I've only been following you (and Dave, for that matter) for a few months, and this is the first time I've been able to focus on your right hand technique...must have been the camera angle today...but I must say that you have the most amazing right hand I've ever seen, with a very refined and efficient motion that is a pleasure to watch on it's own, and which also, for me at least, adds a deeper layer of appreciation for the music you make with it...

I've noticed (and commented on) exactly that before and it is absolutely wonderful to see. Even when comparing the P-basses they are all treated as individuals. It is also amazing that the choices are three really spartan traditional basses and two modern basses with knobs and switches everywhere. An open mind is rare these days. So thank you Cici once again.

Really interesting video and agree that basses definitely have an individual tonality and feel that can change not just when you would choose to use them, but even how you play....i.e. mellow notes that bloom vs dig in attack. Great to see the love for non-Fender P bases too - That Shecter sounds the Badger's bits!

Never thought I'd give a 6 string a go but I bought a SR306EB and even though the neck looks like a cricket bat it's still super comfy. Incidentally, I don't have a bass atm, hence checking out recommendations and the favourites of others. For the record, my last bass was a black Yamaha BB400s fretless from the '80s. Absolutely loved how it sounded - but it was too good for me, so I sold it prior to moving to the US. I rather regret it now since I haven't found a replacement yet! Keep making these great vids and happy weekend :)

My oh my are there some lovely basses there? I’m amazed how good the Vintage (brand) one sounded, like you said it’s very warm but has an edge! The Sire basses are unreal for what they cost, for that matter so are their guitars! I sort of wonder about the weight, I know that you’re quite petite so weight is bound to be a consideration, does that have any connection with there being no Fender basses in your list? I found Fender and Squier basses very heavy except the Mustang and Jaguar which are short scale anyway.

As a few other people have posted their favourite guitars, I guess I'll do mine too. I was never an Ibanez guy, I was convinced they only put out low quality stuff (as I believe they had QC issues years back). When I was looking to get my first 5 string, the SR series was at the top of the list for a neck width to be similar to a jazz bass (as that is the only bass I had played for the first 7 years). I demo'd a couple of them (SR505) before I bought one and they are all very much the same...consistent. Even the entry level Talman basses are incredible!

The East Coast MB4 is a great bass (£179), the neck is a little bit wider than I would prefer, but I am absolutely tiny (4’11), so that may not be an issue for you at all (it barely is for me)! Also a great all rounder with a perfect beginner neck is the Ibanez Soundgear SR300, they’re slightly above budget (£269), but I started on one of those and I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect bass to start on.
