In case you're looking at adding more German locomotives to these lists, here's a few that could classify: The class 101, which filled the role the class 120 was intended for. They're currently approaching retirement due to the loco-hauled Intercitys being phased out, but in their roughly 25 years of service they've been incredibly reliable and run truly ridiculous distances. They're basically a refined ICE power car as a locomotive. The class 218 diesel, first built in the 60s, still in service. They're extremely versatile, reliable, easy to maintain, and due to their hydraulic drive surprisingly powerful. The Class 220 (V200), the design the British 'Warship' was based on. For being the first post-war diesel design it had no reason to be as good as it was (especially when compared to the British efforts of the time), looked gorgeous and was in service for a long time. Some examples are in service with private operators, most of ehich were exported to Greece in the 80s, and returned about 15 years ago. The class 52 steam locomotive, a wartime development of the class 50. They were extremely simple to build and maintain, reliable, powerful, and some are still in service in the Balkans. And probably the most deserving to be on one of these lists, the german "Einheitslokomotiven" ( Standardised locomotives), comprising the classes E10, E40 and E50, and to some extent also the later derived classes 111 and 151. They were the first new post-war electric locomotives designed in an attempt to modernise the railways, and a massive success. Across the classes thousands were built and up until the advent of AC electric locomotives found pulling almost every train. Outside of being replaced on intercity services by the class 103 beginning in the 70s, they were ubiquitous up until the late 90s, and most weren't retired until the late 2000s. Even though DB has stopped using these locomotives in regular service about 5-10 years ago, many are still in daily service with private operators. This is especially impressive when you once again compare them to their British counterparts. Here we have one common design that served reliably for, in many cases, 60 years, and can still be seen fairly regularly.

i'd like to add the V60 (west) and V100 (east). the first one due to it's sheer longevity (they are around since the mid 50's with still no end in sight) and the second one due to it's sheer number of variants and rebuilts (there's even a hybrid variant)

I actually suggested the GWR 5700 in the comments for another video, so I'm VERY pleased to see them here. They may not have been huge, impressive express or heavy goods engines, but for simply being so prolific, doing way more than they were intended and having a long working life, they objectively earned their spot on the list.

ahhhhhh, the C62, they were actually prone to boiler fractures due to the fact some of them used boilers from class D52 locomotives, which WERE good boilers but these were war era steam boilers... so low quality steel were used. but except this fact they were really good locomotives. as a Japanese railfan, i have 2 C62 models.

The GWR 5700s bought by London Transport were used on their maintenance trains, which ran at night when the electricity was turned off. When they were finally scrapped/disposed of, LT switched to battery locomotives, which the maintenance crews apparently hated, because the train had to take 2 journeys, one with the maintenance crew, and a second with the maintenance materials and tools, so less could be done in the time that the power was turned off.

Great to see the the DB class 120 on this list. The DB class 120 and SBB Re460 locomotives are the basis of India's fastest passenger locomotive class, WAP-5 locomotives and India's most successful freight locomotive class, the WAG-9 locomotives. IR's most numerous passenger locomotive class, the WAP-7 locomotives are derived from the WAG-9. No wonder, DB class 120 and SBB Re460 (lok2000) are amongst my favorite locomotives.

Thank you for this one. I do enjoy all of your videos covering railway "stuff", but this one is kinda special to me because of the DB class 120 - not only a pioneer tech-wise, but also one of my favorite machines ever constructed. Especially the fact that it was the foundation for all kinds of designs later on, makes it a special one. The Eritrean bit was crazy too! Don't get me wrong, I knew about Eritrea before, but I didn't know that they actually run their railway based on steam locos from 38', amazing!

A good idea for a new series would be locomotives with a colorful history. One example is an E8 built as Chicago and North Western 5022A. It was later renumbered 519 and was put in Chicago commuter service. 519 was sold to Pacific Rail Dismantlers in the Los Angeles area, but Metrolink leased it to show off their new passenger cars, as the new locomotives hadn't arrived yet. She was later sold to Monad Railway Equipment and renumbered 97, and was used in the movie Torque in 2004. 97 was sold once again to a private owner and moved to storage at the Arizona Railway Museum, where she still stands to this day. But her future is uncertain. 97 was acquired by Iowa Pacific Holdings in the 2000's, and IPH is in the process of liquidation following bankruptcy.

If you haven't yet made a report on New Zealand locomotives, here's the tip. Head and shoulders above any Loco we've had, before or since, is the DX, originally 2750hp build by GE & based on U25 design. NZR got their first DX way back in 1972, and the vast majority of the 47 built for NZR are still in service, most uprated to 3300hp. NZ Government fish heads have since tried Chinese electric locos on North Island main trunk routes & they're just not up to the task unlike our 50 year old DX locos which said fish heads have since found out the hard way, with our taxpayers bucks!
