You should do a 5 steam locomotives that were built in the 21st century (excluding those that are still under construction, like PRR 5550). The Replica of the Leviathan, the Replica of GWR’s Firefly, Northern Central 17 York, and LNER 60163 Tornado
@sirrliv Жыл бұрын
Good idea, though with a couple addendums: 1. Might be personal preference, but I'd combine the Leviathan and York into one entry since they were both built by Kloke Locomotive Works to almost identical designs; both based on the same 1860's plans, but the York was given some minor modifications such as slightly smaller driving wheels. But in essence they're sister locomotives. 2. I'm iffy on including the GWR Firefly as it's on static display, and seemingly has been for quite some time. I don't know all the details, but apparently it didn't work very well, and when it's boiler ticket ran out, the boys at Didcot didn't show much interest in overhauling her, or at least knocked her to the back of their lengthy to-do list. On the good side though, there's several other candidates for 21st Century steam, such as Corris Railway No.7 of 2005, and more recently her little half-sister No. 10, which has had its first public steam trials in early 2023 and is currently nearing completion, hoping to be in service by the end of the year, giving the Corris Railway replicas of both its original steam engines, which were later sold to the Talyllyn Railway (and turning Sir Handle and Peter Sam from twins to triplets).

AAAHHHH!!! Thank you for covering 1201 and 1202 from my request! Having previously worked on the D&S, the other employees there told me SO much about those two because they were just awful. Both have their trucks now, but only 1201 has a fuel tank, and said fuel tank doesn’t even fit on the rails. They are embarrassing and I’d be genuinely shocked if they ever ran.

okok. as the one who as made several comments about mentioning only bad locomotives when it comes to italy, i concede that maybe i was a bit harsh on you, but being reminded about how bad some of our trains were when we already commute on substandard, badly mantained, old trains it just hurts (except the new hitachi). ANYWAY, i really do suggest you take a look at some of our greatest trains because there really are some gems: the E.428 were a result of mussolini wanting to make italy independent and better and all that bs dictators do, and was actually pretty good and innovative for the time (and electric!). the first series was actually overpowered and damaging to the rails, but after that was remedied they performed really well and for many decades they were considered the queens of speed and power. so i highly encourage checking them out, especially because there is one of them that is nicknamed "pirata" (pirate) because of its story. another train you should check out is the etr.300 "Settebello", a high speed electric luxury train. doesn't that peak your interest?

You can do one on the worst Dutch locomotive ever built, the class 2600 "Beel". A small class of main line diesel locomotives with, again, an engine meant for marine use which developed leaky bits everywhere, the drivers had to run for buckets of water at every station to keep them filled up with enough water to not seize.

As Indonesian, i'll pick you better. The one on East Indie. Class 1000 or C53 (Indonesian Railway redesignation) They intended to make steamer capable to go 120 km/h on winding track of Java Island, by themself. But instead it's run so poorly, the had to permanently double head it to reach intended speed. And it didn't help with how much it shake due to poorly design four-piston configuration. It's anemic, ride like hell, and maintenance nightmare Adding insult to injury, Henschel is RIGHT THERE. And they made same size locomotive, 10% more powerful. With only 2 piston.

The doors were then raised and locked into position with the cars hanging, nose down, for the entirety of the trip. The automobiles were terrible and were discontinued fairly quickly rendering the rail cars useless.

Fair dues to the Monster, its designer, Ross Winans, is probably the closest thing the steam world has gotten to a mad scientist. Pretty much all of his designs were kind of insane, even the ones that worked. He was responsible for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's popular "Camel" locomotives, which placed the driver's cab on top of the boiler, as well as the similar "Crab" and "Muddigger" types, essentially Camels with the drive delivered by gears rather than direct rods. He wasn't limited to locomotives either; look up his Cigar Steamers, literally steamships built in the shape of cigars. Some had a propeller on each one, but one design had a giant turbine blade in the center! I cannot confirm, but when the first reported UFO citings in the US appeared in 1896 with the "Mystery Airships", I can only presume that at least some people just shrugged and thought "Ross Winans is at it again." (despite him dying in 1877. But again, mad scientist; how can you be sure he's really gone?)

(Not sure if it is 100% correct). The IC4 Desiro was actually soppose to replace the Litra ME. But The IC4 Was on one of your worst trains ever videos. As it was really bad. And if i remember correctly that actually made the ME stay in service for 40 years. Until it was finally retired in 2021. 4 where scrapped, 1 got sendt to a museum, and the remaning bunch got exported. But some of us has asked the same thing about DSB. You have something that works. So why not keep using it.
@willsen8908 Жыл бұрын
There is another pair of locomotives in Denmark numbered 1201 and 1202 that were not that great. The two DSB Class MY (1201 and 1202) were built in 1957 and 1960 by danish manufacturer Frichs with the prime mover delivered by Burmeister & Wain which was used in ships ( this might have been the cause of there problems as they should have been smalled and lighter), to compete with the Swedish/American MY. These locos were not only unstable but also very unreliable, i believe that the main probles were with the transmission or something like that. They would both be scrapped in 1971 in Odense

When I heard who was responsible for D&S 1201/2, I thought 'that name sounds familiar'. Over 5 years before the D&S evidently didn't do their due diligence on potential suppliers, the same lot lumbered the Isle of Man Railway (3ft gauge) with a very heavy and expensive means of stopping a few feet of track blowing away. Colloquially known as 'The Cabbage', IMR No.21 (2013) has suffered from an almost unbelievable litany of different woes, including flashovers and overheating and currently sits, useles, on loose tyres in a shed. I don't think the thing has managed more than a couple of weeks in traffic in total over it's 10 years on the island. Not sure if it's even been started up in the past 4 years. The IMR is a nationalised line on this proudly independent islandnand this whole mess was what happens when some political committee with next to no knowledge of railways, indulges in public willy-waving. Had they listened to the people who know what they're doing, the Manx taxpayer would've spent less than this contraption has cost so far, they could've ..... Oh what's the point!! 😡

Dark, can I ask you something about your placement of cab-forward engines on Worst Trains? Why do you do it and not acknowledge that it has worked at least twice in history? Most of the examples of cab-forwards that I've seen, because I haven't seen every video in this series and acknowledge early that you might have brought this up at some point, are one-offs or experiments trying to improve something that was already there. They weren't done out of necessity, forcing people to work on and improve the technology so it would be a reliable design. Train of Thought made a video regarding at least two instances in American railroading history where cab-forward engines were actual successes because they were REQUIRED in order for the railways that used them to function. I can link the video if you wish.

In my country Indonesia, there was 1000 Series Class Pasific locomotives for working express train in dutch east indie (now Indonesia). Because at that time ini 1920, 20 of this particular Class were built by the Dutch. This locomotives had 4 cylinders compound to make them ideal for high speed. However, the Weekspoor factory is just never built that kind of locos. And yeah, they were not suited for working flagship express they intended for. When pulling express train that linking the capital city Batavia (now Jakarta) with Surabaya that has operating speed up to 120kph. This locomotives just bouncing heavelly when travel above 90 kph, meanwhile the older Pasific locomotives ,the 700 Series built by the swedish were doing the job better, even becoming the world fastest steam locomotives to run on Narrow gauge track reacing speed of 127kmph in 1927. That said the Dutch built the 1000 Series only for they prestige. They wanted they flagship train to pull by they own made loco, even they never had the skills to do it
