Hi Toby! I just wanted to tell you that I had my FCE exam 3 days ago and your videos have helped me a lot! I found this channel a week before the exam and watched most of your videos! (in 1.25 speed 🏃🏻‍♀️) Being honest, I have learned much more with you (and Bruce, Monica and Duke, of course) than in 2 years of my English classes. I realised I hadn't been taught even the half you have taught me in minutes. It was fantastic to discover SMASH English in time, I'm very thankful for that. As for the exam, I got so nervous that it didn't go as well as I had hope, specially the speaking and listening. But I hope I'll pass it... Even though I have done the exam, I will definitely keep on watching your videos because not only do I learn, but I also enjoy watching your great videos! And I'm sorry if I have made any mistakes in this comment 😅 I still have a lot to learn... Thank you very much! 😊

@SMASHEnglish

is there a difference in marks if I write a 140 words essay rather than a 190 words essay?
@SMASHEnglish
@SMASHEnglish Жыл бұрын
Yes, because writing 140 words is likely insufficient to adequately address all aspects of the task. If you write >190 words you are likely including irrelevant information which will result in lost marks.

I have a question: since the reading part is 75 minutes long and the writing part is 80 minutes long, the total is 155 minutes. then my question is: if I complete the reading part in 30 minutes, do I have 125 minutes for the writing part? thx so much
@SMASHEnglish

I have a question, you mentioned "put on weight" as some general vocabulary that we could use in this particular essay but it's a phrasal verb. I thought we couldn't use phrasal verbs in our essays. I'm confused :s

No. "Your idea" refers to an entirely new point regarding the essay topic. If you wanted you could include this "new idea" in your conclusion, however I would not advise it.

Is writing more than 190 words or less than 140 words a reason for failing the writing exam?
@SMASHEnglish
@SMASHEnglish 4 жыл бұрын
The problem is this: if you write less than 140 words you will not be able to include everything in the essay, so your essay will likely be insufficient. If you write MORE than 190 words you may include information that is not relevant to the task so you'll end up losing marks for content. If you can stay on topic, more than 190 words is not the end of the world. The examiners do not have time to count your words 😂 I hope that helps!

What is the essay question in your exam?
@gustavogimenez168
@gustavogimenez168 3 жыл бұрын
This video is great! I only disagree on one aspect. You've said "Do not give your opinion before the conclusion". Sorry, but that is not right. If it is an opinion essay, you state your opinion IN THE INTRODUCTION and in the body of your essay you support that initial opinion. Now if it is a for and against essay, of course you MUSTN'T give your opinion before the conclusion. You introduce the topic, then you present advantages and disadvantages and finally, you state your opinion in the conclusion. I think you should have made that distinction. Anyway, the rest of the content is really excellent!
@SMASHEnglish

Hey Gustavo! You raise a good point! However, for the B2 essay, every essay is essentially a for or against essay. This is different when it comes to other English examinations (IELTS for example)! Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it!
