Interesting video. But what i missed is, what Reissue you get. For Example Can - Tago Mago. I have the Reissue from 2019 Remastered on orange translucent Vinyl, pressed by Pallas. I didn't have an OG but this Reissue sounds absolute stunning. No surface noise, no crackles/pops and it sounds pretty well detailed and balanced. So i think we can't have the same Reissue. I love this comparisons, but don't forget to say which Reissue it is in detail, because most of the Records have several Reissues. Gruß Manfred👍❤

Wonderful video as always M45! I’ve been on a similar Krautrock Journey, it’s always been on my radar, but have taken a deep dive over the past 18 months. It’s currently my favorite Genre❤. Some comments: I have the 1st Tago Mago purchased from a groovy German KZbinr… it’s instantly become one of the top best sounding records in my collection, just perfect. Same guy sold me the ART, also sounds great (one 5 on the record, 2 5s on the jacket). Tangerine dream; I bought from a discogs seller in Louisiana who THOUGHT it was a 1976 repress, turned out it was the second press! Another seller mistake but this one worked FOR me;) Good to know the UFO and Kollectiv reissues are at least decent. The OGs have been on my wantlist a while and I NEVER see them in decent condition for less than the cost of a kidney!! Finally, love these comparisons for Krautrock “heavy hitters” it’s great to know alternatives to use as placeholders in the short term. Please keep these coming!

@@hurkamur1 oh yeah. I have an Italian Can “Soundtracks” on Spoon from 1981 and I’d be willing to put that up against an OG all day along with my Japanese 80’s “Tago Mago” . They sound absolutely phenomenal and are AAA. Many of those early Spoon reissues are great audiophile alternatives to OGs or modern dreck. I’ve noticed people in the VC really sleep or have a blind spot when it comes to early reissues. Especially Jazz too. Many of my best sounding Jazz LPs are 70’s represses.

I enjoy your channel. Will you ever post an actual video explaining why you changed your collecting approach from years of only "audiophile" (your first clips) to now so-called superior sounding "original" that human hearing supposedly can make a qualitative distinction from reissues? Where are the box set reviews?

THIS is such an important review process and SO appreciated! esp. highlighting the Krautrock genre which, I too, love. I had my fingers crossed for the CAN reissue and my heart sank when you passed judgement! Hoping to hear about the NEU boxset but perhaps you reviewed that elsewhere. As always the attention to the graphics and record jacket is appreciated. When derogating the jacket you state "You can live with it" ... no ... no I can't ... 🙂 One of your best programs so far my fine German friend! You promise more Krautrock reviews/comparisons ... Hope this is so and I will keep an eye peeled! (ouch!)

Andreas.

Just love seeing these beautiful albums, Michael. One day I would be interested to see a comparison between the American Can albums and the German. I can imagine that the German LP are going to be superior. But it would be interesting. I have a few Cluster WG originals and they are wonderful. But the first five Can albums did get an American issue. And I was able to grab nice copies that are ok. Btw. The was a Neu! in the US release the is horrible. Although the blue sleeve is cool. Be well. Danke. Shawn

@@stuartwray6175 Yea. The US copy has a great, unique blue sleeve but sadly wasn’t pressed well. It’s plagued with loud pops and cracks. I owned one briefly (although I had been warned about the quality of the vinyl) and can confirm that it was very noisy. You may choose to collect it anyway because of the cool sleeve.

Thanks but strange that you don’t list exactly which reissues you are comparing the originals to. For example the most recent Ash Ra Temple MG Art 50th Anniversary reissue (that got very good reviews) doesn’t have the original Ohr record label design. I could be wrong but according to Discogs the only recent re-release using the Ohr label on the record is a bootleg. So I suspect you might be comparing an OG to a bootleg copy !! Easy to clear this up if you would post the reissue year, company and matrix of the reissues. Also the recent orange vinyl Tago is known to be a better pressing than the black vinyl. For these comparisons to be useful and honest it’s probably necessary to read up on the best recent reissues rather than them being just randomly selected.

I think one of the problems is the master tapes are probably long gone from the original releases & are probably mastered from digital files. I do have the Tago Mago reissue which I bought 8 years ago & luckily my copy is quiet, maybe more recent pressings are poor? Anyway, another good video 👍
@JeffersonDD
@JeffersonDD 27 күн бұрын
Good point. FWIW; I know the Tago Mago tapes are out there and in decent shape. They must not have been used on the remaster (or a bad safety or digital source). For Neu! I think Rother has control of those and Rodelius maintains the K(c)luster Harmonia / etc archives. Manuel Gottshing approved most of the ART before he passed so a lot of these precious tapes are in good hands. Hopefully they actually get used in the future

I’m not a collector of records, I have bought them for 50 years and mainly buy new records. I often wonder why a first press is so important, subsequent represses ( not remasters) are usually made from the same parts and sound just as good and are usually considerably cheaper. Thank you as always for making such an interesting video, much appreciated.

I collect a lot of vintage represses. Especially from the 70’s and early 80’s when they’re all AAA and as you stated often even the same metal work. I love my 70’s UK HTM Beatles. They’re as audiophile as anything out there. I have Art Pepper, Cecil Taylor and Sonny Rollins represses on Contemporary from the 70’s that will absolutely knock your socks off and blow you away. Absolutely stunning sound and so much more affordable than an OG. Sometimes an OG is better. But sometimes it’s not. In my opinion the best bang for your buck is the in between. I’ve rarely gone wrong with an early repress. My Can represses from the 80s are no slouches and are NM and I paid less than $30 for each.

Hi! Great video, I just know Guru Guru and Can, so I have to stop to listen the others. Do you know Jane, I adore Daytime, the best debut album in many comparatives in my opinion, not only in Krautrock scenario. If you know and have the first issue, how you judge this version. I have one that has some constantly background noise, phase signal or technical issue, that I hope that is in my cheap version. Because in terms of musicality is a wonderful album.

Hi Michael, very entertaining video, many people are interested in which reissues are good and which are not so good. With the Tago Mago I have to say that my UA Liberty also sounds the best. I also have the normal UA without Liberty and two other reissues on Spoon. But hey, the reissues on Spoon aren't bad either. I don't know the reissue you showed. Great video, I'm looking forward to the next comparison.

Nice finds Michael, good for you! My most recent four finds are: Can 'Soon Over Babaluma' United Artist USA pressing NM Faust 'IV' Virgin UK 1st press VG+ Kraftwerk 'Doppelalbum' Philips German 1st press NM Neu 'Hallogallo' Rock on Brain Series, reissue on Brain/Metronome '80 or '81 German VG+ In your next edition I'd ask you to consider which re-issue your comparing too. The MUTE and Bureau B re-issues compare more favorably than anything on Digalog in my opinion. Further to the point that Tangerine Dream has seen multiple re-issues in the past half dozen years of varying degrees of quality - similar for Ash Ra (and Faust) of which there are many unofficial pressings. The current re-issue of that Ash Ra title on MG-ART being superior to most, IMO.

I have the two 5 version of Ash Ra. Sounds amazing. Wonder if they used the same plates? I also have the second German press of Tago Mago and again it sounds amazing. I also compared it to the reissue and my conclusion was that as you say the reissue lacks all magic! Kraut has always been hard to get and expensive. I want on a digging trip to Berlin and Hamburg 15 years ago looking for Kraut and sure the prices has gone up but it was hard finding anything back then too. As an investment imo you can pay what ever the cost is today for an original. It doesn’t matter the price. It will just go up. Collecting Kraut is safer than all bonds and stocks out there 😁

Most of my Tangerine Dream records are early pressings and the dynamic range stereo imaging are the best but I don't have the newer reissues to compare them to . My Can records are mostly reissues and I don't have the originals to make any comparisons to . Very informative video though . I have an early pressing of Can titled a French gig . It actually sounds somewhat flat and I think it has been played a lot by the previous owner plus it's a bootleg which may have affected the audio quality.

The only reissues for me of note are ERC & AP & perhaps a few others. These companies mission is to be authentic & compete and beat the originals. But the run of mill reissue companies are mostly disappointing not mentioning any names Abbey Road 1/2 speed oops 😬 Michael hope you’re well my friend take care ✊

Michael if you care about being honest with your community then I would kindly ask you not to delete this comment (as has already been done once). The Ash Ra Temple album you used for comparison in this video is a bootleg. It’s clearly identifiable on Discogs via inner rings on the label. Sort on Discogs for German pressings and it’s the last listed. Recent reissues don’t use the original Ohr label design. I’m not trying to be rude, mistakes like this are easily made but may I suggest (as others have) that you list the exact reissues you have used. Thanks.
