Biggest myth that I hear all the time is that, "filters clean the water always and no water changes needed," believe it or not the filter is not self sustaining.
@FishForThought
@FishForThought 5 жыл бұрын
While I do agree that the average person's filter will not be able to self-sustain, there are definitely ways of making a filter become very sustainable (perhaps a cartridge clean in a year or a couple of years) and also systems without filters entirely.

I only cleaned my convict cichlids' filter every few months and topped off the water and they were fine. No way I'd be able to do that with the platy I have now. However, I only fed the convicts once or twice a week, whereas I feed the platy twice a day, and I'm currently overfeeding to get food down to the fry. Plus I have 2 mystery snails and 1 nerite in there as well.

One time I was walking at the park and as I was leaving there was this mom and her kid who had a little goldfish in a little fish bowl. The water was only about an inch or two deep and judging by the lines on the bowl they didn’t dump out the water for convenient transport. The water was bright green from algae growth and there was no substrate or plants. On top of all that they were wanting to release the goldfish into the creek. Me and my friend asked what they were doing and after they said they were releasing the fish we stopped them and said we would take it as I have a 40 gallon fish tank at home with other goldfish in it. We walked home with a fish and when we got home I slowly introduced it to my tank and it’s so happy now. I’ve had the fish for a few weeks and it is thriving. I named it Victory

SeaChem was a great plug. It temporarily detoxifies ammonia, nitrates and nitrites. I use it specifically because my source water has trace amounts of ammonia and it gets detoxifed before going in before the filter can get ahold of it.

It can definitely get pretty expensive however if I were just starting in the hobby again I would have never bought tanks, plants, supplies from big pet stores like petco or petsmart. Ive gotten some super great deals from Craigslist where people sell their entire setups for cheap or free. Also going to small businesses regularly has gotten me free fish and coral frags before.

To cycle a new aquarium I like to use water from another aquarium that I cleaned. Sort of like a sourdough method. The "dirty" water from another aquarium has already been through several nitrogen cycles and is the perfect starter for a new set up.

1. I recommend 4 weeks when no activated filter material is used. Also: Snails are awesome and most are less sensitive to ammonia/nitrite - they are perfect to start the aquarium, then add very few fish slowly, feed very little. 2. It is a pity so many countries have bad tap water. It is super convient to have high quality water you can directly put into the aquarium. 3. I had an ancistrus who was pissed about being caught and put in the new tank for a whole year - it would hide at the smallest sign of anyone approaching that I thought it was dead. (it is now more than 10 years old!) 4. With used tanks someone can really start really cheap, but $ 50 is probably way too low. I mean - who wants sick fish from some fish farm? Save money on equipment, plants, but not the animals themselves.

300 is pretty realistic for me on that first 10g. But the second through 5th tank actually aren't that big of a monetary sink since I'll already have enough spectrum, pool filter sand, hardscape and cuttings from my first tank. The biggest price jump for them will be from the sump system and plumbing while tank 1 will be on the backburner as a future qt tank

I prepared for the past two years to get a fish tank and was researching into it very carefully and making out my expenditure plans. You know I remember that my mom won a goldfish at the carnival when we were kids and we didn't have a lot of money and we did put the fish in a bowl but it was big and another thing was we also included plants in the tank my mom actually went out and used peat moss and then she kept it with gravel because she was a gardener we had a garden out front and in the back. Of course she washed the stones really well and she cut clippings from her ivies and put it in the bowl because we really didn't have a way of buying aquarium plants but the roots really kept the water clean from the ivy. It was a big bowl and it was in the kitchen so there was adequate light but not too bright and every day we would go in and feed it little pellets couple of times a day. Just enough for what the fish should eat but if I remember correctly we had that fish for about 5 years. My mom generally love that fish oh and I believe because we couldn't afford the decorator but my mom did was used half purified water cuz we have bottled water that my dad would get for us he set up a water delivery service for us even though they weren't living together they were separated. Mom would mix half purified water and half tap water so it wasn't as toxic to the fish she knew about nitrates and all that so she found other ways to help with that. I'm sure our fish could have lived another 5 years if we had had the proper set up but my mom worked two jobs and we were barely making ends meet and my mom just didn't want to kill the fish or throw it away. We didn't have any friends that had goldfish tanks and that had money. But I think that's one way reason my mom taught us to do the best for fish we had dogs too but ducks were pretty easy to care for. And it was after our fish had passed away I think if my mom had the ducks and the Fish at the same time she would have put the fish in the duck pond which was a plastic pool but she put it under the tree and it grew a little bit of algae but the water was clear and then our ducks would sleep in a hut that my dad built for them so when it was cold they would sleep inside but if it was hot they'd be outside quacking and looking for insects. Makes me really sad that my parents didn't stay together sadly they were too young. I remember my dad used to come over and mow the lawn so the ducks would have fresh grass to sleep on

Lately I've feeding my betta with tongs like 80% of the time, because I'm feeding her freeze dried bloodworms or live flightless fruit flies, so today when I just dropped in a pellet (she had just been given a fruit fly, so she only got 1) she didn't even look for it. So I had to take tongs and wiggle them near the pellet to help her find it.

But when we went to go get the betta, the worker told us that chemicals damage the water and that we shouldnt add chemicals and the tank should cycle on its own. it didnt make sense but im new to fish keeping and got the fish for aquaponics for school (i dont like killing things so while my classmates were getting fish bowls i got an actual tank) i also have live plants and 2 snails, but my mom got black gravel with a few rainbow pebbles that i dont like . Can you make a video on how to change gravel without scarring the fish? Thanks for reading! My betta (Phoenix) has been happy here for two months!

Sometimes when you see a fish “eating poop” over and over they are breaking the poop down so that it can get dissolved and filtered out or float straight to the filter, my African cichlids are so smart that they dig strategic holes in the substrate so that the current in the tank pushes the waste into the hole so I can clean it out easier and never floats 🤷🏾‍♂️

The reason I won't go marine isn't the price.... It's the extra work especially cleaning up salt scum XD. My Dad had marine when I was a kiddo, and I remember him scraping salt crystals off the tank rim regularly. He also had access to ocean water to refill the tank... Though I'm not sure that's much of a benefit since what he saved on salts he probably paid out in petrol and treatments for the various parasites that can be introduced via "wild" water and debris

All right people I'm going to give you a little help here. So you've got all the equipment for your fish tank,( good for you! Great job!) Now let's get down to brass tacks! First thing you want to do with your tank is put one inch of dirt in the bottom of your tank, then kept that one inch of dirt with one inch of your gravel whatever color you want it doesn't matter! ( this is very important if you're going to have live plants this will make your live plants produce 900 times more efficiently then just gravel alone and make your aquarium load a lot better once your plants start coming in!) Go ahead and set up your scape that's your design how you want everything set up in your tank! After all that is said and done it's time to add your water set a bowl in the bottom of your tank plastic glass porcelain it doesn't matter, pour your water into this bowl let it overflow and continue to fill your tank all the way up then Rich in and remove said Bowl. ( what does does s does not allow the water Force to mess up your newly scaped tank) Now when you bought your plants hopefully you also thought ahead and bought the long forceps / tweezers for planting your plants push your plants through the gravel and into the dirt also important to note if you're going to have red plants in your aquarium add play throughout your dirt the clay has iron in it that your red plants need to be red) Once your plants are planted don't yank them up every few days every few weeks let them get started and situated let them start growing because eventually what's going to happen is they're going to start growing big and healthy you're going to have to start taking clippings plant those clippings for free new plants into the substrate just like you did with the first plant. And where you took your clipping from on the original plant don't worry about that what's going to happen there is that the plant is going to become big and bushy right there pretty cool right!?! Now let's say your dirt poor like me what you can do is go to Walmart for your lights and purchase the lamps that have the clips on the bottom put a regular bulb in it clamp up to the top of the tank in the back bend it down to what shines the light to the back of your tank and right there your plants will grow from that I know this I've done this I've got five tanks and all of them are running off of this system 100% healthy it's to the point now I'm actually taking plants back to the pet store and trading them in and the few people I know with fish tanks I'm also giving them plants and teaching them how to do planted tanks that way if their power fails their plants will keep their fish alive 4 days depending on how many plants you have the more plants you have the better it is for your aquarium and the healthier your ecosystem will be in the more fish you can have and don't let nobody bulshit you and say you can only have four or five fish in a 10 gallon tank I had so many plants in my 10 gallon tank I had a hundred and ninety-eight Guppies not to mention the snails Pilates kois and the shrimp in said tank! they were fancy guppies then I got my 55 gallon tank and ran a water Bridge between the 10 gallon tank in the 55 gallon tank then I took a submergible pump put that in the 55 gallon and run another hose to the 10 gallon tank so now all the time the water is cycling between both tanks what are heavily heavily planted and my fish swim back and forth between the Water Bridge! now let's talk about what is the best water you can use for your aquarium. The best water that you can use is free, it's called Rainwater when you get one of those $35 test kits for your aquarium and the rain water test 0 all across the board you have the perfect free water for your aquarium, for water changes or what ever! and when you do your water change don't just throw away or flush down the toilet or dump outside or pour down the sink your old aquarium water, water your plants with it. it's full of nutrients and bacteria that your other plants can use if in your food producing plants! now let's talk about your filters you have one of those that has the carbon bag filter that you can open up it's got the clip on it and you have cats when you're done with your old filter don't throw it away let it dry out open it up and dumped it into your cat's litter box it will help absorb the ammonia and feces smell so that way having fish will also help with your cats and eliminate the litter box odor just one more free tip to help out and to help people save money! I just found this guy's Channel and gave him a thumbs-up I truly hope he does not mind me posting these tips and my advice to people because it's things that I've used and it's work for me and if I have offended him my sincere apology

Goldfish are easier to keep than tropical fish,but you need a huge aquarium just for a couple of fish,fancy goldfish are another matter altogether,I would say that they can be among the most difficult of all fish to keep healthy long term with their inherent physical distortions and mutations.
@FishForThought
@FishForThought 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and I also think it might just be harder to keep for some people because of the bigger tank size needed. If it's impossible to have a big tank in the house, goldfish are literally the hardest fish to keep :,)

@@FishForThought yes not many want or can afford a 100+gallon tank just to put a few "boring" goldfish in,its a bit like red slider terrapins,they may be cheap to buy but if people knew the huge amount of aquarium volume needed for just one animal to give them a decent quality of life they wouldn't buy them.✌👍

@Aqua_Gino 5 жыл бұрын
You might actually be introducing a myth of your own. Water at room temperature (I assume that's around 20 celcius / 68 F) isn't that much of a shock to tropical fish really. If you change normal amounts of water (say, 10-30%) and you pour it in one bucket a time, your tropical fish will be fine. Temperatures might drop one, maybe two degrees if you change a lot of water. Temperature swings can be much more extreme in nature though, especially in smaller streams affected by intermittent downpours. Ok yeah, you might want to be slightly more careful when you have like, discus fish swimming around in their balmy 1000 degree water. But most people don't. :D

When I was a kid, some rando gave my mom a 50-gallon fish tank and stand. Thing was cool af. Of course we put that generic blue gravel, and some marbles in there, some plastic plants and a couple fake logs. Filled it up with a whole bunch of 10¢ gold fish and a couple plecos (we called them algae eaters. Nobody knew what they were lol). Before getting these fishies, we kindof all just assumed that goldfish only lived a couple months. A couple died, but 5-6 of them, and the plecos, all lived like 8 years. Never seen a bigger goldfish. At some point, my mom got tired of cleaning it every other week and sold it to one of her friends around the block. The old ass fish all died. I’m still mad
