If you want new Shadow Hearts, Penny Blood (spiritual successor) kickstarter got funded but needs more attention. They haven't found a publisher and they can't work on it unfortunately cause JRPGs aren't cheap to make.

We've all got holes in our experience. Like you said, it is impossible to keep up with all of the games, especially RPGs! 😂 Lufia 2 is one I've heard SO much about; a buddy of mine was really into it, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet. Shadow Hearts is pretty fantastic. Mechanically the series gets better as it goes, but SH1 is my favorite overall experience of the three. Dark Cloud is a really interesting one. I loved it, but I have a history with true Rogue-likes, so the core concept was up my alley. I quite enjoyed the literal world-building elements. Alundra is well known for being great, but also hair-pullingly hard. See also - Landstalker. I can't believe NONE of my friend group played Legend of Legaia. The combo-style, fighting game-inspired combat has intrigued me ever since I learned about it. A couple of classics I recommend are Phantasy Star 4 and Breath of Fire 4. PS4 is really easy to play, as it is on pretty much every version of the Sega Classic collection; Breath of Fire 4 should still be available as a PS Classic on Vita or PS3. Of course emulators are an option, but these are the official channels for them at the moment. I really hope Capcom sees the FF Pixel Remasters, the upcoming Dragon Quest Trilogy Remake, and all the other successful re-releases and decides to update the whole Breath of Fire series.

@@Shinky If they do remakes instead of ports, I hope they expand the dragon genes from 3 to all of them! LOVED BoF3, but I'd still recommend 4 over it for the smoother gameplay and pacing (sticking to the common 'one per series' logic).

Epic list of games! Guilty as charged over here with not playing any of the Final Fantasy games in my backlog... I probably have around 100 untouched Switch games in my collection, and yes, most of them are JRPGs 😅

That's a good selection of games to get around to. I haven't played Dark Cloud, but Lufia 2 is one of my all-time favorites, and Shadow Hearts, Alundra, and Legaia are all great picks as well.

Shadow hearts & Shadow hearst Covenant are in my top 5 favorite jrpg. Those games are so unique ! The story is so dark and mature (the first is really an horror story, like a resident evil rpg !), the MC is an anti hero, dark, hilarious, badass and powerful at the same time, and I love the fact that he can transform into demons !) If you want to try at least one game in this list, I really recommend this one !

@@Shinky People are quite heavily divisive on the change from traditional turn-based into action RPG and a rather drastic change in setting by incorporating a good dose of science fiction in it. I personally still like the remake because of its more condensed pacing and the Sinistrals' clearer incorporation of their moniker into the story accompanied by additional lore surrounding them even though it doesn't really add much.

You absolutely have to play Lufia 2 and Shadow Hearts! Lufia 2 might not be the hardest game out there, but it has a certain flair that is tough to beat (at least for me). Music is amazing and story is pretty good honestly, even if a bit linear. Do yourself a favor and play it. I think I like it even better than Chrono Trigger and that one is super high on my own list haha. Terranigma easily beats both of them though, but that's an action RPG. I haven't actually heard you mention the game yet in the videos I've seen from you (new subscriber though, still going through your backlog. ;) ). I'm not sure it was ever properly released in the US but yeah, get that one as well! As for Shadow Hearts, it's amazing. I will say though that SH2 is indeed miles and miles better but in order to enjoy it the most, it's best to play SH1 first. The horror elements are pretty nice and the humor is great too. Just don't play the game when you're tired. :P

I loved the game honestly, and Terranigma is on my list to play at some point, though I need to finish Soul Blazer and play Illusion of Gaia before that. My backlog is awful though. Like, really awful. I think I calculated it to be only at 40% completion whoops. I tend to get stuck on playing the same games over and over again...

Lufia 2 is great, one of the first JRPGs I ever played as a child in the 90ies. The others are all on my backlog (although I have played the sequels to Shadow Hearts, with Covenant being my 4th favorite game of all time).

I recommend metal max and metal saga. Highly under rated series. Most the games didn't get localizations, but fans have gone back and translated alot of them so you can now find roms with English translations with a little searching. Metal Saga was a playstation 2 game that was one of the few to get an English release. Metal max Xeno also got an English release as well as a second version that changed it from an rpg to an arpg.

@@Shinky They're biggest appeal is that their open world and mostly non-linear. Well, that and that combat takes place either on foot or in tanks and other vehicles. Kind of rare to have a vehicle based rpg that also allows on foot combat. Metal Saga is by far my favorite of the series. There is just so much to do in that one. It's nearly impossible to complete all quests in one playthrough without following a guide religiously.

Most of these I played a long, long time ago. Legend of Legaia was among the first several or 10 JRPGs I played, maybe in the late 90s or early 2000s, shortly after whenever it came out. Lufia 2 and I think even Alundra is another I played in early 2000s as well. Shadow Hearts I didn't get until later on in life though. Maybe 3 or 4 years ago, and Dark Cloud was 6 or 7 years ago. But I know what it's like sometimes not getting to some many years later, since it happens to me and I've been playing JRPG since the late 90s with Mario RPG being my first in 1996/1997 when I was around 9 or 10. There's just so many to play, and even now I have a small handful left to play, but they're lesser known titles. The more well known older titles I might have left to play is just some of the SMT devil games.

It is an actual crime that none of the Lufia nor Shadow Hearts games have ever been rereleased is an actual crime. Also, From the New World is absolutely worth playing, it's just very tonally different from the first two. And very much fast track Legaia to the front of your PSone queue. It has a certain kind of magic that's hard to explain

Just to add, out of these 5 games, I'd have to say the Shadow Hearts series is the best one, the first 2. The 3rd is okay. It's quirky and silly humor, a decent story but can be skipped. Legend of Legaia comes close to being as good too. They're all good. Maybe Dark Cloud being the worst one but still decent in its own way.
