rather than razor blades, I use box cutters with retractable blades. Easy and safe to hold, easy to snap the ends off and get to that sharper bit. I use the thin ones rather than the really thick box cutters but either works the same. They're not quite as sharp as razor blades, but they're so easy to use that I think it's worth it.

Man, you're right.But please tell me,how this video and this channel has so much attention,when he didn't even know how to use a pencil sharpener,yet he demonstrates a completely wrong use of the Staedtler 2mm sharpener and everybody gives thumbs up. Not only he never realised the obvious,that the sharpener has 2 different choices for strong tip or superfine,but he also oversharpens the tip, which will just make it break,the moment he puts the tip on the paper,even with the ligetest touch. He can easily go through one lead in a go,trying to sharpen it,without even managing to draw a line. Is people for real?? Have all become so dump nowdays??

PRO TIP: If you are sharpening with a sandpaper pad, POLICE YOUR PAD! The graphite is not really stuck to the sandpaper, it's all too happy to fall off, on to your desk, your hands, your clothes, or _your drawing!_ Be careful with it, give it a special place to sit away from your drawing, but within reach. Don't shove it into your pencil case if it's dirty with graphite. I always tap mine off over the trash can each time I use it.

The "Blackwing" sharpener is just a re-brand of the Kum Long-point. They work quite well, but the container part is a bit small and needs to be emptied every time. I've heard there are two variants, the better one has the metal insert which blades attach to instead of having molded plastic.
@bashmelek5 ай бұрын
Any idea about which one is metal? I only found the plastic one and step two didn’t work. Terrible experience from an overpriced sharpener that couldn’t sharpen
@pauljs755 ай бұрын
@@bashmelek I don't know if there's some specificity to it. It's just translucent red on the outside, and has what appears to be a magnesium or similar metal insert with the plastic molded around it. If you look through the clear window part, the blades attach to the metal block which is gray in color. The metal is harder than the plastic as a fingernail doesn't scratch it. However I could understand your frustration. If it's a company being too cheap, it might be a matter of luck in sourcing the right production run in order to get a good one. (Hopefully it's not something too old and discontinued.) The only way I'd suggest to try for it is to get it from a store rather than online, so you can give a look-over to see how it is made if it has clear packaging. Maybe I'll post a pic to my channel discussion section on KZbin?

This feels like a good way to put people off pretty quick. And i happen to like art . All this knowledge about materials and tools ( using like advanced sharpeners, sanding pencils) this feels over whelming and people pick up on preferences on tools over time anyway . Man drawing needs to be fun with as little barriers to entry as possible. just my feedback (full context- i was watching the beginner series and can't believe he info dumped all this complexity in the first few videos on presumably us novice artists.)

Try a 2.0 mm pencil and you'll never want to use anything else. They're awesome. At 2mm, the lead is the same diameter as those found in a typical wooden pencil--meaning you can shade on the size. Unlike a wooden pencil that shrinks as you sharpen it, these maintain their size and weight.

@@sunriseboy4837 I should've clarified. They're properly called Lead Holders. It's what he's displaying at 15:03. Thanks for the video. Pro tip: Graphite conducts electricity. Do not place pencils in a backpack or other bag with electronics. A broken off pencil lead in a backpack that then works it's way into a USB port can fry a motherboard when you boot up your laptop. Also, if you have a pencil sharpener... DO NOT PUT INTO THE SAME BAG AS YOUR ELECTRONIS EVER! Graphite dust from a pencil sharpener will fry motherboards on cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc... I call my laptop bag, my "Sterile Laptop Bag". No pencils, no food, no salt packets, etc. Graphite dust under the keys of your keyboard ... Bad Mojo Dude. Don't do it. Additional warning, be careful when dumping the dust from pencil sharpeners. Graphite dust conducts electricity and drifts in the air. Do not dump pencil sharpeners into the trash in the same room as your electronics.

Having tried this method , my general observation is what works for a harder material doesn't work well on more fragile material. A woodless thick graphite is probably suitable for this method, a charcoal pencil will most likely break, unless it's used with an extremely delicate touch. Don't toss your pencil sharpener just yet.
@Medvssa Жыл бұрын

The sandpaper I knew already and the electric pencil sharpener (the one shown for the eraser) is the only way to sharpen colored pencils without breaking the tips.
