Oh god. This is bringing back so many memories of arguing with my friends over the rules. I don't think I'll ever forget the day where Andrew slammed a Mirror Force down from his hand when I was about to hit him with a direct attack from my Gaia TFK. "You have to set the trap card first and it can't be played until the next turn!" "Nope. You activated my trap card's effect. All of your monsters are destroyed." Even after turning to the section in the rulebook, this sunuvabeech refused to accept that he was wrong and had lost the duel. THEN got his sister and another friend to agree with him because that's how they always played. Fuck you, Andrew. You lost that duel.

@@glitchedoomold comment but figure I would piggy back off of this - the original Yu-Gi-Oh story was highly centered on games and magic (ie shadow games) An issue of it being too dark / graphic and desire to sell merchandise had it retrain had it more focus on 'Duel Monsters' Similar issues to web novel / light novel / anime adaptations catching up to source material. They can't just wait, they have to produce something
@AzureKyle4 ай бұрын
@@glitchedoom The funny thing is, it wasn't initially going to be based on the card game either. It was going to explore many different games, which is why Yugi was labelled the King of Games, because he'd be able to win any game he played. In fact, the entirety of season 0 featured this, with Duel Monsters not even mentioned, and having Yami Yugi play various conceptual 'games' with people before killing them. Duel Monsters was just going to be another game before moving on to the next one, but it became very popular, so they instead focused the entire anime around it instead, and then when they decided to market it, they then had to formulate rules for the game, where the anime/manga really just did whatever seemed cool at the time.

There is a point of minor correction: people might be getting confused with the original _OCG_ rules where tributing for high level monsters was not in the game. This was changed within a few months (particularly because cards like Blue-Eyes were extremely overpowered) when the Expert Rules came out, and the TCG has always followed the Expert Rules and never the Original Rules, so it's possible that some people might get confused and think that's also been the case in the TCG.
@NickersonGeneral2 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but I think it's more likely they're just basing it off of how they played at recess when no one read the rules and dueled based on yugioh season 1 logic. I even remember when I was first getting into the game, someone asked me "ok, Duelist Kingdom rules or Battle City rules?"
@chucklesdeclown8819 Жыл бұрын
@@NickersonGeneral season 1 logic was insane, Ive been watching the anime and copycat not only can copy any card but usually is played in the spell/trap card zone. Which weirds me the fuck out. What is cool about season 1 logic is that "combos" seemed to need specific cards with specific conditions though, like to activate the virus card you had to attach it to a monster then have that monster destroyed to infect the others deck. Or that toon world could protect all your monsters you made into toon monsters, or that a lot of advantage is created depending on what type of field you fought on. That first season is balanced by the fact that it seems you can do a lot of things to counter your opponents play even if such cards are powerful. It just seems really weird how the first season logic works but it's actually really cool in a sense, like could you imagine if your monsters had to navigate a maze while worrying about monsters in the walls or under the floor while worrying that your opponent is creating a big ass boss monster that can protect each of the pieces from harm. I would love a separate ruleset just for duelist kingdom play cause I wanna see how they would handle that kind of game which was more like a board/card game mix rather then just a card game because it looks wildly interesting.

This was pretty nostalgic for me. I played in tournaments in old school yugioh. I stopped playing around 06 or 07. I can say straight up in early days there certainly was a meta. Every deck shared the same 30 or so cards. There were some busted ones. Raigeki, pot of greed, harpy's feather duster, monster reborn, and a ton of other no cost, super strong cards. You'd run 3 MST, have a witch of the black forest and sangan, and a bunch of 1900 atk 4 star monsters. Archetypes weren't much of a thing. I played a warriors theme, but that kind of synergy wasnt really the thing to do. Controlling your opponents hand was king. Hell you could throw a random yata garasu on your deck without control cards and win. I certainly stole a few wins that way before the little bird was banned. Sometimes you'd see others sticking to a theme, but a lot of the meta at the time was centered around solid cards that could be thrown into any deck and hand control. Dunno how the game is played now. A few years back I played with someone borrowing one of their many decks and the game was a lot slower and probably a whole lot more fair than when I played.

The anime was a weird fusion of the manga rules (which predate the card game by several years) and the real card game, which is why it’s so all over the place. For example flip effects were simply NEVER a thing in the manga, and it’s even shown LATE in the manga that it’s not possible to set multiple spell/trap cards face down in the same turn, which is certainly not the case in the anime... I also think it’s funny how there are a number of cards that were more balanced/powerful in the manga. Jinzo took 2 sacrifices, Baphomet and The Legendary Fisherman were 4 star monsters, and Dark Magician Girl gained 500 atk for every DM instead of 300, etc. Lastly, almost EVERY early card that became banned in the actual game (except thousand eyes restrict) didn’t exist in the manga and was introduced for the anime...

Some of my favorite "playground rules" (Just stuff me and my friends used to use): -Labyrinth wall can in fact function as a field spell (This would take a lot of explaining) -If your opponent has no monsters on the field, but have a field spell, you can forgo attacking them directly and attack the field spell (they take no damage but the field spell is gone, this can still activate spells and traps however so gotta be careful) -If you can make up a cool enough name you can fusion summon whatever you want, the attack is the lowest monsters attack + half the highest monsters attack (So like if you dark magician and blue eyes white dragon it would be 2500 + 1500) -You must explain the cards effect in a dramatic fashion or you have to flip a coin, if it lands on heads, the effect doesn't activate -Always comically overreact when losing, it makes it more fun and helps to keep people from feeling bad about losing -NEVER disrespect someone else's cards!!!!! As you can see we were huge fans of the anime's lol

The no tributes needed for Lv5+ monsters was never a in the TCG. However before the TCG existed in the OCG there was a short lived "Yugioh Jr" ruleset that didn't require tributes for summoning Lv5+. This simplified ruleset was intended to make the learning curve easier for younger players. I think it lead to too much confusion when those players later had to learn the official rules for sanctioned play, so this primer ruleset was discontinued.

As far back as 2003 Yugioh clearly had dominant metagame strategies including early beatdown decks and eventually Yata-lock control decks, both of which also featured a "meta" picks for all of the broken early spell and trap cards that were in practically every decklist. A year later, Chaos Emperor Dragon and Black Luster Soldier were so dominant that 85% of decks at the 2004 U.S. Nationals used strategies centered around both of these cards (kperovic.com/metagame/yugioh5da2.html?tabid=33&ArticleId=228). If people complaining about "metadecks" dominating in modern Yugioh tried playing competitively back in the early days they could have easily gone through an entire tournament without ever seeing more than one type of deck! The whole reason Konami made a Forbidden list was to try to stop these sort of early dominant cards from effectively being mandatory in every single competitive deck, and the principles for adding cards to this list are still the same now as they were back then. Like dzeeff said, people who played casually may have not been aware of this because the lack of social media and online analysis of the game, but the competitve meta in early Yugioh absolutely existed and was arguably even more dominating that it has ever been in modern sets.

A little late, but summoning in face-up Defense was helpful in making certain anime strategies work. Cards like Gate Blocker need to be face-up to apply their effects. So enabling a defense position summon means you can get a monster out with its best stat in front and without sacrificing its effect and creating extra tension in cases like Labyrinth Wall or Millennium Shield.

@CarmsCelestia5 жыл бұрын
The reason for that is that Duelist Kingdom doesn't really play "Modern Yugioh", but actual Duel Monsters. The Card game in the original Manga was indeed quite different: Duel Monsters (デュエル モンスターズ, Dyueru Monsutāzu), originally known as Magic and Wizards (マジック&ウィザーズ or M&W, Majikku ando Wizāzu), is the card game played in the various Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime series. It was created by Maximillion Pegasus, who based the card designs on ancient Egyptian carvings and hieroglyphs. The name Magic & Wizards is used in the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and early portions of the English Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, while it was printed in Shonen Jump. The Toei anime and the other anime series, and reprints and new portions of the English manga, use Duel Monsters. Other dubs and localizations, such as the Swedish Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime, kept Magic & Wizards despite the change. The Basic rules were used during Death-T and earlier. There are two players in each Duel. Each player makes a Deck using 40 cards. The Decks are shuffled before a Duel. There are two kinds of cards; Monster Cards and Spell Cards. Each player starts with 2000 Life Points. If a player runs out of Life Points they lose. At the beginning of a Duel, each player draws five cards, which become their hand. The players take turns. Each turn the turn player draws one card from their Deck. If a player cannot draw because there are no more cards in their Deck, they lose. The turn player can Summon cards from their hand in Attack or Defense Mode. Attack Mode is vertical. Defense Mode is horizontal. The turn player can attack with Attack Mode monsters. If an Attack Mode monster battles another Attack Mode monster, the monster with the lower ATK is destroyed and its controller loses Life Points equal to the difference. When Attack Mode monsters with equal ATK battle, both are destroyed. If an Attack Mode monster attacks a Defense Mode monster and its ATK is higher than the defending monster's DEF, the defending monster is destroyed and no Life Points are lost. If an Attack Mode monster attacks a Defense Mode monster and its ATK is lower than the defending monster's DEF, neither monster is destroyed and the controller of the attacking monster loses Life Points equal to the difference in the ATK and DEF. If a player does not have a monster to defend from their opponent's monsters attack, the monster's ATK is deducted from the defenseless player's Life Points. Destroyed cards go to the Graveyard. The turn player can activate Spell Cards from their hand. Spell Cards cannot battle, but can be used to affect other cards or the players. Spell Cards can be played face-down on the field until they are ready to be used. Spell Cards are sent to the Graveyard after they have been used. Some monsters have effects which alter gameplay.

And I don't think I would have understood this better if not for the fact that I just finished in a "Critter Format" tournament today. For those who don't know, this format consists of the first two booster packs and Starter Deck Yugi/Kaiba. The card pool is so hilariously limited, that everyone's decks looked almost exactly the same. I don't think there was more than a 10 card difference between any deck in that tournament, and I'm rounding up my estimate. Now I found this format very fun, but it would get so stale after a few times because you can't really do anything different. Basically you have two options: 30 cards plus 10 power houses, or 30 cards plus 10 control cards.

For this guy, he's talking about YGO 10 years ago. I was playing 15 years ago, and I can tell you there was a Metagame, and what was called "Chaos" with Chaos Emperor Dragon, and Chaos Soldier, Envoy of the End, was the first really solid, dominant archetype. Once that strategy was cemented, everything else was like a Rogue deck - Exodia Decks, Life Gain Deck, Warrior Decks, Fairy Decks, Fiend Decks, "Skill Drain" Decks, FIre Decks, Legendary Ocean Decks, Machine Decks, Dragon Decks, Spellcaster Decks, just general Beatdown Decks and Control Decks. There's always been a MetaGame.

@@godspeedhero3671 You had to commit to one because of type inconsistency. Blue-Eyes relied *heavily* on Lord of D and flute while also trying to find ways to even GET the damn dragons to appear in your hand, throwing in a random summoned skull on top of that hurt you as far as I remember because if you were against Summoned Skull he was hitting it with Witch ASAP so you REALLY didnt have room because Witch wasnt all that helpful in Dragons to use Skull as a backup. My own memory might be failing me though because frankly I played casual during upper deck so I'm using hindsight.

It's actually a very similar thing for Yu-Gi-Oh. In the DS game "GX Spirit Caller" for example, Ra actuall had the effect from the anime, where it would gain the ATK and DEF points of the monsters tributed for it. Some games even included anime only cards, for example Tag Force 4 for PSP included the trap card "Cursed Prison", which was otherwise anime only and basically an Instant Fusion for synchro monsters.

Actually in the original yugioh anime the god cards (well Sly and Obolisk) were shown to have many weaknesses that were exploitable. Yami Yugi for example even directly said outloud in his battle against Sly that the card had very significant weaknesses. The only case where this wasn’t true was with Ra. This god card was basically all mighty in the anime due to how it was hyped and used by Marick.

The Japanese card game actually split the rule set between "normal" and "expert" rule sets. The normal ruleset was more similar to the early games. No tributes for summoning, only one spell card can be activated per turn, there was no concept of "phases" either. Obviously, eventually the "expert" ruleset became the only ruleset.

Been playing since 2002. We did play at school and use alternative rules, but we did it for fun, not to be competitive. Me and my friends all knew the rules, but chose to bend them for the fun of variety. For example, we often had 2 on 2 team games or free for all games of 3-8 players. In these game we always established the rule set before the game. We’d sometimes have a non player act as a game master, who would establish their own narrative of the match, and introduce random effects, such as “X player has struck a gold mine, then now draw two cards per turn... 5 turns later, oh no! That gold mine ran out, X player can no longer draw.” Haha, it was fun.

The three first points you made can be explain with the manga's version of the card game (that first appear in the volume 2, chap. 9). The 2000 LP, the absence of tributes, the face-up defense monsters where in place for this version of "Duel Monster". The focus was more around the "shadow realm" punishment games, and less on the card game itself. That's why there were so much difference when they discovered they could take this part of Yugioh and marchandise it with clear rules that allows multiple strategy, plus center the whole story around it.

Technically in very old school yugioh, you could summon any monster regardless of level. Yuigoh released before an official rule book, so it was before competitions, literally when it first released. When the first ever starter decks released, they came with an official rule book that then states from then forth that you can only summon monsters 1-4, 5-6 require 1 tribute, 7-8 requires 2, 9-12 requires 3 tributes
@thegreatcheesedemon5 жыл бұрын
Some extra knowledge about tribute summoning: before the OCG was created, there was a Bandai version of the card game, and that version did not have tribute rules. Similarly YuGiOh video games released at the time like the first Game Boy game and Forbidden Memories did not have tributes. But this version of the card game never came to America (I think) and does not apply to any deck containing cards that are legal to use today, like the starter decks. This old version didn’t even have life points at all.
