Invasive plants definitely have some utility sometimes, kudzu has multiple applications (although is not as problematic as English ivy or Chinese privet in the US Southeast)
@thenerdbeast73753 жыл бұрын
If it doesn't cause issues it isn't considered invasive. So I guess you mean "non-endemic" species.
@mantisman2303 жыл бұрын
I believe they mean species that are invasive but have some good utility. Kind of like lionfish being a big problem but also tasting quite good as a food fish. Silver carp are being turned into pet food for another example.

Thank you for doing this video on Columbia. The bio diversity needs to be protected as it is such a beautiful place. As for the hippos, a lot of the locals like them and apparently the aggression scene and native African hippos has not extended to these invasive guests. The program to sterilize the hippos is ongoing but there are also calls to eliminate the hippos entirely to avoid more widespread issues

To give out location suggestions I’d go with Argentina, the temperate climate of the southern portion of that country has lead to a similar case to New Zealand where invasive ungulates like Wapiti are competing with native ones. Another suggestion would be the Hawaiian islands with invasive deer, boar, rats, and mongoose.

Yes, it was, even more so when Pablo Escobar died in 1993 and his private zoo was abandoned, the problem was that nobody did anything and the hippo population is growing 30 years later.
@patarroyo.6189 Жыл бұрын
There was a government program intended to hunt them professionally. But somebody took a photo of a dead hippo posing as a hunting trophy and then, there was a huge scandal in the media(coming from PETA style people). That was the end of that. Now the government wants to neuter them. But that is incredible expensive and difficult to achieve.

Well there's animal activists that don't want them killed they have brought tourists for local communities and most local people there don't have a gun big enough to drop a hippo.

Here’s some more scary discovery about hippos, and recent studies have showed that hippos do have a taste for meat, and hippos will be scavengers to carcasses nearby the river, and even walk up to a feeding and taking a bite from the crocodiles kill or even the crocodile itself, and hippos will even eat hoofed mammals that take a drink near their watering hole, and they long thought the hippos don’t have the gut bacteria to digest meat, and that why they attack the boats that have people on them. hippos feeding this way will help them get more protein ,than their usual plant diet which is low in protein and with that extra protein they can recover their population better ,and develop their embryos much faster. and this is why the birth of an elephant takes so long because their diet is low in protein and I will consider feeding elephants some eggs or termites to feed on while they are pregnant.

Some environmentalists believe that these hippos may have found themselves in a precious niche once occupied by semi-aquatic ungulates that roamed South America 100,000 years ago.
@Bunny-ns5ni2 жыл бұрын
This has been claimed several times in the past, but they are an ecological danger to their new environment. There's no evidence to suggest that the hippos aid the environment in any way. They may fill a similar niche, but not perfectly. That's the difference.

The hippos issue was also due to the fact that the US stepped in to "take care" of the Escobar situation, but once he was dead they all pulled out leaving the cleanup to the local military. They didn't have the resources or knowhow to safely move them, and killing them was out of the question because locals cared for them. So the hippos were able to escape once the zoo fell into disrepair and now they can't get the situation under control.
@GabrielaMendoza-bu2tk Жыл бұрын
I would honestly love to see like a cultural documentary about these Escobar hippos because I had no idea that the locals liked them so much. It reminds me of something going down in Florida where in certain parts have little invasive monkeys in the springs and the locals actually don't wanna get rid of them either
