I am coming to the end of a year-long online drawing course and we have pretty much covered all your tips! I cannot believe how much my art has improved through learning these skills, but probably most of all, recognising the importance of values.

Thanks for tip no. 4 :) And I would add a bonus tip: draw lightly and make sure your pencil is sharp :D That was game changer for me.

"avoid lines" Looks down at his pen, shrugs his shoulders and keeps crosshatching with all the lines. Shade with lines. It's awesome......

I’m not opposed to using lines to shade. I made a whole video on crosshatching and why it’s awesome. But for someone who is just starting out, understanding classical shading first will greater your understanding of values and gradients, then u can use techniques like cross hatching and stipple shading to greater effect.

Just so people know voiding lines is only for a specific style. Lines and dots are often used for shading. I've seen artists use a technique were you shade without lines but then outline the shaded area or the highlights and it looks really good. Using lines to draw hair is perfectly fine too. Art tutorials are great but make sure watch different people. Many artists think their way is the best way and it can actually hamper your personal growth.

Yes ofc but for someone starting out learning basic shading first can make learn cross hatching or stipple shading easier in the long run because it helps you understand value changes better. I’ve done a video on crosshatching too

@Bijansabeti You probably should have clarified that. You make it sound like it's the one way to do things.
