Another reason the Raptors are based: They are known for taking command of local Imperial Guard forces on whatever planet or sector they have been sent to and efficiently working in tandem with them to achieve objectives. You know using them as a resource, rather than just ignoring them or treating them like useless cannon fodder. Expert jungle fighters too, on par with the Catachans after surivivng on a jungle death world for 7 years.

@@rayvg7709 It is in the sense that they will proactively take command of not just entire armies, but actually embed marines into individual IG units at like a platoon level. It's also less of a 'follow me' kind of leadership, and more of an advisor role to better coordinate strategy and tactics. Fits in with their overall doctrine which is to achieve the mission in the most efficient way possible with no thought toward glory or notoriety.

@@Ron1nVsEverything appreciate the reply, and yeah I understand the distinction, the Blood Angels do that kind of thing too. When briefing happens they don't exclude the normal humans from the meeting, giving advice and explaining their plan of attack. An asterisk to this is that when Dante tells a commander to stay away it's in the IG's best interest to do exactly as he's told, cause there will definitely be some marines clad in black in that area.

The Raptors are so pragmatic, I'd be shocked if they didn't modify their armor to be more flexible and agile, as well as having NV Goggles in case their lenses in their helmets break.

those are the best. i remember when 2nd edition hit - grey knights were like this. only two models out afaik and the little sentences that those guys are the only ones capable of stopping demons in close combat. while massive demon incursions take their last reserves. my head cannon exploded in awe... ...until matt ward...

It is also really ironic when the codex astartes has a section of approved camouflage patterns for the astartes to use. Also the raptors chapter are probably swimming with vanguard marines/reivers now that Big G has given them primaris tech and reinforcements.

I like to imagine they make extensive use of those Vanguard Eliminators considering they perfectly match their doctrines and fighting styles. Pete The Wargamer even made Raptors conversion of them for the previous edition of Kill Team a year ago on his channel which I highly recommend if you're a Raptors fan.

True. He got 2 awesome successor chapters just from this video alone. While we are it, the Alpha legion too and Alpharius/Omegon. While the vanilla charge into melee are the most popular, the stealthy, acting in the shadows legions take the top spot for me. The Lion is the only exception of course.

It's hinted there's some warp shenanigans going on. Blood sacrifices are one of the 3 ways you can empower a daemon. The Blood Drinkers had a similar opportunity to be freed from the Red Thirst and Black Rage. It came from Kairos Fatewever. They use it but have to deal with a constant curse that could destroy the chapter in the long run.

Fun facts about the Angels Vermillion: 1: Their little ritual also involves… murdering and drinking one of their own sanuginary priests. 2: When the Blood Angels paid them a visit, the sight of it was enough to make the ambassador hit the ceiling, and he had to be blackmailed into silence. 3: One of their warships once belonged to the Night Lords. 4: Three companies revolted against their orders to stay out of Baal. They were the last reinforcements to reach the planet before the Tyranids hit. Their number out of the original 300? Less than 120. 5: Of that 120, maybe one (a captain named Fen) survived Baal. We’re not too sure.

Small point of correction. The Raptor's used to be your very typical bright and bold space marine chapter. But because of their strong sense of duty and because they have been smacked down so many times they now know all that matters is getting the job done, not the glory and recognition from doing so in style. Since the Raptor's have gone all stealthy they have been very successful.

The most unique still are the Mentors , old lore but not retconed. The guys are so unique with their incognito solo missions to help imperial regiments and infiltration that I really start think about them like loyalist Alpha Legion or remmnants of one of lost legions

The *Valedictors* are a fascinating chapter because in first edition, they were the 11th legion. The fact they are 1) Still around in the current lore 2) A First Founding chapter whose Imperium record was edited to say they weren’t First Founding and 3) Really secretive about which Legion they came from It all really makes one wonder… is this single chapter all that remains of the loyalist troops from the 11th?

Rainbow Warriors used to be a legion too before both were downgraded to second founding (or later) in one of their many retcons. GW wanted to imitate Rome’s lost legions

Even if they were lumped into the Ultramarines during the Crusade and Heresy, it would make sense to split them off when the Codex Astartes was put into effect. Depending on how many losses the remnants of the second and the eleventh took prior to the legions being broken up and whether or not their Geneseed was used during that time on new recruits, it is logical to think that several of the chapters with unknown histories stem originally from the two lost legions. Especially considering the official lore suggests they were folded into the Fists and Ultramarines and those two were the prime source of successors since the second founding.

I always loved the Raptors chapter ever since I read about them as a playable Chapter in the SPacemarine Tabletop RPG where you play as spacemarines in the deathwatch. It was seriously quite an interesting chapter, especially cuz they have less of the corax-curse, visually speaking. just very pale, blackhaired, etc. Rather than full on alabaster skin, ravenblack hair and creepy eyes.

FYI: raptors were created as a dedication to a fallen English soldier - a friend(or maybe family not sure) of some one at GW, hence the lore. Also: re camo, A lot of chapters colours are actually camo for their home world. EG blood angels home world baal is a red desert world - and the blood angels used to be a bit more orange/teracotta and less blood red - this is a new lore vs old lore thing.

I really wished the cursed founding chapters were talked about more. Their lore is always extremely interesting. Theirs only really 2 with novels about chapters from that founding as the main characters. Specifically the black dragons and blood gorgons. Shame the blood gorgons are probably never going to see the light of day again though.

Emperor's Children geneseed was weird. About 70% of it was damned near perfect. The remaining 30% would give you super space-cancer and then melt you. Which is the Geneseed Bile got. Bile never did succeed at actually curing it, but he was able to make it so that the tumor-then-melt disorder could no longer appear in new marines, rendering the geneseed damned near perfect. He himself, however, had to do mind+soul transfer and cloning because his body would inevitably turn into lumpy diarrhea.

This also reminds me of the other really weird seed. Thousand Sons. So much psyker that the guys who later became Rubrics all had minor psyker powers. But that wasn't psychic enough to save them from the Rubric of Ahriman.

I think there is a story involving a perpetual who talks about Verdun.\ "They sleep the next night in a wood, in the rain. They make a shelter using canvas rolls they brought from the trailer, and eat some ration packs. Artillery thumps and drums in the distance. There is a war going on over the hill. Oll knows he is being played with. It is a pine wood, a familiar scent. He is not sure, but he is pretty convinced he knows this place too. Is this benevolent guidance, or someone leading him into a trap? Most likely the same person, either way. Damn you, John. Oll gets up early, and leaves them sleeping. If he remembers it right, there is the end of an old communication trench not three hundred paces from the line of the wood. He can smell the river, which means that Verdun is to the west. The trench is right where he remembered it, right where he and the other men dug it. It is abandoned, slightly overgrown. A shift in shelling caused a tactical displacement, and this part of the line got emptied out. Small blue weed-flowers nod. Grass sprouts between tumbled sandbags. Bulwark armour-plates are rusting. The trench floor decking is sodden and unmaintained. He can smell coffee grounds and nettles, and latrines. The bright brass of spent shell cases litters the ditch and the sandbag line. Oll follows the jink in the zigzag trench under a low cover-top. He walks slowly, warily, carrying a rifle that will not be made for almost another thirty thousand years. There is the down-step into the officer’s dugout. He remembers it all, as if it was yesterday. In the dugout, there is a small desk made from a fruit box: a coffee pot, a stove, a dirty enamel mug. There is a dark stain on the back wall. Someone left in a hurry, someone who was hurt. On the desk, there is a log book. He opens it. It is a repurposed civilian diary, locally manufactured. Much love for the Death Spectres! Kinda annoyed that the Mantis Warriors don't get more love. And you didn't even mention the Relictors! I miss back when the Space Marine codex had a 'build your own chapter' appendix so you could point buy merits and flaws and make your homebrew chapters unique. Late 3rd/early 4th editions, every army had that level of customizability. Even Eldar, and you KNOW how much GW HATES giving Eldar anything at all. I made my own chapter back then, but subsequent editions turned the NoFun up to maximum and I haven't played in almost 20 years.
