Thomas looked back. Thomas: **Opens his firebox door, and moves his face** Why bless me! If we haven't left them behind!
@shootingstarproductions2530
@shootingstarproductions2530 2 ай бұрын
Thank god you didn't go the shed 17 route. However, here are a couple of things to note. (and yes, ik this is for fun, I'm just saying this to get some facts straight) One: There are no eyes present in the windows of any locomotive. The ones who come close are the culdee fell engines, which have faces on the back of their cabs. How Thomas looked back can be explained by his face [which is on his smokebox door] swinging open to look back. The model series cannot show that due to limitations/scarring the audience. However, even then, Thomas can rely on his crew as well. Two: Locomotives in general can't grab things with their buffers. I think you got them mixed up with their couplers. Even then, do not trust early Thomas KZbinrs, as that stuff is fanmade, and isn't really canon. They use the buffers as arms because it's funny and stuff like that. Three: Tenders are *VITAL* , for certain locomotives. Engines like Thomas and Percy don't need the tenders, because they were built as tank engines that can't go long distances, while larger engines like Murdoch and Gordon need the tenders to not only go the distance but to also store more coal and water than the tank engines. If they were for cosmetic reasons, then why do larger engines have them around at all times, and without the tenders, they can't go anywhere. [As shown in Love me tender] Four: Henry in his old shape had plenty of coal, it was the fact that his firebox was small and couldn't create enough steam, due to the current coal supply. With Welsh Coal, he could steam better until the flying kipper incident, and after that, he was rebuilt. Five: The reason why Thomas nearly blows up is because there are fish in the water in Thomas' tanks blocking the proper systems to help feed water into his boiler. He doesn't feel bloated or anything, even with plenty of water in the tanks, if the injector fails, the engine has no way of getting water. He didn't have too much water. Six: "Only when their engines are removed." I'm sorry, *what.* That's not how it works. A locomotive dies in one of two ways. Either they are damaged so heavily in accidents that they are killed instantly [ex, boiler explosion] or when they are cut apart and scrapped. Every last piece must be scrapped. Also if the faces *are* mechanical as you say, then engines can't die, as their faces might be transferred over to a different engine once their body is scrapped. A steam locomotive is technically an steam engine on wheels. It might work for diesels, but steam engines are diffrent. Seven: Rev. W. Awdry was a priest, yes, but he also grew up around railways, and volunteered at a certain narrow-gauge railway in Wales. He would often hear the engines at work, saying that their puffing and chuffing reminded him a lot of people having conversations with each other. The engine's minds and bodies are one and the same. Eight: yes, Tugs is Thomas' sister show, and yes it uses the same concepts of faces. That doesn't mean that it operates on the same standards are it. Tugs were more complex than Thomas, being run by a few members of the Thomas crew before season three aired. Tugboats have boilers in them to be operated and all that fancy stuff. Plus, Tugs only lasted a whole season, before it got canned, so we don't know the full extent of it anyway. Even then, they are one and the same, as how else do you think they can move without a crew looking after them? They have full control of their bodies, and their minds think alike. nine: The later seasons of the series had bad writing, due to showwriters being not knowledgeable on railway practices, and many fans had a discourse over there. An engine's desire has nothing to do with how they operate. They *need* a crew to keep them functioning at all times. As for the personalities being switched, again. Bad. Writing. Again, I know this video was for fun, but I just wanted to let you know of a few things that should really be said and that you might want to recheck the facts. This theory needs some work, but it's a good start.

Add on to six: if you’re saying that engine faces can be transferred to other engines, then why did Oliver and the Stepney get rescued by Donald and rusty from the scrap yard if that was the case, what I’m thinking is, that while there faces are mechanical, there eyes aren’t, which leads me to assume the eyes contain their souls, and no matter if you put their faces on another engine, they wouldn’t work because their souls would still be within the body that was about to be scraped.

Thomas is supposed to be incredibly meta. Basically it’s our world and history but there is an extra land mass in Britain, and vehicles can talk. All forms of media including RWS are interpretations of what happen, (awdry visits Sodor in-universe) so the show in-universe is Britt alcroft find out the RWS on the bluebell, gained the rights, made the pilot, then the show aired on ITV.

I've said this a million times in a million different places, but the faces are just a metaphor. Thomas is simply the extension of the intrinsic feeling many train crews had that their engines were alive in one way or another. Members of the same class could perform differently, as though they had personalities. Some days they were easy going, and some days you had to fight them. Above all, just standing next to a fired steam locomotive invokes the same awe as being in the presence of a mighty animal with all the sounds, motion and smells. They just talk and have faces in Thomas to better illustrate what they're thinking and so they can imprint on readers better.

Even though nobody seems to have asked, im going to explain the senses of what we call 'non-faceless vehicles', or to be more specific, the engines. 1. Hearing is diferent between steamies and diesels. Diesels hear through the grates on their sides, which let sound in to echo around in their interior cavities, allowing them to hear. Steamies use their smokeboxes to hear, with sounds coming in through their funnels/smokestacks/chimneys, and then echoing around in their smokeboxes. 2. Touch is felt through the metal on their entire extirior, but mostly they use their buffers, as Steaming_Along stated 3. Smell is relatively simple, being as engines clearly have noses on their faces 4. Sight was explained by Steaming_Along already, so I don't think I need to reiterate 5. Taste also seems to be in the face area, even to the engines tend to 'ingest' fuel through their fireboxes. I credit my knowledge of the sense of hearing to Victor Tanzig, go check out his youtube channel and if you like his work, drop a subscribe while you're there. If you read this far, thanks!

I have actually created my own idea of how the engine's sentience work (inspired by MasteroftheLemons). It's that the faces *are* physical, but they are manifestations of the engine. As engines in real life are often referred to as "living and breathing", then it makes sense that the engine itself is alive, but it communicates/interacts with the rest of the world through a face. This idea resolves issues with some RWS only characters. The Culdee Fell engines have 2 faces, one on each end. However, i believe that this is a factor exclusive to specific engines. It is 2 faces, but only 1 "soul". The engine would change which face it is using, with only one being visible at a time. This also apply's to Toby, Daisy, BoCo, Bear, D199, D261, and every other engine with 2 cabs. They are illustrated with their faces on the other end in the books sometimes, such as in Toby's Megatrain. This only applies to mountain engines and engines with two cabs. In cases like Mighty-Mac, it is two "souls" in one body, very much the equivalent of conjoined twins. Additionally, the engines can "remove" their face of they so choose. This allows crews to do things such as clean out the smokebox. The engines would also "lose" their face when they sleep. The engines are also capable of falling into hibernation of sorts. When Duke is left in his shed, he says he will "go to sleep to pass the time." Then when Duke is found, he wakes up and is just as he is when he was put in the sheds 20 years ago. I interpret this as an engine preserving its soul over long periods of time. This would also be a case when engines are left in scrapyards. So yea, this is my take on how the engines are sentient. Feel free to use this idea or build apon it or whatever, i don't care.

The trains are just normal trains, they’ve been in accidents, they have certain mechanical quirks, but at the end of the day they are just machines. However, the people of Sodor love these machines and talk about them as if they are people. The Reverend’s stories are reinterpretations of “real” events, but giving the trains faces in order to convince the audience of what he has believed his whole life… trains DO talk. Go to any preserved line with and active steam engine, and you’ll hear her whole life story! Awdry didn’t have some big explanation for how the trains were alive, because in his mind, they always have been!

Where do these machines gain consciousness from? Magic. (Can't you tell I love TATMR?) How to engines drive? Simple. It's like learning to walk. The drivers are there just to monitor and gauge the engine. There are more specifics but I'm not going to delve into those for the sake of my time.

Tenders are not part of engines biologically, or engineering-wise. Tender Engines store Fuel(Coal, Wood, Oil...etc.) and Water in the tenders. They can work without tenders, albeit for a limited time and with difficulity. The Aurora from Metro Exodus is a Kolomna Locomotive Works P38 locomotive with several modifications in the post apocalyptic landscape. The P38 was a Tender Engine, but the Aurora is modified to be a quasi-tank engine, using external storage for water, and internal storage for coal. This gives it some range, but it becomes an issue in the game, that this is far from being enough. D51 Class "Hiro" also first steams without his tender in his movie, which confirms that they don't need their tenders biologically.

( from the railway series. ) Stephenson's rocket and maybe Edward. All of which are 19th century engines. And even though technology was advancing at that point. I don't think they were at the point where they were putting mechanical faces on 19th century engines that were working up in the hills and in mine shafts. It's a cool theory in concept, but when you do think about it falls apart in my opinion.

As a fan of TATMR, I was under the impression that the engines faces are made of magic, sort of like a 3d solid hologram.

Funny, I thought they were all magical machines. Machines that can think and feel so long as someone believes in them (from Thomas and the Magic Railroad). But anatomically, I think it's their furnace that does most of their biological functions of breathing and eating while their funnels are exhaling. Steam I think is both an energy source as well as a waste product. But even better... What if the engines worked on a simpler body plan like that of insects?

8:13 I kinda have a theory to this So, Gordon and Spencer are cousins, right? (Correct me if I'm wrong) and they were built by the same person, right? (Also correct me) so my theory is that trains are made via the person who's designing it. So if ALCo made locomotives, then those locos are related, becaus they were made by the same thing.

I have my own series, I am going to explain the life of engines, how they come to life and how there can be different genders in the series. It’s gonna be completely unique. You’ll love it.

They don’t look through their windows they would put in their made out of glass glass. He looks behind him because they have a very, very very large range of site. You were a 2 foot terror and you look behind you with only your eyes. You can definitely see like 75 football fields, that’s basically the same thing with engines

Well I hear about Shed 17 where the face about a grayish white blob to become on the face. IDK what that counts as. There was a similar theory from Most Amazing Top 10's Top 10 Scary Thomas the Tank Engines Theories though it is no longer viewed.

I don't think the steam engine being a heart would make sense because if a steam locomotive is stopped, the steam engine would be stopped because it is only connected to the wheels, shown as pistons and clearly visible on outside-cylinders steam locomotives Diesel engines being a heart makes sense, it's a normal engine turning a generator to produce electric around the locomotive

I theory I have is that the powertrain of a locomotive (steam, diesel, electric) is not the heart of the engine, but rather their spine, if their engine is taken out (Just like the engine refit scene) they wouldn't die or go into a coma, they'd still be very much conscious, but be unable to move just like a real human. If a human's spine is damaged, they are alive but can't move.

So are we ignoring that canonically engines can have faces on either their front or back depending on need, like the culdee fell engines and daisy and boco in the books....you could argue that in the priginal books at least the faces are organic albeit mystical

I know the face theory makes sense but i have a theory about it The face is connected to the smokebox door AKA you can open it And they dont have mechanical faces its becuase the cgi changes it So the engines dont have metal as the face or human faces Its made from a rubber that is kind of like skin

I may have my own headcanon explanation behind sentient locomotives with faces. Although it's partially inspired by the Pixar Theory with how they form.
