Also how did you replicate the face so well?
@jimmynswgrАй бұрын
@@puppetme6316 someone on the internet had done a 3D cad file for 3D printing. I rescaled it, printed it and got .5mm copper sheet, annealed and beat it over it as a former with soft hammers. Took many annealings and lots of beating, but it worked remarkably well. No chance of melted faces!

is this a commercial design or did you design it yourself?
@jimmynswgr2 ай бұрын
@@jacob2954 I designed it myself, using Greg Edward’s data sheet for the New South Wales Z18 class as my main dimensions. Cylinders are guided by a mix of Jinty, Titfield Thunderbolt and Pansy, the later two by LBSC. Bore is 1.375”. Valve gear was designed using GS Willoughby’s Model Engineer article from 1937, however there could be improvement made here in that regard. Boiler was designed to AMBSC code. Referred to photos I took of 1803 at Thirlmere and with some friends tips filled in the gaps.

@@jimmynswgr Partly Curiousity and Partly personal experiences on our own miniature railway. [ 7 1/4 inch] Spring point in one section. Carriages not liking to go 'up' another section of track points, and derailing unless you are going over at a crawl. (points are on a bend and bottom of a hill) Stuff like that. So our railway is mostly single direction.
@jimmynswgr2 ай бұрын
@@englishtwister fair enough, that makes sense. I have one engine, a 4-4-0 that prefers going only one way because of a kink in one of the curves, but that is an exception, all my others don’t mind either direction. Grade is steeper one way but that makes it more interesting. The 4-4-0 has a Bissell truck so it means it has a very rigid long wheelbase.

@@puppetme6316 no way mate, I think you have missed the point, it isn’t supposed to be an E2, it is a New South Wales Railways Z18 class tank engine as painted up at the Thirlmere Rail Museum. You probably underestimate the effort involved in building a miniature steam locomotive from scratch.

Wow! That's a very nice live-steam miniature gauge model of Thomas the Tank Engine. Would you build his two faithful coaches Annie & Clarabel next, or some other engine characters like Percy the Small Green Engine, James the Red Engine, Edward the Blue Engine, Henry the Big Green Engine, Gordon the Big Blue Express Engine, or Toby the Tram Engine with his coach Henrietta if you be interested in building? 👍🚂🚃🚃🛤 Also, you're not the only one that built a miniature live-steam Thomas - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iV7QZmhsr5dnhrMsi=EONL6_15J3kU4nOz

@jimmynswgr2 ай бұрын
@@alistairroberts3848 yes, I am extremely aware of that! Hours have been spent trying to tweak, however I must have made some geometric mistakes in design. As the late Don Ashton said, no amount of valve setting will remedy poor design. It will need to be redesigned. Point of suspension is wrong. Die slip is excessive. Launch links. I will attend to it, but it won’t be until I have time to do it properly. This engine was built to a deadline sadly, in time for my daughter’s birthday party which is two weekends away today.
