Redd was yet another guy who absorbed everything like a sponge and eventually developed his own signature sound and style. He was also a guy that was in the right place at the right time. Again, lots of good tone tips and stories. I'll bet life on the road with the one and only Merle Haggard was a real trip. Redd has been a part of some very timeless music. Thank you again Zac for a gem of an interview.

I saw Redd perform along with Bill Kirchen a month ago on Saint Patrick’s day and it was one of the most fantastic shows I’ve ever seen! Got to chat with both of them for a second and they couldn’t of been kinder and more sincere. Their playing is very inspiring, and the comical banter between the two was hilarious.

I had the great opportunity to play bass with Redd at a benefit for a dear friend in Caldwell, Texas. Right before he moved to Virginia. By the way you can catch him on you tube, Floyd's Country Store. He's a pretty good singer too. Redd on guitar and vocals with a bass and drums. Excellent show.. well was wondering who this old lead guitar player was and then I looked at a guy walking through the parking lot and gasped, it was Redd Volkeart. My heart almost beat out of my chest. I've been a big fan of his for quite some time. I walked right up to him and introduced myself babbling like a kindergarten kid. He was married to a classmate of mine so I sat with them outside at a picnic table and had a great conversation. It was like sitting with an old friend. I was up playing with some guys just jamming away and I saw him heading too the stage. I wasn't about to handover that bass. You could tell the ones who thought they could take it from me. They had a big ole footprint on there chest. Not to many musicians can say they played with a Grammy winner at my level of skills. I rode that cloud for quite awhile. Wonderful man and Tele picker. And the sweetest wife.

Not only a great player but so much humor comes out in his playing which you don't see much these days. I've lived and played in and around Austin since '87 and I can tell you that Redd very quickly became an institution upon arrival. Back in 2010 I was fortunate enough to have Redd sit in all night with my band at The 290 West Club for the annual Christmas Party of The Austin Steel Guitar Cooperative. Envision this: 2 dozen Pedal Steels around the dance floor, and on stage an Archtop Player, a Drummer and myself on Bass with Redd who traded solos 'round robin with the steel guitars all evening long. I was there and it seems surreal. Incidentally, he's genuinely a really nice guy. I said it that night and I'll say it again; he's like Danny Gatton with his foot deep in Bob Wills ass.

Hey Zak..great interview. I was fortunate enough to discover Red in a honky tonk on lower Broadway, Nashville after a radio remote I was working with Tracy Lawrence as his publicist. I was blown away by this nobody who was killing it with this telecaster. Nashville honky tonks in those days were full of hidden gems. I sat with him for the rest of the night and offered to pitch a Guitar Player magazine interview. I took a few lessons from him..he taught me cascading runs. At that time he said he dreamed of playing with Merle. He is definitely on my list of Tele-slingers along with Danny, Roy, and Brent. Fyi, Doug Livingston is mentioned..Doug played with my brother-in-law in Dan Fogelberg's band and his group Foolsgold...he is a true steel guitar genius. The only person I know who plays jazz on steel guitar. Truly amazing.

Thanks so much for this! You know, I just don't understand KZbin many times. Your channel is the very definition of the content, combined with your talent and personality, that should have put your channel at the top of suggested videos for me. Not just my love for Redd, but your other content too. You really do an excellent, excellent, job on every video I've watched. Redd! Absolutely amazing, stunning, flawless, oh hell, I could keep going, player. Effortless. And then we had your incredible wit. Had the room laughing between EVERY single break, and equally love your perfect blend straight into the next tune, and the next, etc. A pro's pro. I've learned a lot about comping during someone else's solo. Having watched more, I absolutely now see how/why Redd's early training to, using my own dumb words, 'keep the audience engaged' in the amazing skill of weaving one song into the next, and when there are breaks, we're STILL completely entertained and looking forward to your stories and comedy in-between sets of songs. THAT became part of show! I can immediately see the influence of the 'audience chat' on many other local acts. Sure, everyone knows to avoid the dreaded 'radio silence' when they're tuning, etc., but you set the bar so high, and others learned to adapt - and get better! I have a pic with you that I treasure and am giving it a special place on the wall of my home studio, right beneath your Continental Club - HEYBALE! SMOKIN' *every Sunday" framed poster. 🎸😁 Man, oh man, a huge mass of us in and around Austin, heck people would come from all over Texas to see Redd. I loved taking folks who hadn't yet seen you, to see you and watch their jaws drop. Saturday afternoons were a favorite of my wife and me. We miss Redd dearly, but he's in a better place in his small town in the mountains. How lucky that town is to have you. Austin has become a mess in so many ways. It's sad. We ALL (old Austinites) miss old Austin. Redd - We love you! Glad you and your wife made such a smart move (though we still can't wait for you to come for a visit and some gigs!). Hoping y'all are happy and healthy.
