER the run," and, I said, "Top, my Daddy gave me that ring, and, he's Terminally I'll; I may never see him again B4 he dies; I'm going back to the Motor Pool to find my ring !!" So, I walked back to the Motor Pool, and, quickly found it... Or, more than half of it, anyway. I could no longer wear it, because, the back of the ring was gone. It was a Sterling Silver ring that only displayed the very top of the stone. Rather "Ho-Hum..." I hand-carried across the North Atlantic 12 times and never lost it. In 1994, I manipulated husband #1 into having the stone re-mounted into a Tiffany Setting. When I got it back, I couldn't get over what a BEAUTIFUL STONE it was, now that I could see a lot more of the stone. The Jeweler at Zales looked at it through his monocle, and, said, "Tell me the story about the Stone, again ?? " So, I did. I've used it, when it was in the old setting, to scratch glass a few times, when the top of the stone wasn't covered. It always cut the glass, but, never scratched the Stone. He said that it was beautifully cut, and, asked me if the man who cut it was looking for a job cutting stones. I said that, I was pretty sure that he was dead, because it was a friend of my Daddy's, and, Daddy had been dead for a long time.

Iowa gal here. 😎 No jewelry quality rocks in Iowa? Puh-leeze! Apart from our fame with geodes, we have all sorts of jasper here and there. It's why we have a county called Jasper. Red jasper is one of my favorites, and there's plenty of it where I live. 😁😁 I'd love to eventually get into cabochon making, with the water blades and everything! It's been a while since I have been able to do serious rockhounding, but I work with stones and crystals in my spiritual life and Iowa, my home state, has plenty to offer if you look past the obvious.

I was on the Connecticut coast one Thanksgiving. When we went for a walk on the beach after dinner, I (a birder) was delighted by the variety of waterfowl in their little cove, but what knocked me out were the vivid red and deep slate-gray stripes in the sand. My hosts told me they actually did like the Marianne of the song -- they'd often be down by the seaside sifting sand. The larger red and gray granules would stay in their fine sieve. Then, they'd run a magnet over it to pull out the gray bits, and voila -- lovely red and black sand to sell to local sand artists. They were bits of garnet and iron ore pounded out of the granite face New England presents to the Atlantic. I thought that was pretty nifty, but maybe they should have been arrested.

I like how you were able to respond to the people who were upset that you took rocks from a parking lot without any sarcasm or tone. I don’t think I could’ve done it. lol. There are some really intense local, nationwide and world issues. I wish people would focus their energy on important matters but instead , they repress it and it leaks out all around them. Focus people! Beautiful, cut, and polish!

Love the rock exchange idea! We have a lot of limestone and river rock quarries in our area-I've never understood why they don't set aside one pile just for us rockhounds and charge a few dollars each to let people "mine " them. Lots of cool fossils, agates, and geodes there going to waste! It would be a win-win for everyone!
