Here's a fun fact. Fossils of an extinct american zebra (a.k.a the haggerman horse) from the Pleistocene was found in California. So in a way, the introduction of the common zebra was technically a reintroduction. CORRECTION: It was actually a type of true horse that lived in California, the american zebra lived in haggerman, idaho.

Most equid species evolved and were native to North America. The bering land bridge closed off, there was an extinction event within the species over here, but they still continued living in Asia, Europe, and Africa. I'm an advocate for mustangs, and educating people that they are indeed a native North American species is one of my main talking points. It's the ranchers overgrazing public lands that want them gone and spread around that they're invasive. As for the Zebras specifically, who's to say. The zebra species native to North America was a bit different, and there are a couple different kinds of living zebra today. The North American Mustang is pretty close to what was running around before they all died off. There are true wild zebras and burros, but the only true wild horses are the prezwalskis horse. They're really close to domestic horses in appearance, but only have primitive markings and colors, shorter backs,necks, and legs, sturdier feet, and sparse manes and tails. They spent a really long time bringing them back from the brink, released them, and the wandered right into chernobyl and seem to like it there;-;

Great to see the return of the Eurasian Beaver to the UK, but the best news is the reintroduction of the Pine Marten, as it's favourite prey is the American Grey Squirrel. Our native Red (being much lighter) can avoid the Pine Marten by going out onto the thinnest of branches, unlike the Grey which is much heavier.

Hold on, California has wild zebras? I never knew this! This is like a accidental rewinding project lol. But do any creatures hunt these guys? Like wolves?
@kingjiggle4th7892 жыл бұрын
As of now nothing seems to be hunting the zebras but that could mostly be due to a lack of large carnivores sharing their habitat since all of the megafaunal predators that historically called CA home like cougars, grizzlies, wolves, and jaguars could take zebras as all of them have been recorded predating on horses in various parts of their range.

One species I find to be invasive but I don't see anyone talk about in california is the Canadian geese, lot of local community ponds have populations of these birds over 200 that stay year round. They've pooped almost everywhere in these pond trials and it's really filthy, I went out to a community lake and the kids swimming area was covered in poop, I'm pretty sure they've just decimated the fish population in these ponds too. Even in a reservoirs I fish a few local fisherman tell me the water went from clear bluish color to this greenish color after a few year of these birds staying in the place

The Italian Ruin Lizards are all over northern Queens to the east and western Long Island NY. I lived there for 26years and saw them all the time. Got a few photos of them. Never able to capture one. The story is that a pet store in Hempstead, Long Island was closing and had just received a shipment of 60+ of these lizards and decided to just set them free out in the back. I am originally from New Jersey and I have seen fence swifts and skinks before. The first time I started seeing these I thought I was hallucinating. I love reptiles.
