NASCAR dynasties, as are all dynasties, are the most difficult goal to achieve in the sport. Only the absolute best of the best were able to reach this pinnacle of accomplishment. Yet with that there are still many others who were on the verge of doing this same thing and joining the likes of Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson as immortal dominant names. These are 5 NASCAR dynasties that never happened.

1990 Mark Martin 2002 Mark Martin 2005 Greg Biffle 2008 Carl Edwards 2011 Card Edwards 2012 Matt Kenseth All looked like title contenders and the fact that not one of those 6 ended in a title is crazy I think the 2 here that have to hurt the worst are 1990 Mark Martin who lost on a penalty and 2011 Carl Edwards who lost on a tiebreaker 2011 always stands out because that's around when I got into NASCAR. A worst chase finish of 11th in the 10 race era and not winning the title that year is insane. I'll forever think 2011 showed NASCAR what they wanted in terms of the direction of the sport, with wanting drivers to get hot with wins at the end and steal championships they probably didn't deserve Harvick in 2014 Johnson in 2016 Kinda Logano in 2018 Elliott in 2020 Logano again in 2022 And Blaney in 2023 all fit this bill

@@BlandSpagetti Especially with Mark Martin. It's definitely a tough pill to swallow when you lose a championship by virtue of a questionable penalty, another one because the Pepsi 400 restarted on the last lap of the race resulting in getting caught up in a big wreck not of your own doing, or losing a championship because of a weird mechanical issue at Talladega.

The irony with Kevin Harvick is the fact the he won the title in the one year he was the least worthy in winning (comparing his 2015-2020 title runs). While Kevin was fast in 2014, he had nowhere near the consistency that Jeff Gordon had in that season. You could say that Kevin’s 2014 title came at a big price, as he lost all other title runs after this one due to a bogus championship system.

On the old school side, you have to put Junior Johnson and David Pearson on the list. Junior won 50 races and was in the inaugural Hall of Fame class, but never cared about the championship. He only ran the races he wanted to then retired early to be an owner. Pearson won 105 times but only ran the full season 3 times. The biggest knock on Tony Stewart is he only won two "Crown Jewel" events. 0-18 in the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600 and Southern 500. Just two Brickyard 400's. He was a legit contender regularly but never got the trophy.

Cool video. I think the only driver out there right now who could establish a dynasty is Larson. Raw talent and consistent speed. He just needs to be a little smarter behind the wheel. I think a driver that DEFINITELY should have been on this list is David Pearson. I really thought Furniture Row Racing was going to be on here for sure. Truex and Pearn could have been the next Johnson/Knaus or Harvick/Childers combination. They didn't just win a lot of races, they dominated races. But Joe Gibbs couldn't handle his team getting beaten by the second-string and pretty much forced Barney Visser's hand and basically bought them out. And while the 19 team was potentially one bad pit stop away from a title in 2019, once Pearn left, the chemistry just wasn't there anymore. Even though Truex would finish runner-up again in 2021, he hasn't felt like a true title contender, with the exception of last year (we won't talk about that epic chokejob in the playoffs), and the first ten races or so this year. If FRR doesn't shut down, I wonder how many races and championships they could have won.

As long as the playoffs are still a thing, no diver is ever winning more than three championships. But if NASCAR ever becomes under new management, we might see some of the young and promising drivers in the sport could have some dynasties late in their careers. Drivers such as Ty Gibbs, Corey Heim, Jesse Love, Rajah Caruth, Carson Hocevar could have dynasties in 10ish years. If we go further we could have current drivers’ kids have some dynasties in twenty years if they peruse NASCAR. Brexton Busch, Keelan Harvick, or Owen Larson could be household names in a few decades.

Roush had all this great talent in Kenseth, Martin, Edwards, Busch, Biffle yet only had one title to show for it. They came close in back to back years in 2004 and 2005. Edwards should’ve been a multiple time champion. Once Kenseth left, Roush was dead. But it’s nice to see them competitive again with Keselowski. As for Harvick his fall off was more in the team aspect than anything else. He literally had to carry SHR on his back for the last 3 or so years of his career because they were absolutely horrendous.

Drivers who missed out on dynasties: David Pearson Matt Kenseth Mark Martin Joe Weatherly Martin Truex Jr. Why? If Pearson raced a full season imagine how much he would've complished and would've had more then 105 wins and Petty probably wouldn't have 200 wins and could be closer in all-time wins with Pearson and Pearson could've had more championships then 3 Kenseth was in the Johnson era which was a big reason to with no dynasty and was consistent enough to win championships for example his 2003 championship with 1 win as to Ryan Newman's 8 wins Martin was an iffy penalty away from getting the title in 1990 and the only 7 time champions would've been Richard Petty and Jimmie Johnson and was consistent enough that he could've won more then 1 and was part of Roush's peak Weatherly possibly could've been our 1st 3-in-a-row champion if it wasn't for his death in a race and who knows how many races and championships he would've won if it wasn't for his tragic death Truex was in the Johnson era where he was irrelavant from 2006-2014 but from 2015-2024 he was 1 of the very best and would've won a title in 2019 if it wasn't for a penalty and if he won the war in 2018 which he said he was but aged like milk against Logano and he almost won 3 championships in a row from 2017-2019 Honorable mention: Chase Elliott Elliott was the best driver at Hendrick from 2017-2020 and if it wasn't for Larson going to Hendrick's #5 car who knows what Elliott fould've accomplished, would he be the all-time wins leader on road courses over Jeff Gordon (9) and Tony Stewart (8) and had championships in 2021 and 2022 if Larson went to SHR instead of HMS?

As an F1 fan in addition to NASCAR, the Roush mini dynasty of the mid 2000's reminds me a lot of Williams from 1995-97 in terms of dominating F1 for a period of a couple of years before falling off. Like Roush, Williams won back-to-back World titles with Damon Hill in 1996 & Jacques Villeneuve in 1997. After Renault left F1 after the 97 season, Williams instantly became a mid-pack team for many of the same reasons that plagued Roush & were totally unable to compete with the likes of McLaren & Ferrari for the World title. Apart from the 2003 season with Juan Pablo Montoya, they have been a non factor in the World title picture since. As for Tony Stewart & why he didn't have a dynasty that reminds me of Mika Hakkinen who won back-to-back World titles in 1998 & 1999 with McLaren. However he was unable to stop the machine that was Michael Schumacher & Ferrari who won every World title from 2000-2004. Lastly when it comes to Ned Jarrett his F1 equivalent is Jackie Stewart who very similarly retired early which had a lot to do with the fact that two friends in Jochen Rindt & Francois Cevert were killed in the span of 3 years in the early 70's which really accelerated his safety campaign.

I think you almost have to redefine what a dynasty is in the playoff era because the conventional definition is nearly impossible in today's NASCAR. Kevin Harvick and Rodney Childers for example, the 7 year stretch from 2014-2020 they averaged 5 wins and 18 top 5's a season making the championship round in 5 of those seasons. I only did a quick bit of googleing so I could be wrong here, but I couldn't find anyone since 2000 with a 5+ year period that can even compare to those numbers aside from Jimmie's win percentage during his dynasty, but even then the rest of Jimmie's stat line isn't really close. And just to add to how great I think Harvick and Childers were during those 7 years, the other three Stewart-Hass drivers combined had multiple wins in only three of those seasons. Once again, I know it doesn't fit the conventional definition of a dynasty because of the lack of championships, but I think that's about as close as you get in the playoff era.

If David Pearson had run full schedules in the 70s for the Wood Brothers, there's no telling how many more wins and championships he would have had. Petty would not have won 5 championships in the 70s, that's for sure.

Bring back season long standings...it really messes up the stats imo, it makes shit too random.. idk it really ruins the fact drivers can dominate. no its not "fun" but thats fucking sports..if youre good then you should win like thats a given.. that's a hill ill die on

Truex could’ve legit had 3 or 4 titles between the 78 and 19. You could probably argue the 19 should’ve had 2 or 3 on its own.

Please please can we sign a petition to NASCAR to change playoff system?😢 I know domination is not good but at the same time we need superstars and if someone wins 4+ championships they are superstars. With current format I cannot see a driver winning more than two championships..

Jeff Gordon would've won the 2004 championship if he won at Darlington, and what cost him the championship that year was mechanical failure at Atlanta. Jeff Gordon would've won the 2007 championship if he finished top 10 in all 36 races. If Gordon went to finish second at Texas,he makes the final four over Ryan Newman, and he is racing for a championship. He wins the race and the championship. Harvick would've never won a championship because of that. Kyle Larson is next one to have a dynasty. I hope I'm right. Jimmie Johnson could've won the 2004 championship if it weren't for a crash at Kansas, making him a eight time champion.

Fred Lorenzen with Holman Moody. Or Holman Moody with 96 wins in 525 starts. Over 18% win rate and then they just quit. But if they had kept racing....

What could have been if Harvick and Ky. Busch swapped rides after the 2007 season. Harvick could have had a better ride earlier and he could have even brung Toyota there first title instead of Ky. Busch

Would say Jeff Gordon and Christopher Bell as well too had things worked out for Christopher Bell in Phoenix he would've gotten back to back championship's im 2022-2023 and he would have 6 wins right now and he be going for his 3rd championship in a row this year he might done what Jimmie Johnson did when he went 3 in a row.😊

If you want to go backwards in time. Cale at Junior that’s a dynasty DW at Juniors is a dynasty. The missing dynasty Bill Elliott at Junior Johnson. Just say 1993 starts with Brewer n Elliott brewer never gets fired Junior never made that stupid phone call. I see 2-maybe 4? Championships 93-99 bill has a Busch team never a cup team part owner cup owner maybe. Maybe he does go to dodge. Hendrick wouldn’t had Budweiser. See what Tim meant to the 11 team
