Hi Ben) Thank you for the video, those are really helpful tips for the writing part. I have one question about the third tip which is inversion. So, you gave an inversed example 'not only can we reduce our carbon footprint by taking public transport, but also by eating less meat.' correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that by putting 'not only' before 'can we reduce our carbon footprint' means that after 'but also' we have to put similar clause in terms of meaning. For example, 'not only can we reduce our carbon footprint by taking public transport but also save a lot of money'. So, in this case, not only we reduce... but also save. Alternatively, we could say 'we can reduce our carbon footprint not only by... but also eating less meat'. Am I wrong?)

Do you mean Destination Grammar and Vocabulary?
@M.A.Regulus2 жыл бұрын
@@tothepointenglishwithben. Exactly. More precisely, i was comparing Macmillan's Destination B2 and Destination C1 with Cambridge's Grammar&Vocabulary for First and for Advanced, all of which seems less "scholastic" and more "to the point" than books like those part of the Complete or Objective series, where you find a lot of pictures that in my opinion are useless or even annoying. What do you think about that? Thank you again.

NOTES TO MYSELF: 1. Use compound sentences: combination of basic sentences: means sentences with two or more subjects. Connect with but, yet, nor, because, for, or. 2. More Relative Clauses: defining/non-defining : who whose that which where when. Climate change, which has been an issue for many decades, will.. _ non-defining güzel ve kullanması uydurabilmesi yaratabilmesi güzzel. 3. Inversion: Grammer area? Dozens of .. By … + ing. By taking but also .. not only can we … değş tokuş 4. Cleft sentence: It is education, that needs more investment. (More investment should be done in the education area demek yerine). 5. Passive voice: It is believed that climate change.. (Scientists believe that demek yerine) 6. Cohesive devices: Howeverr, Nevertheless, Moreover, Furthermore, In contrast. FLOW IS THE KEY. FLOW IS THE GOAL. THANK YOU VERY MUCH BEN TEACHER!! 🎉❤

@thebookdoc.writing.and.editing2 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much the worst writing advice I have ever heard. "Use passive voice." For what reason other than slide by a few extra words that your reader can then sleep to? "Make your sentences longer and more arduous to get through." Um, no. This is what academics do when they really have nothing to say and they want to turn a trivial point into a lulling bit of nonsense that leads Alice down the rabbit hole. If you are going to give advice, try giving good advice.
@tothepointenglishwithben.2 жыл бұрын
Hi! This video is for learners of English as a second language who are mostly preparing for the Cambridge English exams. The advice I give is based on the marking criteria the examiners use. We're not trying be Bukowski here. 🙂
@thebookdoc.writing.and.editing2 жыл бұрын
@@tothepointenglishwithben. I have never heard anyone ever recommend using passive voice. I don't buy into the whole thing where people claim it is evil, but it does do one thing I always recommend avoiding: using more words than you have to. The example sentence you used was horrible (I'll play it back in a minute). I taught comp 95/99 at a university where kids had to take the non-credit comp series to learn to pass the entrance exam they failed. I didn't try to get them to beef stuff up and make it boring. The opposite, really.
@thebookdoc.writing.and.editing2 жыл бұрын
@@tothepointenglishwithben. "Add extra, non-defining information..." That's a tragedy. Never just plow words in. If this is what the English test wants students to do, the test is teaching the wrong thing.
