As a reformed collector, my advice is to buy ONE very good watch and keep it forever. Get something that you'll wear every day for the next 20 years, something that expresses your character during business and pleasure. I believe that a good watch gets better with age, and over time it becomes at one with its owner. With every scratch, dent and ding it will become unique. People will expect to see you wearing your watch, it will become part of who you are. When you get old, hand it down to your kids as it will remind them of you.

@@MPD90 Yes, we do. : ) I mostly agree with your points however, I don't like Quartz watches just because of the fact that I've had watches broken by what I assume is incompetent watch makers who didn't check the seals properly after replacing a battery (I live in the third world). Automatics (or even better, solar) makes that issue go away for 10 years or so, and stand up to the occasional seawater and hard drive handling I might put them through.
@darrenlee14805 жыл бұрын
I'm a hydraulic engineer and I can tell you every 10m of water depth equals to 1 bar of pressure. I keep this principle in mind to design hot and cold water systems for high end high rise hotels and service apartments. Many watch people will said that the watch depth rating only accounts for static pressure and not dynamic pressure. But let me assure you the dynamic pressure is negligible for divers even if the diver is swimming at a very high velocity. Example, a diver is swimming horizontally with a velocity of 108 km/hour (30m/s) at a 30m depth of water with the help of propeller. Static pressure = 3 bar at a 30m depth Dynamic pressure = ((density of water x velocity)^2)/2 = ((1000 x 30)^2)/2 = 450,000 N/m^2 = 0.0045 bar. Total pressure exerted experienced by the diver = 3.0045 bar. From this example we can observe that even if the diver is swimming at a high velocity with the help of a vehicle, the dynamic pressure gain is very little.

Can’t wear a green watch most of the time. Kermit’s also going to go one of these days. My GMT’s the only watch that’s really been on my wrist 24/7 for the last 20 years. Of course you can that. Then you have a watch from orient, not bad at all. I own some watches of this bran. But you can't compare it with a Rolex, IWC, Lange. For me - one of the best things to do to detract from the allure of Holy Grail watches way outside my price range has been to look at cheap homages watches with the same design. For example I used to want a Piaget - but as soon as I saw a chinese model with the same design, I realized that I didn't really care much for it, it was just something about the allure of the price itself, and the luxury vibe, that made me drool. And for me - that's not a bad thing. I've realized that I'm a sucker for luxury, but when it comes down to it - I don't really care about heritage or brands, I just want something that looks good. And now I'm just as proud to wear my favorite inexpensive watches as I would be with an expensive watch.

Excellent video with some very good advice. I have some simple benchmarks that I apply when it comes to buying a new watch. 1/ The watch is to give me pleasure, what anyone else thinks of it is irrelevant, if YOU like it then that is the ONLY opinion that matters.the only person you have to justify the cost to is yourself! My second benchmark is very important to my, as I have got only my close up eyesight is not what it was. A easy to read display is vital. Any watch that has so much clutter on the dial that you have to stare at the watch face for ages to tell the time is off the list from the start, I guess that's why I tend to go for Divers or Fliegers. Keep up the excellent work, happy new year to you and all those how watch your videos

Some of us are in the happy position of not needing to "save up" for luxury items, which doesn't however imply that we deal recklessly with money. (Come to think of it, the first clause in that sentence may even be causally linked to the second clause - who knows?) Experience taught me that I regret impulse buys a good 25% of the time. This drops to under 1% if the purchase is well considered - hence the wisdom of mulling things over carefully. But hey, this is just what works for ME. If someone out there wants to get stupidly into debt by buying everything that tickles his whim, that's certainly not a problem for me. Each to his own.

Great advice, I agree with buy the watch you love not the one people recommend you buy etc. I brought my Breitling superocean heritage 2 in 42mm with blue dial and bezel on a mesh bracelet with the Tudor movement and I still love it every time I wear it and regardless of some collectors saying I should have brought a Rolex but I simply didn’t love it, I like Rolexes but I love my superocean. It’s important to buy a watch you love and enjoy not just something you brought as only an investment.

Avoid watches that are; difficult to read easily, too big/heavy, unnecessary functions, etc. I often regret a couple I’ve bought for this reason. Find your sweet spot watch and you’ll love it forever, or until you can sell it. lol

I've had mine for almost a year and it's the perfect everyday piece imho. Wear it with a suit or to the beach and it fits. Classic styling and I'm only losing on average about 2 sec per day. Was going to spring for a Sub but this one caught my eye in a store. Fortunately the person who had it on hold backed out and I snatched it up. No regrets on the decision.

About the water resistance, if it says water resistant, it means you can wash your hands in a bowl and you'll be ok, not suitable for swimming though. If it says water resistant to 50m, it means if you dive to 50m and keep still, the pressure won't wreck your watch. If you're a bsac novice diver 2 like me, you're only allowed to dive to I think 18m anyway. If you're a sport diver, you can dive to 40-50m if I remember rightly, but I was advised when I did my diving course that should you plan on diving to a said depth and wish to wear a waterproof to xxM watch, the watch should be rated to twice the depth your planning to dive to. It is to do with the pressure exerted on the watch as much as the seals on it. If you're a sport diver and regularly dive to 50m, then you'll need one rated to 100m, this is purely so you can move your arms around whilst you wear it at the said depth. It sounds daft, but imagine you've a watch rated at 50m, and you're at 50m , you're at 6bar pressure ( 6 x atmospheric pressure ) if the watch stays still, it will just about manage to cope with that extra depth. But move your arms around with watch attached and the reliability of that watch is compromised - all because you do what you need to do down at that depth - like swimming for example. But then again, why would you want to dive with a shiny expensive watch on, when a £50 one would do the job just as well? Hold on a sec, I need to do an oil change on my truck and bleed the brakes, let me go put my Versace 3 piece suit on.

I do agree with you, we don't need 300m water resistance, although it helps. I the have a G-SHOCK for when I am at the fire station and the pressure rating tells me that if I take a blast of water at close range, the watch won't buckle.

Ideally you need only one ☝️ good mechanical watch which tells time correctly, adorns your wrist, brings you joy when you look 👀 at it. But the watch collecting hobby is such that you can’t just settle for one. You may want every complication, in every possible metal/ material, whether in reality or as your dream watch. But it’s not always possible to’ve a perfect 👌 collection as tastes & trends keep changing with time & that’s the beauty of this hobby.

The one problem I have is that I’m always looking for more. I’m pretty young and got fortunate enough to buy a Rolex Datejust as a first watch. But already, just half a year later I’m looking at more expensive watches. Watches I absolutely cannot afford since I’m still going to school. I don’t know why I’m not satisfied with my current watch. There’s literally no one in my age that I personally know that has had the fortune to spend that much money on a watch, but I’m still not satisfied. It’s not that I come from a rich family or that I’m spoiled, I’m just not satisfied. I don’t know what to do.

Another thing to consider is how prices rise. I have a Rolex GMT Master which I bought pre-owned 7 yrs. ago; I could afford it then, but the same watch now is more than double the price I paid, and is beyond my price horizon now; I’m glad I got it while I could. I nearly bought an Omega at the time, but that same watch is still affordable now, unlike the Rolex.

I love looking at the expensive watches and internally balking. If I paid more than £1,000 for a watch I'd be scared to wear it because I'm careless as all hell and would end up dinging it too much. I just collect cheaper watches. Currently sat with a Seiko 5, an Ecodrive Citizen, Orient Bambino Gen 4, Orient Polaris GMT, Tissot PRC 200 and a Russian Poljot Buran. None of these watches exceeded £500 and they're all great to wear and look much more expensive than they actually are. For my next watch I'm looking between a Zeppelin, Seiko Presage or a Timex Marlin (red/burgundy dial)

@Cull_Obsidian5 жыл бұрын
“You barely need 30 meters”. This is dangerous and ill informed. Water resistance is calculated when both the water and watch are static. When moving the pressure increases exponentially. A 50m resistant watch can get water ingress from a power shower. Do you need 300m? Of course not. But narrator, the common agreed on number is 50m for surface swimming, 100m for even light diving/snorkelling
@sebsebseb19055 жыл бұрын
30m is for rain and ocasional splash from the sink... but I did some light swimming with a 30m without any problem
@PointNemo95 жыл бұрын
And especially as watches get older and the seals wear down the resistance to pressure is a lot more important.
@996rick5 жыл бұрын
This has been debunked numerous times, it would take massive movements to approach this being an issue. One doesn't need more than 50m WR, if the watch actually is 50m WR. If the seals are bad, it doesn't matter what you're wearing anyways.
@Cull_Obsidian5 жыл бұрын
raustin33 really? Because the WatchBox proved it live on air with their watchmakers. The video is on KZbin. If someone was the head watchmaker for several brands and is certified for the rest and says he won’t take a 50m watch in the shower. I’ll listen to what he says
@itsallrobbish5 жыл бұрын
That’s the theory, but then I bet most 30m Casios would take a plunge into the icy cold sea from high up, whilst tombstoning! I think it depends on the manufacturers standards. Without getting into gory details, I know of an F91W that had been in the sea for over a week and it worked perfectly!

A 100m rating with a screw down crown, is for surface swimming. Water resistance is tested statically, so when you are thrashing around or diving off the dock, you are increasing the resistance necessary to keep the watch sealed. According to the Breitling service centre, if you bring your watch into regular contact with water, you will need to have the gaskets changed every two years. Hot water will void the warranty, and shrink the rubber, causing leaks. Showering with your watch is also a bad idea because soap residue gets into the links and pins, and will accelerate corrosion, even with stainless steel.

I wind it every day and I do not go swimming with it. It still looks super!

After owning a few watches, I find that the most important area when buying a watch is it must be practical. Choose a watch which had features which you need and not want them. To me, I just need a watch for time. Date, month and year to me is not really a must and I don't travel much so watch with dual time zone is not necessary. And I find that longer days of power reserve for automatic watch is very important. At least you will not need to wind the watch more frequently. And lastly, I think just get 1 watch which you love within your budget will do so it will last forever.
