The Shinkansen really really saved the passenger rail travel apart from the subway metros. And as youve said, it can outrun a car and match the total travel time with planes in the 4hr time. That 4hrs time killed regional air travel whenever an HST line runs parallel to it. No airliner dares to challenge an HST under 4hrs travel. It cemented the HST to the modern times as a quick and convenient way to travel. It is still subpar above 4hrs travel time as the plane can now cover its time lost in the airport maze.

It's worth mentioning the other similar classes built by Nohab for the railways of Norway (Di3) and Hungary (M61), and those built by the Belgian company AFB (Anglo Franco belge for the railways of Belgium (classes 52, 53 and 54) and Luxembourg (Class 1600) All of these were built to the same design but with differences in manufacturer of electrical gear, top speed, placement of lights, bogie design and many other small details. They were all powered by the non turbocharged EMD 16-567C or D engines, power output between 1600 and 1750hp. I have fond memories of those running in Belgium as late as 2002, often double or even tripple heading, with their loud exhausts they could be heard 30 minutes in advance on a cold winter night when tackling a steep incline with a heavy train.

Neat stuff. As a Dane I'm really glad to see a Danish locomotive on here. The MY class (or Nohab AA16 as Nohab called it) was basically a straight adaptation of the EMD F7 for the European market. And though they left service on the state railways, there are still various in service to this day! Notably with Viking Rail and Contec Rail, both of whom run regular freight trains across Denmark. Alongside this there are also several owned by smaller Branch lines managed by the Regional Authorities. Theirs are mostly used for stuff like maintenance works, driver training, snow clearing, moving rolling stock to workshops or between lines, and for the occassional freight trains. My own local station has an MX (Nohab AA12) stationed there. On top of this several MY's and MX's are also still in service in Sweden as well as Germany amongst several freight operators. Though a few of these are also in preservation, including an MY locomotive at a local heritage society that specialises in 1970's era intercity trains. They use an MY with a special artist livery from the 80's, giving it the nickname "The Graffiti" and it was used for an ATCS trial by DSB in the late 80's and early 90's to experiment with self driving trains. The locomotive is MY 1126 and its sister engine for the trial, MX 1021 is also still in operation with a Swedish operator, still in the same livery. On top of that this little European F7 was also sold to more places. The Danish State Railways may have been the launch customer but versions were also sold to Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg, and pre-communist Hungary.

Speaking of the 44 class NSWGR diesels, it reminds me of when the Flying Scotsman visited Australia. I was living in Acacia Ridge at the time and on my day off I took my wife and young son down to the Beaudesert Road level crossing to see the train on the Interstate rail line. Just before the visiting locomotive came through a 44 class diesel pulled a NSW train through. The diesel's number was 4472. So I got to see two 4472's pulling trains into Brisbane that day.

Yeah, the Swedish ones are called that since its Swedish practise to put a T in front of the designation for diesel locomotives. But we also still have a lot of MY's and especially MX's in service in Denmark for freight by operators like Viking Rail, Contec Rail, and various smaller operators having a few of their own for driver training, rolling stock moves, maintenance works, snow plowing, and occassionally freight trains. A few MY's now even operate freight services in Germany.

@@matsv201 You mean having multiple engines inside each unit, or the ability to operate several locomotives from one unit? Because afaik all the MY's including the Swedish ones still feature their original engines. And most of the Danish ones, and iirc all still in use have the ability to run in multiple. The demand is definitely still here. Heck Viking Rail (formerly CFL Cargo Denmark) even imported some locomotives from Luxembourg which have the same EMD prime movers as the MY's and were built in Belgium as a design based upon the MY's.

6:00 it should be added that Hungary also received 20 "NOHAB"s (that is what they are commonly referred to). Which is especially notable as this was the first engine from the West delivered to an Eastern Bloc country. Several of the Danish NOHABs are still in duty around Central Europe, mainly for maintenance train work, but also private freight companies. Hungarian MÁV has preserved quite a lot of NOHABs which regularly haul charter trains, e.g.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqPZgJedoNqnjc0 9:05 one Shinkansen 0 series leading vehicle can also be seen in England, at the National Rail Museum in York.

The 0 Series Shinkansen *WAS* revolutionary because nobody thought they could make an electrical multiple unit (EMU) train go that fast. Once the full-speed service between Tokyo and Osaka started in March 1965, the ability to travel between those two cities in 3 hours 10 minutes one-way revolutionized travel in that country.

Speaking of NOHAB, you can also include the MÁV M61 class, since they were basically the same locomotive, and basically have a cult status over here. Drivers and railway staff loved them, passengers adored them (which was also helped by the fact that they frequently pulled the summertime trains to the beach resorts on lake Balaton's southern shores (well, before the line was electrified), and their presence in communist Hungary, as imports from (nominally) neutral (but still capitalist) Sweden made the Soviets *so mad* that they've literally designed and built the M62 class of diesels, specifically for the Hungarian State Railways... But then, it turned out, that in their effort to one-up the Swedes and make sure that there would be NO NEED for capitalist imports, they actually managed to build the M62s so _well_ that they could export it to all over the socialist bloc, from East Germany to North Korea, and even use it on the Soviet railways as well (after re-gauging, of course). So, NOHAB not only built an excellent locomotive, but their existence also led to the creation of another very good locomotive class. I guess you could have have the M61s and the M62s in the next list as weird twofer, since they're completely different locomotive classes, but still linked together this way. Oh, and for the record: people also loved the M62s, but for a different reason than the M61s. While the M61 "Nohabs", as they were nicknamed, were liked for being smooth and reliable runners, the M62 "Sergeis" were liked for being robust and very powerful, being the most powerful diesels on Hungarian rails until the introduction of the domestically-built M63s. In essence, if the M61 was like a beloved sports car, the M62 was like a *tank* - people would stop and stare if either drove by. Though the M62s definitely sounded like tanks, too.

For your next Best Trains Ever list I got another one that is usually flying under the radar: the narrow gauge locomotive type IV K (the 4-K) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxon_IV_K The first ones where built in 1892 and the last ones where officially retired in 1994 which makes the class itself being in service for an outstanding 102 years! Many of them are still in service on narrow gauge heritage lines all over Germany and back when they entered service they REVOLUTIONISED narrow gauge train services as they were incredibly powerful for their size but due to being articulated they were incredibly maneuverable for the often curvy lines they were used at. And to be honest.. they are some of the CUTEST locomotives you have EVER seen...

Pardon me for being unrelated, but I would like Darkness himself to know that Alfred Perlman doesn’t exist in my fictional universe (allowing more NYC steamers to survive including two Hudsons and four Niagaras) and for him to do a video of that psychopath reacting to this very comment if you know what I mean.

Well, I did enjoy those rampage moments with Perlman and I thought it would be fun to let Darkness know that he doesn’t exist in my fictional universe, so that he could probably make a video where that maniac of a railroad president reacts to that comment before being erased from existence.

The Victorian Railways B class diesel of 1952 definitely enabled NOHAB to develop the MY types easily. Less known and less recorded is how the L&Y class 5 at 6:06 may have been influenced by the L&Y having a long working relationship with Kitson of Leeds. In the years before the class 5 Kitson had produced the Victorian Railways E class 2-4-2 tank engine and this Kitson series of standardised designs for the Victorian Railways was extensively covered in the engineering journals of the time. A VR E class on Royal Train duties in 1901 was one of the earliest filmed scenes in Victoria: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIHQc2R9lt6AoKc They were used on the intensive Melbourne suburban services as seen at Richmond in 1910 : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWbde3mGd6uar9U They rapidly became surplus after the 1919 electrification so they were converted to 0-6-2T shunting engines as part of the plan to match the earlier purpose built EE shunters. Film of an EE conversion near the end of normal service in 1968 around the 12:45 mark of this film : kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2PFlGuEadh_bNE The L&Y had near identical Kitson built 0-6-2 tank engines scrapped by 1930.

I've seen L&Y R 1008 many times and paid it little attention, unfortunately. This is down to not being a fan of tank engines. Next time I'll give it more time.

(@6:53) - It looks like a small lion is sticking its head out the cab window. Now while I’ve seen lions, eagles, griffons, and other creatures depicted on heraldry, I’ve never seen a lion try to operate a steam locomotive! Must be some new, British fad. 🤣😆

I think you should cover the Great Northern Railway(of Ireland) V class 4-4-0 compounds. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNRI_Class_V Having seen the preserved one, no.85 , I feel like they’re really something special. Now I may be a bit biased since it is the only working steam loco I’ve ever seen but eh who cares.
