I think the square applicator is fantastic and I’m so so surprised how well the graphite spreads. The smoothness is just bliss. 2 years down the line and I spotted your video Jon. Thanks mate

I worked in IT some years ago and a company called "Safe Clean" provided us with a rage of these kind of cleaning wands, some very simlar to the current pastel applicators with replacable foam tips. We used them for cleaning laser optics and magnetic heads. Its good to know these are now available cheaply as from what I remember, they were crazy expensive.

I work in a dental office in the lab and all but one of these blenders I have already and work with them all of the time. I just had no idea that they could be used for blending. I just started drawing in Feb. Perfect! There are two sizes of micro brushes that I know of, fine and regular and not too much difference between them really. There is also a thinner one usually black. I order mine through a dental supply company.

I’ve got the the large sponge applicator and the micro blenders. You are right the large ones are good for soft pastels and a lot cheaper than the pan pastel blenders. A very valuable and interesting review . I like the look of the small applicator as well

As always a wonderful informative video. I use sponge applicators for my charcoal and pastel drawings. Now I got an idea how to blend the fine Details better. Thank you so much and kind regards from Germany.

I can’t believe nobody’s suggested this yet... but get yourself to Hobbycraft or the Range and get a few of the silicon rubber sculptors tools. They’re great for fine, delicate detailing... and some larger areas; maybe not quite so much for the powders...... but give them a try - I keep the finest I could find... and a 1/4” tool in my drawing bag because when you have those delicate bits to blend... you’ll hate yourself if they aren’t there!

Thanks for making this vid Smoothie, I am having slight issues with my generic brand blending stumps and getting a smooth blend for the reflections in the water mill drawing of yours that I am working on. Ordered the derwent blending stumps (I know you have high praise for those) and also those micro brushes!
@smoothie77drawingpainting5 жыл бұрын
The Derwent blenders are the best I have found, nice soft blenders the really work better than anything I've tried, you will notice a huge difference with these compared to the harder generic type blenders, BTW just checked out channel and subbed, wow, you've got some stunning scenery around you!

What's the brand of graphite powder you've got there? Am getting lazy about scraping graphite from sticks and looking to buy ready-made powder, so wonder which brands are good in the UK. Also makeup sponges, even those chunky ones, give pretty smooth blends too.

Smoothie can you please tell me how do you deal with graphite shine is the fixative the only solution after finished painting to lower the amount of graphite shine?I honestly love more graphite over charcoal and any other medium in that sense because it's totally non toxic compared to other options out there but only problem with graphite is shine nothing else .

I use a small soft makeup brush. I noticed my smallest one with the shortest soft hairs work best, because the hairs are short and don't bend. The bigger ones however are too long, the hairs bend and don't blend. lol.

Hi there, can these blenders be used for coloured pencil? I'm struggling to find a suitable one that does not destroy the paper! Some blenders for colour pencils are so abrasive theyerase the colours and scuff the paper. Others leave an annoying waxy glaze that cannot be drawn over, and some are just useless! Many thanks.
@smoothie77drawingpainting6 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried them on coloured pencil so would know, but I can't imagine they would work well for cps most artist use solvent to blend.
@firefly016 жыл бұрын
@@smoothie77drawingpainting Thanks for your reply. I will try the solvent instead.
@WhiteFyre3 жыл бұрын
To blend coloured pencils, I use the prismacolour blending pencil. It's a "colourless" wax based pencil. You can buy them separately. IMHO I've noticed that it makes the blended colours less vibrant, but softer. It doesn't blend like I'd like it to, but I'm less experienced with coloured pencils, I tend to use graphite. It doesn't destroy the paper though!
