our coach in HS asked, what is a good batting avg in the MLB. we yelled out numbers over .300 and he made a great point after that. Said that 70% of the time that person got out. It just blew our minds as we never thought of that before. and this was 25 years ago too. LOL

I preach to the kids I coach that baseball is a game of failures but as long as we learn from them we can grow and get better from those failures.

I tell players that if they did the best they could at the time, that is all anyone can ask.
@SOKYBowhunter5 жыл бұрын
@@slundgr I've found that creates the "good enough" mentality and the kids dont push themselves to be better.
@slundgr5 жыл бұрын
@@SOKYBowhunter I think those are mutually exclusive. I challenge kids all the time by asking them, "How good do you want to be?' I also tell kids they should get a little better every day and always be improving, and you have to compete on every pitch and every play. It's a competition between the pitcher and hitter for instance, and you have to win that battle. I don't know how you can ask a player to do more than they best they could at the time.

..."understand that your baseball career goes by REALLY fast...practice like it, play like it". The hour glass is constantly running out of sand. No truer words have been spoken. Time eventually tells everyone that the game has passed them by...might happen after high school, might happen after college...but it WILL happen. Play like it!

A friend told my grandson many people say practice makes perfect , he said not true only perfect practice makes perfect .
@slundgr5 жыл бұрын
Your friend is exactly right. Quality over quantity. I tell the HS and youth players I work with that practice is like going to class. Drills I give them to work on between practices is their homework. Games are the exams to see how well they did on their homework and classwork. Get a little better every day. Baseball is a game where it has to be second nature, just like brushing one's teeth. The mental side of the game has to be practiced as much as the physical side.

Steven Lundgrin. Yes and those with no improvement show what they didn't do because they don't want it . I have a question foe you if you don't mind helping me . My grandson is now 16 and because all of the teams he was on as travel players were daddy ball . We were told they weren't but when we got there , oh Jo blow is his dad . So we were always in daddy ball and it just got worst till at 14 he never played select again . Last year he was in 10th and signed up for hs ,but those couches didn't know him but one told me hes a beast at 6.3 and 190 . How can I con him back to playing select again . As a 8u he hit the walk off for state winner . I have a team wanting him as pitcher . Any help would be appreciated .

@@travismccasland7627 That is a tough situation and one I've heard before. Where do you live? Are there baseball clinics or facilities that field teams in his area? He might look into fall baseball, just to get the feel of it again. Start throwing and swinging his bat on his own. Does he know his HS coaches? I would say he should approach them and tell them he is interested in getting back into the game. They may know teams he could play on that are not "daddy ball" or the high school might be having workouts. I think teams are always looking for good pitchers and really good players. Look around for fall baseball teams and ask who is coaching them, the goal of fall baseball, playing time philosophy, etc. Go talk to the coaches or directors in person. I hope that helps. Let me knowhow it goes if there are any other suggestions I might provide. Another suggestion is to talk to friends he might have who are playing on a team that they enjoy and talk to that coach. If he really wants to play, I bet he can find a team. One of the things I liked about high school level baseball is you didn't have all the "daddy ball" issues as a rule.

@@josecuellar1579 One has to practice the proper drills and techniques or bad habits are further ingrained and harder to break. That is why it's important to learn the right way the first time, and that is where good instruction can come into play.
